Conditions of Sale
The highest bidder to be the purchaser , subject to the Auctioneers having a right to refuse the bidding of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the biddin~s , the lot in dispute to be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bidding , or the Auctioneers may declare the purchaser
No person shall advance less at a bid than a sum to be nominated by the Auctioneer and no bid shall be r e tracted
All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to b id or else to impose a reserve.
The purchaser to give his name , address and to pay down 10 per cent of the purchase money in part payment thereof In default of any of which matters the lot or lots purchased may be immediately put up again and resold.
All lots are sold as shown and with all faults , imperfections , and errors to description. The Auctioneers act as agents ; they have full discretion to refuse any bidding or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale without in either case giving any reason ; neither they nor the Vendor are responsible for errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot or fault or defect in it , and make no warranty whatever
The lots are at the buyer ' s risk from the fall of the hammer and are to be taken away at the buyer' s exP.ense , in default of which the Auctioneers will not hold themselves responsible if t he same are lost ,stolen , damaged , or otherwise destroyed, but they will be left at the sole risk of the purchaser If the lots are not cleared or paid for, they may then be sold immediately either publicly or by private treaty , without any notice being given to the defaulter.
Upon failure of the purchaser to comply with any of the above conditions the money deposited in part payments shall be forfeited , and the defaulter shall make good any loss arismg from the resa1e , together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales
No goods are to be removed while selling is in progress. Receipted invoices must be produced prior to delivery of any lot . The auctioneers reserve the right to request identification in the case of any purchaser not known to the Auctioneer who pays by cheque. Charging to credit cards will not be accepted as means of-payment.
No person being the purchaser of any item falling within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 shall be entitled to take possession of such item or to demand possession thereof from the Auctioneer unless and until such person produced to the Auctioneer a licence pursuant to the appropriate one of the two Acts referred to above

S.C. Brees, Surveyor and Engineer to the New Zealand Co. 1842-6, produced watercolours of the lower half of the North Island. Some of these watercolours were engraved by Henry
Melville for Bree's " Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" , published in London 1847 of which this is the original for illustration No. 50 on Plate 17.
In the foreground is Messrs Simmons & Hoggarty's windmill much as shown in the engraving, but the man with the two dogs walking towards the mill has become , in the engraving a Maori family coming toward the viewer. The engraver has taken some liberties with the landscape which, in the watercolour, is somewhat vague in its definition of landscape features. illustrated 6000-8000

D e ar Sir , In regard to the subject of the pi c ture you purch a sed from me , have a few
details just to hand The name of the woman is Te Aotiti Tumai . She was a Chieftainess of the Ngatitura Tribe and was the wife of a finely tattooed old warrior who fought at the battle of Tumu. At the time of her death in 1914 she was about 80 years of age . This is the only information concerning her that I have at present. Should I hear anything further I will write to you.
