Summer Orientation 2010

This is not just any place. It’s your place.

Get started on becoming a member of our community.

You’re almost here. After months of answering the question, “so where are you going to college next year?,” Emmanuel is starting to feel like more than just a response, just a name, just a place. In a few weeks you’ll take your first steps as an Emmanuel student. You’ll be on campus, meeting people who will be a big part of your next four years. People who will impact the rest of your life. You’ll start to realize that this is not just any place. It’s your place. Inside this brochure you will discover some of the highlights of Orientation, as well as the things you can look forward to as an Emmanuel student. You’ll find insights from current students who share their thoughts on the various activities in which they’re involved and the community they enjoy and speak of often. In other words, everything you need to hit the ground running this fall. So, what now? Well, as you’re about to learn, that’s up to you. Welcome to Emmanuel!

Daniel J. Darcy Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities

Orientation 2010

Orientation is more than an introduction to Emmanuel, it’s a glimpse into what you can expect as a student here. It’s the start of the next chapter of your life.

First-Year Students What Happens at Orientation? Orientation is our first opportunity to welcome you as a member of the Emmanuel community. During the two-day program, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on Day 1 and concludes at 4:00 p.m. on Day 2, you’ll get a sneak peek of what life’s like here at Emmanuel. In addition to staying overnight in the residence halls and meeting your new classmates, we’ll help you get started on becoming an active member of our community. We’ve put together a full itinerary of activities for you, which you will receive upon your arrival to campus. Until then, here are a few highlights of what happens at Orientation:

Day 1 Meet Your Orientation Leaders Orientation Leaders (OLs) are a select group of current students dedicated to welcoming you, answering questions and introducing you to everything Emmanuel. Once you’ve checked in, you will meet in small groups with your assigned OLs, who will serve as resources to you throughout Orientation and be familiar faces around campus when you return for the fall semester.

Alison Amorello ’11

“The strong community of Emmanuel makes it easy to get to know everyone. It just feels like home.” As an Administrative Orientation Leader, Alison plays a big part in making your Orientation experience memorable. She’s a Resident Assistant as well, so helping new students adjust to college life is all in a day’s work for her. She’s a great resource to students interested in getting involved on campus. As an English major focusing on Writing & Literature, she writes for the College’s student newspaper, Le Renard. What she loves most about Emmanuel? Living in Boston.

Meet Your Academic Advisor Our Office of Academic Advising provides the support you need to attain your academic goals and helps you transition into life as a college student. You’ll first meet your Academic Advisor during your Assessment of Foundation Skills and later during course selection on Day 2. Please note your Assessment of Foundation Skills session includes online testing in computer literacy, mathematics (calculators may be used) and French or Spanish, if you took either in high school. Find out more at www.emmanuel.edu/orientation.

Succeeding in the Classroom The sense of community at Emmanuel is as much academic as it is social. Here you’ll be introduced to members of our faculty and Academic Resource Center (ARC) staff who will inform you about all that is available to you as an Emmanuel student.

A Day In The Life Your OLs showcase their acting skills with these skits based on scenarios you may soon find yourself in as a college student. Whether it’s how to get involved with student activities, where to turn for academic help, or the ins and outs of getting around on the “T” – Boston’s public transportation system – the OLs will walk you through a day in the life of a typical Emmanuel student.

Day 2 Course Selection With assistance from your Academic Advisor, you will choose your course schedule for your first semester at Emmanuel. This is your opportunity to peruse our extensive liberal arts and sciences offerings and begin your journey towards a college degree. We recommend reviewing the 2010-2011 Academic Catalog online at www.emmanuel.edu/orientation prior to arriving at Orientation to get a feel for what our academic programs offer.

Get Connected Here you’ll receive your official Emmanuel e-mail, learn about the College’s web site, and access your login and password for the Emmanuel Portal – our internal communication system where you can find College news and announcements, Online Academic Resources, Student Financial Services information and applications in one convenient location.

The Office of Multicultural Programs is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for Emmanuel students to explore issues of diversity and multiculturalism as well as to strengthen the connection for all students with each other and the Emmanuel College community. The Office plans thematic programs (Black History Month, Native American Heritage Month, Latino Heritage Month and the Lunar New Year), new initiatives and special events.

< International Hospitality Night is one of the many annual multicultural events to look forward to at Emmanuel.

Student Resource Fair What interests you? Is it Athletics? Study Abroad? Internships? Alternative Spring Break? It will all be on display at the Student Resource Fair. Staff members will be on hand to inform you about the resources available to you as an Emmanuel student. Offices include: Athletics, Campus Ministry, Internships and Career Development, Campus Safety, and Student Activities and Multicultural Programs.

Meet the Dean of Students Before the conclusion of Orientation, you’ll have the opportunity to meet Emmanuel’s Dean of Students, Dr. Joe Onofrietti – a great resource for all our students. Through this interactive workshop, “Dr. Joe” will address Emmanuel’s academic policies and procedures with the help of the OLs.

Student Financial Services Prior to your arrival it is recommended that you complete the Federal Stafford Loan online Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note (visit www.emmanuel.edu/ orientation for more details.) During Orientation, however, staff members from the Office of Student Financial Services will be available to assist you with any questions. “When I transferred here I made a point to get involved right away. It made a big difference.” In Emmanuel, Megan recognized an opportunity to become a part of something special. Since she arrived she has never looked back. She’s an Administrative Orientation Leader, captain of the women’s tennis team and a member of CASE – Campus Activities & Student Events – so she knows what’s happening on campus as well as how important it is to be an active member of this community. What to Expect from Emmanuel

Orientation will give you a taste of what life’s like at Emmanuel, but it’s up to you to explore all the opportunities – on campus, in the classroom and around town!

Emmanuel College’s campus, pictured below, resides in the Fenway area of Boston, close to a world-class medical area, the Charles River and Fenway Park.

Campus Life Emmanuel is a community alive with a strong sense of mission, a vibrant, confident faith and a joyful spirit. It’s a place where you can be yourself, explore new interests and pursue your goals. You’ll experience Emmanuel at its best when you kick off the men’s and women’s basketball seasons during Midnight Madness, celebrate the history of the College during Founders’ Day, learn about cultures from around the world during International Hospitality Night, and cap off a successful year with the Clambake in the spring. As for the opportunities to get involved? We’ll let the list of possibilities speak for itself.

“There is a great mixture of clubs and organizations that represent all of the different people and interests at Emmanuel. Taking part in extracurricular activities here has given me the ability to positively impact our community.” - NyLeesa Graham ’12 Orientation Leader

Academic Life At Emmanuel, you will find the support needed to shape and direct you as you plan your future. It all starts the moment you arrive. Through our First-Year Seminar, you will work closely with a member of the faculty and a group of classmates to learn about the academic traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, and the expectations and values of our academic community. With the help of your Academic Advisor, you’ll develop a unique academic plan and find the guidance you need as your navigate your first few semesters. Unsure of a major? Worry not. Our Majors Exploration Program (MEP) helps you and your Advisor determine an appropriate area of study based on your interests, values, personality, skills and extracurricular activities. At our Academic Convocation, you’ll help us mark the start of the academic year. You’ll enjoy discussions in the humanities and arts at our Wyant Lecture Series, and hear from top researchers in the sciences when we host the Merck Monthly Science Seminar Series as well. Maybe you’ll accept the challenge of our Honors Program or take part in some of the exciting clubs and honor societies listed to the right. Or perhaps you’ll take advantage of Boston as your extended classroom and explore all the research, service learning and internship opportunities available. Whatever you choose, it’s all at your fingertips. Are you ready?

Academic traditions are an important part of the Emmanuel experience. Many of these traditions can be traced back to the very first years of the College’s founding. During your first year, you’ll be officially welcomed into the Emmanuel community. From there, you can look forward to Sophomore Pinning, Junior Ring & Tassel Ceremony, and Senior Cap & Gown.

City Life Boston is an amazing city filled with history, culture and excitement. It’s home to 250,000 college and university students, a popular tourist destination for many, and it’s a big part of what makes Emmanuel special. Our hope is that you won’t just live and learn in the city of Boston – you’ll experience it. You can stroll a few blocks to a Red Sox game or find yourself amongst exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts within minutes. Through our various service programs, you will have the chance to head out into the city and make a positive impact. Looking to gain real-world experience? Emmanuel students intern at some of the most prestigious locations in and around Boston. Plus, as a member of the Colleges of the Fenway (COF), Emmanuel offers you the opportunity to meet the students at nearby colleges and universities, cross register at COF schools, participate in intramurals and more. There’s so much to see and do around Boston. Let your feet lead the way.

Visit www.emmanuel.edu/accepted and select “Life in Boston” for information on where to go, things to do and to look closer at the city you will call home.

At the core of Emmanuel is a commitment to service. Last year, 85% of our student body participated in community service, contributing over 31,000 hours of their time to help others. As a result, Emmanuel was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, one of just four Massachusetts colleges/universities to earn the award. How can you get involved?
