Frederick James Porter 1883-1944 and James Edward Buchanan Boswell 19061971
Porter was born in Auckland in 1883. He studied there , in Melbourne and at the Academie Julian under J.P. Laurens. When Porter arrived in Paris in the very early years of the new century, the city had everything to offer a young painter and was still the artistic centre of Europe. Although his intention was to stay for only two or three years, he became completely immersed in the stimulating cultural climate and remained in Europe until his death in 1944.
After studying at the Academie Julian for several years after his arrival in 1906 , Porter moved to England. He began exhibiting with the newly formed London Group, becoming a Member in 1921 , and Vice-Pres ident between 1925 and 1935. He was also an associate of the Campden Town Group and a friend of the great English painter , Walter Sickert.
In 1926 , he was elected to the London Artists ' Association formed the previous year with the financial help of Maynard Keynes and Samuel Courtauld. Courtauld purchased a number of his works for the famous Courtauld Collection in London. Porter also taught painting and drawing at the Central School of Art in London, from 1924 until the year of his death He was a prolific exhibitor both in London and elsewhere.
After his death, m ajor Memorial Exhibitions of his work were held at Julian's in Paris , and at the Lefevre Gallery in September 1945. His work is in the collections of major public galleries in New Zealand.
James Boswell was born at Westport. He was educated in Auckland at the Elam School of Art but went to London in 1925 where he met fellow New Zealander Frederick Porter. They became close friends and it was Porter who taught Boswell to paint.
In 1925 he studied at the Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein He exhibited work at Zwemmer 's, at the Lefevre and at Lucy Wertheim 's gallery.
In 1932 Boswell mad e two major decisions which were to alter the whole of his future life: he gave up professional painting for commercial ยท work and he joined the Communist Party. From that time on, his art was at the service of the worker's cause; he illustrated the Daily Worker, painted banners for hunger marchers and was a foundation member of the left-wing organisation, Artists Int erna tional , which later , with the impact of the Spanish Civil War , became Artist Against Fa c ism.
Boswell's cartoons which appeared in the Left Review broke away from what he himself called 'the middle class English code of good taste' and harnessed some of the fierce satirical energy of the German, George Grosz, a fellow communist who had escaped from Nazi Germany in 1933. James Boswell died on April 15th 1971.
The Auckland City Art Gallery has a large collection of his drawings.
