Provenance : Purchased in 1904 directly from the artist and held in the same family for three generations. (Full particulars can be made available to the purchaser )
Harata Rewiri Tarapata was a descendant of two famous Chiefs , Tamati Waaka Nene and Eru

Goldie ' s earliest recorded Maori portraits date from 1900 and it is in these first few years that he is considered to have produced his finest works The later paintings most often being repetitions of his early subjects This portrait of Harata is probably the first of the nine or so he painted of her because the previously earliest recorded portrait is dated 1903

Anton Seuffert 1815-1887
Anton Seuffert was born in Bohemia in 1815 After working to set up a major exhibit at the Great Exhibition in London 1851 , he decided to settle in England where he met one Johann Martin Levien whose London based business was concerned with the importation of New Zealand native timbers It could be surmised that Seuffert , after this association with Levien , may have emigrated to New Zealand to supervise Levien ' s still existing cabinet making and timber procuring business He was naturalised in Auckland in 1861. He exhibited at the Dunedin Exhibition of 1865 and supplied furniture from his Elliott Street address to exhibitions in Vienna 1873, Sydney 1879 , London 1886 , where he achieved distinction In May 1869 he was appointed cabinet maker to His Royal Highness , The Duke of Edinburgh The following obituary notice appeared in the New Zealand Herald dated Aug. 8 , 1887: " Death is busy just now among old colonists. Among those who have passed away during the present week is Mr Anton Seuffert who has earned a worldwide fame for his artistic skill in inlaid and cabinet work, and the products of his skill in that branch , have been distributed to eve,y part of the civilised world. He was a native of Austria , one time foreman in one of the departments in the warehouses of Lister & Co of Vienna , Cabinet makers to the Emperor At the Great Exhibition of 1851 he was engaged on the exhibits of that firm which were then shown , and subsequently employed on designs of the furniture for Prince Lichenstein 's palace. Some 30 years ago, Mr Seuffert immigrated to New Zealand, settling at Auckland, where he has been so long and favourably known It will be remember that he executed a cabinet with inlaid work, consisting of 30,000 pieces, valued at 300 guineas , which was purchased and presented by the citizens of Auckland to Her Majesty the Queen He passed away peacefully on Saturday morning at the ripe age of 72 He leaves a widow and three sons and three daughters. Mr Seuffert 's art has not died with him , as he has studiously trained up his son , who promises to inherit all the .father's wonderful artistic skill in inlaid work ".
Of seven bonheur-du-jours known to have been made , we have traced four to collections in Australia , one is

in the Dominion Museum Wellington , another in the Auckland Institute and Museum. We believe this to be the last of the recorded bonheur-du-jours and possibly the desk made for Sir George Grey

Charles Blomfield 1848-1926
Paintings of the Thermal Region from the Collection of Maurice Lennard
Maurice Lennard , a retired Auckland barrister , was born in 1903 From his mother who was in Rotorua at the t ime of the Tarawera eruption , he acquired his enduring interest in the region. From an early age he collected literature and illustrations of the district. Paintings by Charles Blomfield who had made a specialty of paint ing the pink and white terraces , particularly appealed to him and he began a collection Some of these have been disposed of over the years, and others have been lent to public galleries , but his favourites he retained and these are catalogued below . Maurice Lennard has provided the catalogue notes accompanying each painting

This pre-eruption view of Rotokakahi shows the village of Epiha (Ephisus) built by the Maoris with the guidance of the missionary Thomas Chapman
Writing in 1860 , Lieutenant.Bates describes it as " the most picturesque pa I have ever seen , with whares and storehouses painted red , with peach trees and shrubs, encircled on three sides by the lake and enclosed by a stockade of posts ".
The island of Motutawa is said to have been the scene of the first exploits of Te Rauparaha and was said to be unhealthy owing to the burial of dead there

Collection : Maurice Lennard
This view of the Pink Terrace shows the White Terrace and Mount Tarawera in the background. The terrace covered about two and a half acres formed by the overflow of the Otukapuarangi (cloud of heaven) Geyser at its top. The geyser sent its silica charged waters over the terraces and dissolved oxides in the water caused the pink colouration At the bottom the terrace was white, becoming salmon pink deepening to a roseate hue higher up, and at the top a delicate primrose The surface was smooth and the basins a popular bathing place

The White Terrace Cups , Rotomahana oil on canvas signed and dated 1887

Collection : Maurice Lennard
The White Terrace was built on a much grander scale than the Pink , in a spreading arc of glistening pools covering about eight acres. The lower buttresses each held a lake of intense blue but higher up there was a profusion of smaller alabaster cups This is the only painting I know of the cup area and of this Blomfield says " It is very awkward when the hot water is running over Some of the pictures I have had to take standing in the hot water. John Francis Kavanagh 1903-1984
Sculpture by John Francis Kavanagh
F.R.B.S. from the collection of Margaret Kavanagh , his widow.
In 1979, the Auckland City Art Gallery arranged an exhibition of John Kavanagh ' s sculpture which included all the pieces in this catalogue. It was the only exhibition this retiring and modest man ever enjoyed in his adopted country , and it came very late in his life, just five years before he died. Lack of reputation in New Zealand must be due partly to the fact that his teaching position at Elam School of Art absorbed most of his energy , and his output here was small. Notable commissions in New Zealand included designing the seal in 1951 for the Medical Research Council. In 1956 he executed a bust of the eminent Auckland surgeon Sir Douglas Robb which was exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1957.
In 1935 John Kavanagh was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. At this time he was head of the department of Sculpture and Modelling at the Leeds College of Art.
Numerous commissions occurred over the next few years. For the Catholic Church of Our Lady in Leeds , he carved in limewood , Christ Triumphant on the Cross . This was the largest wooden figure made in England since the Renaissance In London , for the Catholic Hospital in Lambeth Road he executed a nine foot high limestone carving of Our Lady of Consolation which stood above the entrance to the Hospital. The bronze study for this carving was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1948 and is in this catalogue The most important commission at this period was to carve all the sculpture for the new Walthamstow Town Hall , including sixteen relief panels and five statues , each seven foot six inches high. During these years he exhibited regularly with the Royal Academy
The war years put an end to commissions and in 1947 he suffered a major disappointment that may have contributed to his decision to quite Europe and take up a teaching post in New Zealand .
An international competition was held to design the bronze door for the Basilica of Saint Pietro in the Vatican . Kavanagh worked very hard on his models but because of post war transport complications, they failed to reach the vatican within the allowed time and he was disqualified

He believed he had a very good chance of winning the commission and had he done so his reputation would have been secure for all time. John Kavanagh is represented in the Tate Gallery Collection, London. References for all the following works and a bibliography can be found in the catalogue for the Auckland City Art Gallery Exhibition 1979 Introduction by Eric Young

Sketch for International Air Race 1953 oil on board 28x51.5
Provenance: Mr Robert Allender, Sydney
During 1952, the artist received a commission from Tasman Empire Airways Ltd for a large painting to commemorate the London to Christchurch air race due to take place in October 1953 McCahon produced several studies for the subject , all titled Sketch for Teal These were shown in the 1953 Group Show in Christchurch together with Comet and the main International Air Race painting.
The above study was not included in the Group Show as it had already been gifted to the present owner , who was the publicity manager for the airline and the officer responsible for the commission. In a letter accompanying this study, the vendor comments ''The painting (International Air Race) had excited little public or art world interest. McCahon was virtually unknown and the painting was thought incomprehensible ." International Air Race was subsequently lost, and was presumed " thrown out with outdated publicity material " some years after the vendor had left the airline 7000-9000
