William Swainson, FLS Willow, 'Hobarton' Tasmania Pencil, inscribed and signed 165 x 112 mm Swainson was a distinguished naturalist who purchased land from the New Zealand company and arrived in Wellington in 1841. Previously, he had spent some years in Malta and Sicily with the army during which time the Italian studies below would have been produced. He visited Victoria and Tasmania around 1850, and died in 1855. The following drawings are all laid down on paper or light board . They are all from a portfolio of his work from a private Wellington collection.
