Conditions of Sale

1. The highest bidder to be the purchaser, subject to the Auctioneers having a right to refuse the bidding of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the biddings, the lot in dispute to be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bidding, or the Auctioneers may declare the purchaser.

2. No person shall advance less at a bid than a sum to be nominated by the Auctioneer and no bid shall be retracted

3. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to bid or else to impose a reserve.

4. The purchaser to give his name, address and to pay down 10 per cent of the purchase money in part payment the reof. In default of any of which matters the lot or lots purchased may be immediately put up again and resold.

5. All lots are sold as shown and with all faults, imperfections, and errors to description. The Auctioneers act as agents; they have full discretion to refuse any bidding or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale without in either case giving any reason; neither they nor the Vendor are responsible for errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot or fault or defect in it, and make no warranty whatever.

6 The lot"are at the buyer 's risk from the fall of the hammer and are to be taken away at the buyer's expense, in default of which the Auctioneers will not hold themselves responsible; if the same are lost, stolen, damaged , or otherwise destroyed, b ut they wi ll be left at the so le risk of the purchaser. If the lots are not cleared or paid for, they may then be sold immediately either publicly or by private reaty, without any notice being given to the defaulter

7. Upon failure of the purchaser to comply with any of the above conditions the money deposited in part payments shall be forfeited, and the defaulter shall make good any loss arising from the resale , together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales

8. No goods are to be removed while selling is in progress. Receipted invoices must be produced prior to delivery of any lot The auctioneers reserve the right to request identification in the case of any purchaser not known to the Auctioneer who pays by cheque. Charging to credit cards wi ll not be accepted as means of payment.

"No person being the purchaser of any item falling within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 shall be entitled to take possession of such item or to demand possession thereof from the Auctioneer unless and until such person produced to the Auctioneer a licence pursuant to the appropriate one of the two Acts referred to above."

Portrait of Te Aitu Te lrikau , An Arawa Chieftainess oil on panel signed 19 X 14

Te Aitu te lrikau was an Arawa woman of high rank living at Maketu at the time of the Battle of Te Tumu Pa on 9 May, 1836. She was about five years old at the time

Goldie painted her a number of times from 1911 She travelled to Auckland to pose for him , and died in August 1914 at Ohinemutu . extract from C.F Goldie, Prints , Drawings and Criticism Taylor & Glen 1979

Four interesting related documents accompany the painting : A receipt from Goldie to James Stephens , 8

the purchaser of the portrait , for ten guineas , dated Nov 17, 1910 ; A letter to Goldie from Cpt. Mcdonald concerning the subject of the portrait , dated Rotorua Dec 13, 1910 ; A letter from James Stephens detailing a meeting with Aitu te lrikau and with attached faded photograph of the subject ; This fourth item is not related to this painting

but indicates the fee Aitu te lrikau would have been paid for her sittings The item being a receipt for eight shillings and sixpence paid to Te Aho te Rangi for a s itting dated Aug 14 , 1905 illustrated above 25,000-35 ,000

Fine Furniture sells well at Webb's

Following the record price of $53,500 paid at Webb's last April for an inlaid bonheur-du-jour by Anton Seuffert, the small marquetry chest of drawers pictured above fetched the excellent price of $20,000 at our recent antique and furniture sale in June.

Webb's have clients not only for fine paintings, but for fine furniture , fine jewellery, fine silver and porcelain and just about anything fine, including wine.
