Studies from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy indicate combining window upgrades with high-efficiency heating systems can cut heating demands considerably. Also, applying weatherstripping and caulking can prevent drafts, while ensuring adequate attic insulation will create a tight thermal barrier. Change the heat delivery Upgrading a heating system to a more efficient one can save homeowners money. According to research by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, replacing traditional fossil-fuel furnaces with electric heat pumps can drastically reduce energy expenditures. Modern heat pumps deliver more thermal energy than the electrical energy they consume. Homeowners have different options that may help them reduce their heating and energy bills.

s fall gives way to winter, air conditioners typically get turned off and heaters get turned on. Home heating costs can quickly add up for homeowners. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, heating a space is the single largest energy expense for American households, accounting for roughly 42 percent of total residential energy consumption. However, individuals can implement certain strategies to cut down on heating costs and optimize energy efficiency. Manage the thermostat Managing a home thermostat is a cost-effective and simple adjustment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, turning a thermostat back by 7° to 10° F from its normal setting for eight hours a day can save up to 10 percent a year on heating bills. Utilizing the automated scheduling capabilities on programmable or smart thermostats enables people to program a lower baseline temperature when out at work or school and while sleeping. Seal up the home Warm air from indoors can easily escape through unsealed gaps in a home. Similarly, cold air from outdoors can infiltrate through the same spots. This causes heating units to work overtime.

Tips to Winterize a Home as Cold Weather Approaches
I
t’s not uncommon to spend a lot of time out of the house when the weather outside is warm. The popularity of outdoor living spaces has made it easier than ever to enjoy nature without leaving home, which can generally be done from late spring to mid-fall each year in many regions. But as fall creeps toward winter and temperatures drop, it’s time to head back indoors. As millions prepare to go back inside with winter approaching, it can be beneficial to winterize a home so interior spaces are more comfortable and exterior spaces are better able to withstand potentially harsh winter weather. Check your carbon monoxide detectors. Fall is a great season to open the windows in many regions that feature prototypical autumn air. But the crisp air of fall will eventually give way to much colder air, at which time the windows will be closed and likely remain shut for months to come. The Minnesota Department of Health notes that carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that cannot be detected
Reversing ceiling fans in winter can help redirect warm air from the ceiling into living spaces below.
by the senses. When windows remain closed for long periods of time, such as in winter, the buildup of CO, which can come from sources like water heaters, gas stoves, fireplaces, and clothes dryers, can poison residents over time. CO detectors are a safety net against such a fate, but they must be operating at peak capacity in order to be effective. As fall winds down, check all CO detectors to make sure they’re working properly and replace any that are not. S ee WINTERIZE on P ag e 8

WINTERIZE
Check for drafts. Check around windows and doors throughout the home to see if there are any gaps that are allowing air from outside to enter the home. If daytime temperatures are mild well into the fall, then it can be difficult to see if there are any drafts before the sun goes down. Conduct this check in the evenings when temperatures are a little more chilly and leaks are easier to detect. If drafts are detected, apply weather stripping around doors and windows that do not require replacement. If there’s drafts around aging windows and doors, consider replacing them. Call a chimney sweeping service. Cozying up beside a fire can make anyone forget the cold weather outside. But fireplaces should be subjected to a thorough cleaning by a skilled professional before each winter. Animals might have nested in the chimney since the fireplace was last used, and you will want any nests cleared prior to lighting your first fire of the season. In addition, the tar-like substance creosote, which forms when wood is burned in a fireplace, can build up and harden over time. That’s a dangerous prospect, as creosote is highly flammable, which can lead to
chimney fires. Creosote also can block the flow of air through a chimney, and that can trap gasses, including CO, in a home. Reverse your fans. It’s a simple step but one people may not even realize they can make. In homes with ceiling fans, residents can reverse the fans so the blades spin clockwise. This simple step pushes trapped warm air hovering around the ceiling into the living space below. This can make home interiors warmer without requiring residents to turn up the thermostat and increase their energy bill. Replace your HVAC air filter. Replacing the air filter on your HVAC prior to winter can make the unit operate more efficiently, which can help reduce your wintertime energy bill. Replacing the filter prior to winter also improves indoor air quality, which is a notable benefit during a time of year when the windows typically remain closed for months. Winterizing a home is not a significant undertaking, but it can be very effective at making homes healthier and more comfortable once windows are closed for the season.

THINK SPRING
Potential Fireplace Problems
September 23, 2026 • Webb Weekly • 10
F
ireplaces are often a centerpiece of an interior living space. Homeowners often laud the ambiance a fireplace can provide, and the supplemental heat a fireplace can provide can be just what people need to stay warm on a cold day. The Northeast Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association says an estimated 57 percent of homeowners in the United States own some type of fireplace, freestanding stove or hearth product. However, fireplaces are not without their potential for problems. Issues that can affect a fireplace will depend on the type of system, as problems that affect wood-burning fireplaces will differ from those that can affect gas units. The following are
some potential issues homeowners can look out for when using their fireplaces. Smoke spillage: Fireplaces are supposed to vent up and out through a chimney or exhaust pipe. But if a damper is closed or blocked, if the chimney is dirty, or if there is negative air pressure in a tightly sealed home, smoke cannot escape and will enter the living space. Creosote formation: Creosote is a flammable, tar-like substance that is the result of burning wood. Creosote significantly increases the risk of a chimney fire. Creosote can build up in the flue over time if it is not remediated. Odors: A dirty chimney from creosote or moisture damage can result in a foul odor
emanating from the fireplace. This also may occur if a bird or rodent nests in the chimney. Ignition failure: Gas units may not always light properly. Doctor Flue says it could be the result of a malfunctioning pilot light or an improperly placed log set. In addition, if the pilot light goes out as soon as the button
is released, it may indicate a dirty or faulty thermocouple or thermopile, which are sensors that keep the gas valve open. Cracked masonry: Any cracks in the mortar, firebricks or chimney crown are major hazards. Cracks in such components increase the risk of a house fire and should be immediately addressed. Drafts: Cold air coming through the fireplace may indicate a damaged or missing damper. Carbon monoxide: Grill Parts Replacement says poorly vented fireplaces can lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide inside the home, which is a health hazard. Oftentimes homeowners should leave fireplace troubleshooting to a professional. Annual inspections of units can head off potential problems to ensure safer operation.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist: 8 Steps to Prepare Your Home for Cold Weather
A
s temperatures cool, now is an ideal time to prepare your home for winter. Taking care of seasonal maintenance before the cold weather arrives can help protect you and your wallet from unexpected and costly repairs. From clearing gutters to scheduling an HVAC tune-up, tackling a few projects now can help set your home up for a safe and comfortable winter. Consider this your ultimate fall home maintenance checklist from the experts at Carrier. 1. Clean Gutters Leaves and debris collect quickly in home gutters and downspouts. Make sure they are clear so water can drain properly and away from your home’s foundation. If you wait until after temperatures drop, you run the risk of ice dams and water damage. 2. Inspect Your Outdoor HVAC Equipment Remove leaves, grass clippings and debris that may have accumulated around your outdoor unit. Maintain-
ing proper clearance can help support airflow and system performance throughout the season. 3. Replace HVAC Filters A dirty filter can restrict airflow and force your system to work harder, potentially increasing energy use and reducing comfort. A simple filter check can also help prepare your heating system for increased use. Check your HVAC filter before turning on your heating system and continue inspecting it throughout the winter. To help maintain proper airflow, experts typically recommends replacing air filters every 1-3 months. 4. Test Smoke and Carbon MonoxS ee MAINTENANCE on P ag e 1 4

MAINTENANCE ide Detectors When changing clocks, test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries as needed. Working carbon monoxide alarms are especially important as temperatures fall and home heating systems begin running more frequently. 5. Schedule Your HVAC Tune-Up Before Winter Arrives Don’t wait until the first cold day of the season to find out your heating system isn’t ready for winter. Annual maintenance can help improve efficiency, extend equipment life and identify potential issues before the heating season begins. Experts often recommend having an HVAC professional perform annual furnace maintenance in the fall before heating season begins. Routine maintenance can help keep a system operating in tip-top shape and allow a technician to identify smaller issues before they become costly repairs. However, if replacement is recommended, the upfront price doesn’t necessarily have to stand between you and a more comfortable home. Depending on the financing plan you qualify for and your home’s heating and cooling needs, a new system
could cost less than you think. Homeowners can also explore utility rebates on qualifying equipment. 6. Test Your Thermostat Testing your thermostat early helps ensure your heating system is communicating properly before temperatures drop. Switch to heating mode early to make sure your system responds properly (just don’t forget to turn it back off). Replace batteries, if necessary, and consider whether a smart thermostat could provide additional comfort and control over your home’s heating schedule. 7. Seal Air Leaks Around Doors and Windows Drafts can make a home feel colder and allow warm air inside your house to escape. Inspect weatherstripping around doors and windows and replace it where needed. Caulk visible gaps to help keep conditioned air inside and improve your family’s comfort. 8. Check Your Home’s Insulation Finally, look at insulation in areas such as the attic, crawl spaces and basement. Doing so can help keep heated air where it belongs and reduce the workload on your heating system all winter long.

well-organized home isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating systems that make everyday life easier. When everything has a place, it’s simpler to maintain and keep clutter from creeping back in. Experts often recommend tackling organization one room at a time, sorting items into categories like keep, donate or discard before finding the right storage solutions. If your home could use a refresh, start small and work your way through each space with these organization tips. Entryway A dedicated “drop zone” ensures items used daily don’t end up scattered throughout the house. However, the entryway is also one of the easiest places for clutter to pile up. To keep it tidy: – Install wall hooks for coats, bags and backpacks – Use a small bench or basket for shoes – Add a tray or bowl for keys, sunglasses and everyday essentials Kitchen One of the most-used rooms in nearly every home, kitchen organization is key to making daily routines smoother. To stay organized: – Clear unnecessary items off countertops – Group pantry items by category, such
as snacks, baking supplies and canned goods – Store rarely used appliances in cabinets or a pantry Living Room Living rooms often serve many purposes, from relaxing and entertaining to working or studying. The key is creating storage that blends seamlessly with your decor: – Use decorative baskets for blankets, magazines and toys – Choose furniture with hidden storage like ottomans or coffee tables – Keep remotes and small electronics in a designated tray or organizer Bedroom Your bedroom should feel like a sanctuary. Too much clutter can make it harder to relax and unwind. To maintain order: – Keep only essential items on nightstands
productivity and reduce distractions: – Digitize or recycle unnecessary paperwork – Use desk trays and organizers for supplies – Create labeled folders or a filing system for important documents Storage Areas Garages, basements and storage rooms can quickly become catch-all spaces. A little planning can make them much easier to manage: – Label bins for seasonal decorations, tools or sports equipment – Use shelving and wall storage to maximize vertical space – Keep an inventory list for larger storage areas

Anticipating potential issues and planning for them is part of maintaining a home. Such anticipation is an acquired skill, but homeowners can use the experience of others to identify ways to prevent home-related issues before they arise. One issue homeowners may want to plan for is frozen pipes. The winter of 20252026 was notably cold. According to AccuWeather, the La Niña weather pattern was a driving force behind a particularly cold winter in various parts of the United States, including the northeast, midwest and mid-Atlantic regions. Temperatures in those regions were 10° to 15° F below normal, which AccuWeather notes laid the foundation for the most severe and frigid winter in nearly a decade. The extreme cold that characterized the winter of 2025-2026 forced some homeowners to confront issues they had not anticipated, including frozen pipes. Pipe insulation is an important part of home maintenance that some homeowners may not have been aware of as recently as ear-
ly 2026, but the following are some notable reasons to add this to your home-related to-do list before winter returns. Insulation prevents pipes from freezing. Frozen water inside pipes can start what’s essentially a chain reaction that can cause pipes to expand. When pipes expand, the resulting pressure can cause them to burst. By insulating pipes, homeowners can prevent them from freezing. Insulating pipes that are already behind a wall is not a simple job, so it’s best left to a professional. But pipes that are along exterior walls should be insulated to ensure they do not freeze when temperatures drop and remain low. Pipes in attics, basements and crawl spaces may be exposed, and homeowners may be able to insulate these on their own, though novices might still want to leave this important job to a professional. Insulating pipes can save you money. The United States Department of Energy reports that insulating hot water pipes is a notable way to save energy and money. According to the DOE, insulating water pipes reduces heat loss and can raise water temperature by as much as 2° to 4° F. That allows homeowners to lower the temperature setting on their water heaters, which saves money. Insulating pipes also reduces the time it takes for water
growth. Insulation is inexpensive. Homeowners who have grown accustomed to costly repairs and renovations should know that insulating pipes, particularly exposed pipes, is an inexpensive project. While it will cost more to insulate pipes within walls due to the extra work required to access such areas and address them once insulation has been installed, insulating those pipes, especially if they’re along exterior walls, can greatly reduce the risk for potentially costly damage down the road. Insulating pipes is a worthwhile undertaking for all homeowners, and can be particularly beneficial for those who live in areas with extreme weather in winter and summer.

to warm up when turning on a faucet or shower, which in turn leads to less water consumption and lower water bills. Insulation can reduce the risk of mold growth. Winter is not the only time of year it pays to have insulated pipes. According to the insulation experts, pipes are subject to mold growth. That can happen when pipes sweat in humid climates (think of a water bottle left out in the hot sun). The resulting condensation from sweating pipes can drip and lead to the growth of mold in surrounding areas, including within the walls. Mold growth in a home has been linked to various negative health outcomes, including respiratory issues. But insulation prevents the condensation that can lead to mold

all is the perfect season to celebrate trees as they transform the world into vibrant shades of red, orange, green and gold. You can do more than just admire existing trees — because in many areas, fall is also an ideal time to plant new ones. While spring is often seen as peak planting season, experts say cooler weather and autumn rains provide
ideal conditions for seedlings to retain moisture and establish their root systems gradually before winter dormancy, improving their future ability to adjust to summer heat and drier conditions. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, planting trees offers many benefits for the planet, wildlife and humans alike. From an environmental perspective, they help filter air and water, re-

recreation, improving overall health and well-being in your community. This autumn, use these expert tips from Eric North, program manager of urban forestry and ISA-certified arborist at the Arbor Day Foundation, to plan your fall tree planting and add a few new hues to your local landscapes. Choose the Right Tree Setting your trees up for success starts with choosing the right species. Before ordering seedlings, take time to identify species that are well-suited to your local climate, soil conditions and planting site. Also consider the tree’s mature height and how far the canopy will spread - it won’t stay small forever, so make sure you can give it space to grow. Think About Timing Although you can technically plant trees until the soil is too frozen to dig a hole, it’s best to schedule your fall tree planting at least six weeks before the ground freezes so the seedlings have time to adapt before winter. If you’re unable to plant your trees immediately after getting them, you can store them in a cool, dry place, making sure the
roots stay damp, for up to five days before putting them in the ground. Don’t Dig Too Deep A tree planted too deep may develop root and trunk problems that can affect its long-term health. Instead of digging deep, go wide to encourage roots to spread outward. Dig a hole roughly 3-4 times wider than the root system but no deeper than the root itself. When you put the tree in the hole, the root flare (where the trunk meets the roots) should sit level with the soil or slightly above it. Mulch with Care Adding 2-3 inches of mulch in a layer around the base of the tree can help insulate the soil and roots, retain moisture and suppress weeds. However, be careful to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk itself so you don’t create a “mulch volcano” that traps moisture against the bark.

bits, who may chew on bark or snap fragile branches. Installing a protective fence or breathable tree guard can help safeguard trees until they’re older and more capable of withstanding scavenging from hungry critters. Join the Cause with Trees Research from the Arbor Day Foundation’s Canopy Report shows most Americans want to live in neighborhoods with more trees, but only a minority report having planted a tree in the past year. However, if you’re feeling inspired to plant trees in your yard this fall, the organization is ready to help.
New members who join during the nonprofit organization’s fall membership drive will receive 10 free trees suitable for their region, along with clear instructions on how to plant and care for them. Whether you’re a first-time planter or a seasoned friend of the forest, you’ll receive ongoing support to ensure success in your efforts to grow a greener world. “People understand how important trees are for their communities, their health and the environment,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Many just need
a simple way to get started. Our fall membership drive puts trees directly into people’s hands and gives them the confidence to plant trees successfully.” The foundation has engaged tree planters in more than 90% of all American neighborhoods, thanks in large part to the organization’s membership drives each planting season. This fall, more than 2 million new trees are expected to be distributed. To sign up and choose your 10 free trees, visit Arborday.org/GetTrees, where you can also find additional advice on tree planting, care and more.

Water Frequently Cozy autumn rainstorms might share some of the workload here, but when the forecast looks clear, it’s up to you to water your newly planted seedlings. Keeping the soil consistently moist allows a young tree’s roots to stay hydrated and continue growing. Precise care instructions will depend on the type of tree and your location but expect to thoroughly water your trees about once a week until the ground freezes. Mr. Handyman, a home improvement service, says the general recommendation is to get the gutters cleaned at least twice a year: once in the spring after trees have dropped their seeds, and again in the fall after all leaves have fallen. People with heavier amounts of natural debris may need more frequent cleanings. A professional gutter service will typically include inspection of the entire gutter system; removal of all debris from gutters and downspouts; flushing of gutters and downspouts to ensure water flows correctly; assessment of water being directed away; and identification of areas in need of repair. Gutter cleaning is an important step that safeguards a home by keeping gutters and downspouts in working order.

Handyman services and professional gutter cleaners already have the gear to reach gutters and tackle the mess, unlike some homeowners who will have to purchase tools. Pros are trained in safety. Gutter cleaning professionals are trained in proper safety procedures and have the right equipment to safely scale homes. Gutter cleaning involves climbing ladders, walking on roofs, and handling slippery debris. It also may require working close to electrical and cable wires entering the home. Homeowners who don’t know how to navigate these conditions safely risk falls or other injuries. Pros can spot other damage. Professionals may spot damage to a home that homeowners do not see. This may include cracked seams, loose fasteners, sagging sections, and even roof damage. This allows homeowners to get a jump on the problem early on before it progresses to something more serious. Pros save homeowners time. One of the obvious perks to letting a professional clean the gutters is that it saves homeowners time. The expert can get the job done in less time and more efficiently than a novice weekend warrior.

time to give your plant a drink. Add warm or room-temperature water until you see moisture come out of the pot’s drainage holes then let the soil dry before watering again. Consider the Soil, Pot and Growth Space Use a high-quality potting mix designed for indoor plants along with pots featuring proper drainage. If you prefer decorative planters without holes, consider placing your plant in a smaller pot inside the decorative one to ensure proper drainage. As plants grow, they may need repotted to give their roots room to spread and continue healthy growth. Nourish During the Growing Season Plants use more nutrients in spring and summer, so feed them with a balanced, diluted fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active months. In fall and winter, most indoor plants grow more slowly and need less feeding. Also remember to regularly prune dead or yellowing leaves to help plants focus on new growth.

ush greenery can add a sense of calm to many homes and bringing it indoors can help transform nearly any room into a relaxing oasis. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just beginning your indoor gardening journey, this guide can help you get started — and succeed in — growing healthy plants indoors. Choose the Right Plants Not all houseplants are created equal, and the first step toward a flourishing indoor garden is picking plants that align with your home’s conditions. If your home has several bright and sunny rooms, light-loving varieties will likely thrive. For shadier spots, look for low-light tolerant plants, which are often easier to care for and more forgiving. Provide Adequate Light Most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light - that soft glow when positioned just inside a window (and turned regularly for even light). However, some can tolerate lower light levels. If natural sunlight is limited where you live, consider grow lights that mimic the sun’s spectrum and help plants keep their color and strong growth without plenty of daylight. Avoid Overwatering Too much water can lead to root rot and is one of the most common mistakes even the most experienced gardeners make. Rather than watering on a strict schedule, check the soil first. If the top inch is dry, it’s usually

Simple swaps, a little DIY and some inexpensive purchases can go a long way toward freshening up the place you lay your head. Better Bedding If you can’t remember the last time you bought a new comforter, it may be time to snag one. Think beyond the luxury home stores and check out discount home decor retailers and even thrift stores, where you can often find new, unopened bedding at a fraction of the cost. A fluffy throw blanket in a dynamic new color might be the perfect way to rejuvenate your bed. Playful Pillows Few things spruce up a bedroom more than new throw pillows. Available in a myriad of sizes and shapes - from squares to rectangles to asymmetrical - there is no shortage of ways to use these functional pieces to brighten up a space. Uplifting Light Old-fashioned lamps, ancient wall sconces and dusty chandeliers can make a room feel stale. Scouring consignment stores and estate sales for new lighting can take a bedroom from dated to delightful without spending a ton of cash. If big box stores are more your thing, you can find budget lamps in unexpected departments; for example, try the back-to-school sections for dorm-friendly finds like twinkle lights and small bedside

Punchy Paint Repainting a room is a doable DIY project, and it can make a huge difference in how a room looks and feels. Give yourself time to peruse the countless paint swatches at specialty paint stores or home improvement stores. If you’ve always gravitated toward earthy tones, maybe opt for a color with a little more depth or saturation. If brighter hues are your thing, go a little darker. If you love the idea of painting but worry about buyer’s remorse, start with an accent wall. Heavenly Hardware Functional hardware like drawer pulls and doorknobs can be replaced without much effort or money. Secondhand stores, online marketplaces and even furniture boutiques can be a goldmine for offbeat and unique hardware. Be sure to think beyond your bedside, too. Wardrobe handles, closet rods, sconces, wall hooks and hinges can be swapped out easily and inexpensively.

Small watering cans, lightweight trowels and child-sized gloves help kids participate safely and comfortably. 5. Encourage Creativity Gardens don’t have to be all work. ardening is a simple way to bring families together while simultaneously teaching kids hands-on lessons about nature, responsibility and healthy living. Whether you have a backyard garden, a few containers on the patio or are looking for a starting point, getting your children involved in planting and caring for plants can spark curiosity and create lasting memories. To get started, consider these family-friendly tips: 1. Start Small Begin with a manageable project, such as a few containers, a small garden bed or a single planter box. This helps keep the experience fun rather than overwhelming and allows children to see progress quickly. 2. Let Kids Choose the Plants Giving your children a say in what goes into the garden can help build excitement and a sense of ownership. Ask them to pick a few colorful fruits, vegetables or flowers that grow quickly, such as sunflowers, cherry tomatoes, mint, sugar snap peas or marigolds.

utdoor entertaining spaces have come a long way over the last several decades. While a simple deck or patio might once have been the norm, outdoor entertaining spaces have now evolved into multi-purpose spaces featuring full kitchens, living rooms equipped with televisions, and areas to gather around a fireplace or built-in firepit. While hardscaping garners considerable attention when planning an outdoor entertaining space, landscaping should not be overlooked. Many homeowners want to enjoy their outdoor entertaining spaces without having to spend too much time tending to the surrounding grounds, which can make these low-maintenance landscape features the perfect fit. Native plants: Native plants are low maintenance because they are naturally adapted to the local climate. That means homeowners won’t have to expend extra effort and energy watering plants or amending the soil. Non-native species may provide some bold colors,
but that comes at the cost of additional maintenance. There’s also an environmental cost when planting non-native species, as the United States Environmental Protection Agency warns that non-native species typically displace natives, which can adversely affect the local ecosystem. Perennials: Homeowners looking to accent their outdoor entertaining areas with flowers can choose perennials over annuals. Perennials live for three or more years, and some species can even live for a decade or more. While they might require some seasonal pruning, perennials will not need to be replanted each year like annuals. Tolerant plants: Plants that can tolerate the local climate generally fall under the native category. But it’s especially important that homeowners who don’t want to expend much effort on landscape maintenance look for plants that can tolerate drought. A recent study from researchers at UCLA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and CIRES predict drought conditions will last longer, cov-

er wider areas, and become more severe as the climate continues to warm. Drought-resistant plants may still require some watering if such predictions hold true. However, such plants will not require as much maintenance as those that are less equipped to handle drought. Homeowners who choose plants with drought-tolerance in mind won’t have to spend as much time watering and also can protect their financial investment. Outdoor entertaining spaces are meant to be enjoyed. And homeowners may enjoy such spaces a lot more

How Invasive Pests Spread and How You Can Help Stop Them
I
nvasive pests can hide in places you’d never expect, and once they spread, they can destroy the trees, plants and food people rely on every day. These pests pose a serious threat to agriculture, forests, ecosystems and the food supply. Many invasive species cannot travel far on their own; instead people unknowingly move them from place to place. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, invasive pests hitchhike on everyday items such as plants, produce,
firewood, vehicles and outdoor equipment. That makes many common activities – from traveling and online shopping to camping and gardening – potential “pathways” for invasive pests to move and reach new areas. Understanding these pathways is the first step to stopping pests before they spread. Traveling Abroad When you travel abroad and return from another country, the agricultural items you bring back can introduce new invasive pests into the U.S. and threaten crops or trees that have no natural defenses against them.

purchasing and make sure sellers follow all labeling and shipping rules. Partaking in Outdoor Activities When you spend time outdoors hiking, camping, hunting or fishing, you could inadvertently spread invasive species. For example, transporting firewood from one location to another can spread tree-killing insects, such as the emerald ash borer, which can live inside the wood and emerge later in a new area. The safest choice is to buy or use firewood where you burn it. Additionally, clean all outdoor clothing, gear, equipment and vehicles before leaving an area. Moving Outdoor Equipment When you move to a new home, your move can create another opportunity for
invasive insects to travel. Before relocating patio furniture, grills, trailers or lawn equipment, inspect and clean them carefully. Look for insects, plant debris and egg masses like spotted lanternfly egg masses, which can blend into outdoor surfaces and look like smears of mud or clumps of dirt. A few minutes of checking and cleaning before you move can help prevent pests from invading your new neighborhood. Invasive pests cost the U.S. billions of dollars every year and damage forests, farms, parks and backyards. Stopping invasive pests starts with simple steps anyone can take: checking what you pack, clean, move and buy. When everyone does their part, fewer pests spread and communities stay healthier and more resilient.
Visit aphis.usda.gov/hungrypests to learn more about how invasive pests spread and the simple steps you can take to help stop them and protect America’s agriculture and natural resources. Invasive Pest Protection Checklist * Declare all food, plants and agricultural items when returning from another country. * When ordering items online, check where the products ship from and verify U.S. import rules before buying. * If you’re camping, buy firewood where you plan to burn it. Clean clothing, gear and vehicles before leaving. * Before moving to a new home, inspect outdoor furniture and equipment, looking closely for egg masses or insects.

Even harmless-looking fruit, seed packets or souvenirs made with plant materials can carry pests such as fruit flies and diseases like citrus canker. That’s why it’s critical travelers declare food, plants and other agricultural products when entering the country from abroad. Shopping Online Just because you can order seeds and plants from sellers around the world, it doesn’t mean those items are legal or safe to import. In fact, some invasive snails and plant diseases have entered the U.S. this way. Many agricultural products from overseas require permits, inspections or special paperwork before they can enter the country. Buyers should check where an item ships from, learn the import requirements before

irst impressions can make a big difference - especially when it comes to potential home buyers deciding whether they can envision themselves signing a deed. If you’re actively selling your home or just contemplating how to increase your property’s curb appeal for the future, these simple tips can capture that wow factor without breaking the bank. Grab the Power Washer Take a weekend to blast away the grime on exterior surfaces and see what a dramatic difference it can make when things are sparkling clean. With a power washer, you can make quick work of dirty siding, muddy walkways and stained driveways. If you feel like your home looks tired, a good cleaning might be just the thing to wake it up - with no expensive paint job required. Refresh Your Landscaping
Trees, shrubs and plants add so much life and color to outdoor spaces. Your yard doesn’t need to look like it fell out of a magazine, but don’t underestimate the power of fresh mulch, trimmed greenery, weeded flower beds and a mowed lawn. When landscaping looks healthy and cared for, it automatically makes a property feel more polished and welcoming. Paint the Front Door Your front door is the natural focal point of your home’s exterior, so if it’s seen better days, that can make the rest of the house seem worn and dated too. However, there’s an easy solution: Pick a paint color that matches the aesthetic of your property, grab a paint brush and transform your door with a look that makes your porch feel more current. Add Window Boxes or Shutters Windows are another great place

roof is a vital component of a home that protects the structure from the elements and ensures that sun, rain, wind, and snow do not compromise the integrity of interior spaces. The average asphalt shingle roof found on many homes lasts between 15 and 30 years. Alternative roofing materials, such as metal or clay tiles, can last much longer. Homeowners who stay in a home for many years will likely need to replace a roof at some point. Choosing when to replace the roof may come down to selecting the right season. Experts typically consider fall the prime time to upgrade a roof for a variety of reasons. Moderate temperatures: Fall weather tends to be comfortable in many regions of the country. Experts say fall temperatures are better suited for roofing and allow materials to work the best. When temperatures are too hot, shingles can become soft and prone to scuffing, while cold temperatures can make materials brittle and difficult to seal. Comfort for workers: The same moderate conditions can make it easier for roofing contractors to get the work done. It can be extremely hot on a roof during summer, necessitating frequent breaks for workers. Winter weather conditions

are not ideal for working on a roof, with snow and ice making things slippery. Fall weather can help workers feel more comfortable. Avoid the rush: Spring and early summer are peak seasons for roofing contractors due to post-winter repairs. Homeowners may experience shorter wait times, better pricing and flexible scheduling if they opt for a fall roof replacement. Prepare for winter: Getting a roof in the fall means having a new and functional barrier against winter storms that can be hard on old roofs. It also means the roof will be ready for rainy, spring weather. Fall is an ideal time to replace a roof for many reasons. Homeowners can use the summer to vet various roofing contractors and come up with a package that fits their schedules and budgets.

Cabinets and drawers can contain a myriad of dangerous items, from cleaning products to sharp objects and medications. Even if you have rooms gated off, treat safety latches and locked storage receptacles as a second line of defense to make sure babies and toddlers can’t rummage where they shouldn’t. Stress-Test Furniture As babies and toddlers transition from crawling to walking, they often try using furniture to pull themselves up. Tall or unstable objects like TV stands, small tables and bookshelves can tip over if they aren’t properly secured. Try giving these objects a shake to see whether they’re easily moveable or wobbly; if so, anchor them to the floor or wall when possible. While you’re at it, check for sharp corners at the right height to bonk little heads and cover them with softer edge protectors. Cover Outlets and Stow Cords Electrical outlets can be tempting targets for curious fingers. Outfit them with covers or plastic safety caps, especially if you don’t already have tam-
per-resistant receptacles with built-in mechanisms to block foreign objects from entering the slots. As you’re going about your outlet audit, pay attention to cords as well. When possible, tuck them away or secure them with cord

Outsmarting a baby can be harder than it sounds — especially when it comes to transforming your home into a safe place for them to explore. Through their eyes, a coffee table becomes a climbing opportunity, a dangling phone charger looks like a teething toy and a cabinet of cleaning supplies could be an exciting travel destination. Babyproofing is about anticipating those discoveries before little ones make them. In honor of National Baby Safety Month, consider these tips to make your home safer all year round. Install Gates and Doorknob Covers Crawling babies and stairs are a bad combination. Make sure the two never have the chance to meet by securely installing safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases to thwart young explorers. Gates or doorknob covers can also block access to other rooms and areas you’d prefer to keep off limits, like kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas. Use Safety Latches Wisely
organizing systems, and block access to objects like lamps where cords can be used for tugging and toppling. See the World at Their Level Although it might feel silly, one of the best ways to spot hazards around your home is to scout for them from a baby’s perspective. Try getting as close to the floor as you can then look around each room for anything that could interest a young child and pose potential danger. In particular, keep an eye out for small objects that could become choking hazards, like dropped coins, batteries or loose toy pieces.

al, plan for at least a 1-1 2/2-inch entrance hole, a 5-by-5-inch interior space and 2 inches or more of roof overhang. Step 2: Gather Materials and Tools Most DIY birdhouses can be built with basic materials and tools you may already have at home, including untreated cedar or pine wood, screws or nails, wood glue, sandpaper and exterior-safe paint as well as a measuring tape, pencil, saw and drill. Step 3: Measure and Cut Wood Measure and cut wood to make the front panel, back panel, two side panels, floor and roof. Then sand all edges for smooth assembly. Step 4: Drill Holes Using a hole-saw bit, drill the entrance hole into the front panel. Position it a few inches below the roofline to keep predators out. Next, drill 2-3 small drainage holes in the floor piece to prevent water buildup and help keep the birdhouse dry. Step 5: Assemble the Birdhouse Attach the side panels to the back panel using screws or nails. Add the

all is a great time for homeowners to prioritize exterior maintenance around their properties. Doing so can make exterior areas less vulnerable to potentially harsh winter weather, but some projects also can prevent damage to a home and its hidden components as well. Conventional wisdom notes the importance of shutting off outdoor faucets before temperatures drop below freezing. According to the Illinois-based Citizens Utility Board, this strategy is designed to prevent pipes from freezing over the winter. Pipes that freeze can eventually burst, which could lead to a host of harmful and costly side effects. Fall is a great time to drain and shut off outdoor faucets because temperatures in many regions are still above freezing when late fall gives way to winter, and grasses and plants typically are not still being watered in late fall. In areas where winter tends to arrive in November as opposed to the third week of December, it can be beneficial to drain and turn off outdoor faucets in mid-fall, if not earlier. When turning off outdoor faucets for
the winter, be sure to remove any hoses or faucet connections. In addition, turn off the outdoor water supply valve. Homes with more than one outdoor faucet will likely have more than one supply valve, so be sure to turn each one off. Though supply valves theoretically can be anywhere in a home, they tend to be in a basement, crawl space, firstfloor laundry room (look near a slop sink if your home has one), or even a garage. Once all outdoor supply valves are turned off, go outside and turn each faucet on at full blast. Let all the water out until it comes to a stop. Homeowners who forget to do this before the mercury drops below 32°F can rest assured that pipes will not necessarily freeze even if temperatures are below freezing. American Family Insurance® notes that pipes that are not insulated typically will not freeze until temperatures reach 20°F and remain at that point or below for a few hours. However, it’s still best to make turning off outdoor faucets part of your fall home maintenance routine, so you don’t forget this important and simple task until it’s too late.

closed windows or doors but can still feel drafts, then there are leaks that will need to be sealed. Gaps: Gaps around windows and doors that are letting outdoor air in typically are noticeable to the naked eye. You might see light coming in through small cracks on a sunny day. These gaps may only be in one or two places, but that’s enough to adversely affect energy bills. Unwelcome guests: Pests or insects may

home through the leak. Over time, wet paint or wallpaper dries and can begin to peel. This is a potentially significant issue because it can lead to mold infestation and even structural damage to a home. The EPA characterizes sealing behind windows and doors as a moderate to difficult project. If leaks are detected, homeowners can benefit from hiring a professional to do the job quickly and correctly. Leaks around windows and doors can prove costly if they’re not addressed promptly. As winter approaches, investigating for leaks and addressing any that are found can save money and ensure a home stays comfortable when the temperatures drop.

hen pondering projects around a house, it’s easy to overlook small tasks and direct your focus toward more significant undertakings. Small projects might not generate the reactions that larger projects do, but even the simplest tasks can go a long way toward making a home more comfortable. Sealing leaks around windows and doors is unlikely to make any homeowner’s list of dream projects. However, as the moderate temperatures of fall give way to harsh winter weather, homeowners who seal leaks around their doors and windows may be surprised by how effective this simple project can be at reducing energy costs and making a home more comfortable. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that sealing inefficient windows and doors can reduce annual utility bills by 7 to 15 percent. That’s a potentially significant cost savings, particularly in an era marked by rising utility costs. Before homeowners seal their windows and doors, they can first look for signs that these areas are allowing outdoor air in. The United States Environmental Protection Agency notes there are some obvious signs that a home has leaks around the windows and doors. Those signs include: Drafts: If you place your hand around
be another indicator that there are gaps around windows or doors. If you consistently see insects near a particular entryway or window, or signs of pests near doorways, that’s likely because there’s a gap or hole in these areas that’s enabling them to access the interior of your home. Odors: It’s not only your sense of vision that might detect leaks, but also your sense of smell. If you notice exterior odors inside your home even though doors and windows are closed, then leaks around these areas may be the culprit. Peeling paint or wallpaper: Peeling paint or wallpaper is another potential indicator of a leak around a door or window. This can occur when water is entering the

How to Make a Real Estate Listing Stand Out
T
he real estate market is notably competitive. While the competitive nature of real estate is often discussed in terms of buying, sellers might face some stiff competition when trying to make their properties stand out. The popularity of real estate listing websites like Zillow, Trulia and Redfin has made it easier than ever for buyers to find properties for sale. But those sites feature so many listings that it’s not always easy for sellers to make their properties stand out. With that in mind, homeowners can work with their real estate agents or realtors to tailor a listing that’s sure to draw the attention of buyers. Identify what makes your property unique. Homeowners can take a tour of their properties with their real estate representative to identify what makes their homes
and grounds unique. Details like the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and the total square footage certainly draw the attention of buyers, but neighborhoods tend to feature similarly sized properties. But an emphasis on unique features, whether it’s a fully finished basement or a recently remodeled outdoor living space, can make a listing stand out. Read a listing as if you were a prospective buyer. In addition to emphasizing the unique features of your home, you can read a draft of your listing to see if it would appeal to you if you were a buyer. Does the listing adequately convey what makes your property special? Is there enough information about the property? Does the listing get into specifics or is the description generalized? Buyers will look at an assortment of listings, and it can be easy to confuse

the property will come across as a red flag that will make buyers wonder what else sellers might be hiding. Highlight the area as well. Buyers aren’t just investing in a home, they’re investing in a place to set down roots. Consider the town where you live and use the listing to highlight its strong points. If your town is a walkable locale with a thriving local shopping and food district, emphasize that in your listing. If the town boasts a top-notch school system, be sure to allude to that in the listing. Sellers and their real estate representatives can employ various measures when writing a property listing to make it stand out.

one with another. Concise but detailed characterizations can increase the chances buyers remember your listing. Emphasize key characteristics in bullet points. A listing that’s too wordy may not be read in full, but work with your real estate representative to identify points of emphasis and even list those as bullet points to make the listing more reader-friendly. Be honest. Buyers come from all walks of life, but none want to read a listing and then feel as if they’ve been misled upon visiting a property. While it may seem as though everyone wants a move-in ready home, many buyers will not scoff at a listing that notes DIY potential. At the same time, if a home is indeed move-in ready, emphasize that so buyers who don’t want to swing any hammers know they won’t have to if they buy your home. An honest characterization will attract buyers, while a misleading description of
