A very warm welcome to the Sky Bet Ebor Festival and the flagship race of our season – the Group 1 Juddmonte International – the Longines World’s Best Race!
Today is the richest raceday we have ever hosted with well over at over £2m in prize money – the result, attracting a fabulous line up of the best of horses and jockeys from around the world, for us to all enjoy. I hope you have a wonderful Juddmonte International day. For nearly four decades, our showpiece race has been supported by Juddmonte - we remain hugely appreciative of their fabulous backing and wish them and their guests a wonderful day.
This year’s renewal looks to be mouthwatering clash of continents, distances, sexes and racing powerhouses. Between them the six contenders have amassed 18 Pattern race victories and £8.7 million in prize money. Emphatic winner of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, Ombudsman, renews rivalry with the barely believable winner of the Coral Eclipse in Delacroix. Unbeaten in four races, Daryz, provides the French challenge while Japanese Derby winner Danon Decile arrives following his scintillating victory in the Sheema Classic. See The Fire is unbeaten at York and was indeed on fire in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Middleton in May – literally bred for success today as dam and sire both won this race. All things considered – what a race we have in prospect!
Marvellous though our feature race is, the rest of the card is also dripping with quality. The Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur is a fascinating contest as well as being one that shapes the final Classic or even the Arc – Lambourn joins us as both the English and Irish Derby winner Just two years ago, Continuous, became the 15th colt to achieve the Knavesmire-Town Moor double
Every race this week will tell a story; the opening Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Stakes sees a field of 20 over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs, with Copper Knight bidding to add to his already record number of seven wins in what will be an incredible 34 runs at York. It recognises the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club over the three weekdays of this festival and is exactly the sort of competitive contest that both those betting into World Pool or with festival supporters, Sky Bet, will relish.
The Group Three Tattersalls Acomb is the first of ten Group races over these four days, for the second time there have been no restrictions to entry which has contributed to an eight-runner field. Like so many races this week it now forms part of a global sporting narrative, with the winner offered guaranteed free entry with travel expenses to the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Friday 31 October.
The richest nursery handicap in the land, one of 13 contests this week to be backed by the headline sponsor of the Festival, Sky Bet, concludes today’s card. It will continue a pattern in the annual joust between bookie and Knavesmire regular, that will culminate in Saturday’s £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor
We have some top class racing today, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors.
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Grantley Hall Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as Grantley Hall themselves, The 8th Sign, The Bothy and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
Visit our equine ambassador, Goldream, the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Gardet Origine champagne for just £46.50 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie at the living flower wall; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table
BUSTARDTHORPE END
SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT
Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop
MR MOWITALL
Joining the grounds team over winter were a trio of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself
THE TEAM NEVER REST
Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).
A LIVING FLOWER WALL
OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND
The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE
BARS HAVE IT
Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie
NEW ON THE MENU
Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.
If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.
Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

TOP JOCKEY AT YORK
COPPER KNIGHT: WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE
EYES ON OUR FIRST RACE WHEN COPPER KNIGHT, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER EIGHT.
The Denham family first ran Copper Knight at York back in 2017 when he won the first of his seven races. It was an assertive performance over then stable mate Rasheeq and was very much a sign of things to come. He had further success at York before taking his most prestigious prize at the track. The John Smith’s City Walls Stakes 2019, his first Listed success. His superb seventh victory came back in July.
A plaque has been erected in his honour on the pre-parade ring side of the weighing room, where it reads ‘winning most’, as he may well not be done with winning at York just yet! Last July Copper Knight made history by registering another win on the Knavesmire. He remains a stalwart of Tim Easterby’s operation, with a record breaking seven wins. Will Copper Knight continue to make history with an eighth win today on his 34th run at York?

RACE DESCRIPTION
Distance: 5f 89y
Race Type:
Prize Money: £120,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Centre
The first of seven races with at least a six-figure purse today, it is a competitive handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs.
Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated, and so will carry the most weight – Jordan Electrics and Roman Dragon both share the burden of carrying the top weight today.
So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Copper Knight is one to carry both, as the winning-most horse ever here after seven previous wins.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
The Man returned to the fray with an impressive display over 5f at the Dante meeting, while Trefor finished a fine second at Windsor and may also feature. Vintage Clarets landed the Shergar Cup Dash in good style last time, but could only manage eighth in this last year behind the runner-up JORDAN ELECTRICS. Jim Goldie’s sprinter found the smart Jm Jungle too good on that occasion and another bold bid looks likely with a couple of recent runs under his belt. Brazen Bolt and Squealer are others to consider

MAGICAL MEMORIES: ROBERTO AND FRANKEL
It was in 1972 that an idea that had been some years in the making became reality - a Group 1 race joined the then three-day Ebor Festival with the first running of the International, over a mile and a quarter, designed to attract the best of the classic generation and the best of the older brigade.
If the York organisers were looking for a vote of confidence for their new idea, they more than got it, as the inaugural running produced a field of dreams.
Brigadier Gerard was unbeaten at that stage in 15 races and the four-year-old lined up as hot favourite against the first two home in the Derby- the winner Roberto being ridden by the Panamanian Braulio Baeza after the late Lester Piggott who rode him at Epsom, decided to ride the runner up Rheingold that day.
The stands were packed but the script wasn’t read by the entire
cast Roberto set off in front and although Brigadier Gerard gave chase, Joe Mercer accepted the inevitable in the final furlong.
The crowd were shocked, but in hindsight the Brigadier’s failure by 3 lengths to give weight to a Derby winner, when the first two both broke the course record may not have been the disaster some portrayed.
York’s new race made the headlines and has continued to do so.
To the wider world, Wednesday 22nd August 2012 was just another day, but to the record opening day crowd packed into the Knavesmire it was to be anything but with the 127 seconds at its heart, it is remembered clearly over a decade later.
There was even an extra buzz at Kings Cross station that morning catching one of the early East Coast Expresses. The Guards on the train even mentioned a certain Frankel as we made our final approach to York Station.
It was to be Frankel’s 13th race - a perfect dozen won. But this Juddmonte International was different.
Brigadier Gerard
Roberto (Image: PA)
Could he dispatch fresh rivals with similar disdain, over 1 mile 2 furlongs and 88 yards as he had over a mile?
His owner, the much-missed Prince Khalid Abdulla was in town and, despite the desperate signs of his illness so was trainer, Sir Henry Cecil.
Those front row views of the pre parade have never filled so earlyit was an extraordinary sight.
Frankel faced a surprisingly large number of rivals as a field of nine went to post, the biggest challengers being St Nicholas Abbey, who had finished third in the King George at Ascot after winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom - one of three challengers from Ballydoyle, while two other stable mates of Frankel- his regular companion Bullet Train and Twice Over- who had won the race the previous year.
And there was Godolphin’s Farhh, whose rider Frankie Dettori observed wistfully “I’m sick of seeing the horse’s ar*e.
A few applauded as Frankel went to post, and a few gasped as the great horse missed the break and was settled in the rear by jockey Tom Queally as Bullet Train cut out the early running.
Turning for home, the crowd silence told its own story.
The hero remained near last; then Queally made his move down the
stands side- the race was over with a furlong to go- Frankel won by 7 lengths. No one moved as Queally brought the Champion in front of the stands.
And so to the Winners Enclosure - emotion almost tangible as the trainer removed his black fedora and walked forward to receive his prize as the call for “three cheers for ‘enry” was deafeningly responded to. Lord Grimthorpe, Frankel’s Racing Manager in his first season in his “other job” as York Chairman so was on hand when the Prince raised the trophy.
Speaking later, Teddy Grimthorpe joked when asked about Cecil’s health- ‘He’s in good spirits and devouring lobster’.
So, whether fifty years or a mere decade have slipped by, the memories of great champions remain fresh. It was a day, now over a decade ago that still lives in the memory. Not just the race, but what happened afterwards.
History repeating itself, in an interview reflecting on great racedays, a leading Newmarket Trainer said of August 2012 ‘The reception Sir Henry got that day is why I am such a proud Yorkshireman’
That trainer? William Haggas- who incidentally won in 2022 with another superstar, Baaeed.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Italy separated a couple of Godolphin runners when finishing a creditable second in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket That form should give Charlie Appleby a good handle on the chances of DISTANT STORM and the latter could prove the one to side with. The son of Night Of Thunder beat a couple of subsequent winners when making a winning debut in a hot maiden at Newmarket and can take this step up in class in his stride Goodwood Galaxy’s fourth in the Vintage Stakes can be marked up as he missed the break, while May Angel is another to note.

The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes plus £2,500 for the stable to share and a Christmas Party here at York in December.
The well supported Elmonjed moved William Haggas up the leaderboard.

GreatVoltigeurStakes FACT FILE:
WHERE DOES THE RACE NAME COME FROM?
Voltigeur was a famous Yorkshire-trained Classic winner who carried the colours of the Earl of Zetland, to victory in both the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger in 1850 The Flying Dutchman had also landed the Derby-St Leger double the previous year The so called “Great Match” between the pair was held at York the following spring, over two miles with £1,000 side stakes (a sum equivalent to £700,000 in today’s shops) and the Knavesmire was packed to bursting to see the Flying Dutchman win the money. Yet, in one of those quirks of history the battling Voltigeur won the hearts on the day and he is now remembered with this race, the 550 seat restaurant at York as well as being the horse featured in our logo
Distance
One mile and four furlongs (2,400 metres)
Prize money £250,000 (prior to supplementary)
WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT RACE?
It has long been the premier trial for the final Classic of the year and in five decades or more, the road to The Betfred St Leger fame has often started here on the Knavesmire. Continuous became the latest winner to achieve glory on Doncaster’s Town Moor, he became the 15th Great Voltigeur winner to do just that.
FIRST WINNER?
The Jack Jarvis-trained Castle Rock won the inaugural race in 1950 when ridden by Bill Rickaby.
ANY OTHER SUCCESSES?
In 2009 Mastery finished runner-up to Monitor Closely but reversed the placings in the Betfred St Leger Three year’s later Encke could only finish third here, but he broke the hearts of the racing public when he defeated the Triple Crown-seeking Camelot at Doncaster. It was a similar story in 2018 as the York third, Kew Gardens, turned the tables on Old Persian in the season’s final classic.
GLORY DOWN UNDER
The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter was second in this back in 2018. Some ten weeks and 10,500 miles later and the colt carried the Godolphin colours to triumph in the Lexus Melbourne Cup So becoming the first Britishtrained winner of the race that stops a nation. 2022 winner, Deauville Legend, started as favourite at Flemington, however could not emulate the feat.
A ROYAL HICCUP...
Alleged is arguably the best Sky Bet Great Voltigeur winner not to go on to score at Doncaster. Trained by Vincent O’Brien, he went to Doncaster unbeaten in five starts and was sent off a red hot favourite, but he was beaten by Dunfermline – owned by The Late HM The Queen and ridden by Willie Carson. That was Alleged’s only defeat and he later took his revenge in the Arc in Paris, a prize he also won the following year
OTHER CLASSIC HEROES?
Before Logician and Continuous’s success, Premonition won the new York race in 1953, and became the first to go on to triumph in the Betfred St Leger He was trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr and they did it again five years later with Alcide St Paddy, Hethersett, Ragusa and Indiana all did the double in a five year period during the 1960s, while Athens Wood and Bustino added to the score in the following decade. The mighty Reference Point took the Betfred Derby as well as these two races in his fantastic career Rule of Law carried the Godolphin blue to double victory in 2004 and Lucarno was another to do the double in 2007.
Sir Michael Stoute
LEADING TRAINERS?
Paddy Prendergast saddled five winners in the early years of the race, while the late Sir Henry Cecil was successful on four occasions. These totals have been surpassed by the recently retired Sir Michael Stoute - who won it seven times in his career including with Telescope in 2013. John Gosden also has a terrific record in the race, winning five of the last sixteen renewals, including that of 2019, though Clarehaven is not represented today. Aidan O’Brien, made it three wins in the past 10 years, with Los Angeles. He joined the likes of Continuous and Idaho, who did the business in 2016. Today it falls to Lambourn, Mount Kilimanjaro, Stay True and Thrice to extend that form. William Haggas lifted the trophy in 2015 and is today represented by Arabian Force, while the others would herald a debut victory
LEADING RIDER? WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
On an afternoon when racegoers can once again take a selfie with the statue of the “Long Fellow”, it is worth noting that Lester Piggott won the race on no less than nine occasions, while Frankie Dettori bowed out of British racing on seven victories. Of the current crop, Ryan Moore leads the way with three winners and today partners Lambourn.
HOW DO LOCAL TRAINERS FARE?
Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker
We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost.
We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have recently extended their partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of thirteen races this week; including the Sky Bet Ebor
Brioche was the first Yorkshiretrained winner when saddled for victory by Malton-based Captain Charles Elsey in 1957. But it was 45 years before we saw another Yorkshire horse score when Mark Johnston collected the prize with subsequent St Leger third, Bandari. The barren patch for the locals will continue for at least one more year

WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND
The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.
The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%.
You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
The prize money on offer at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners – sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.
For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.
For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Juddmonte International closed for original entries on July 1st.
However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners.
If you think about it terms of playing poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.
In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for both The Juddmonte International Stakes and The Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes have risen because of one supplementary entry in each race, with Birr Castle joining the Juddmonte and Arabian Force added to the Great Voltigeur.
Birr Castle has been competitive over the 1m2f trip in Group company when running out of the Andre Fabre yard in France. Team Godolphin have reached into their European operation in this interesting move.
Arabian Force finished just a nose behind Nahraan at Hamilton back in July. This represents a significant step up in class but if the William Haggas team think he’s good enough to make the jump then he can be given every chance in this years renewal.
The breakdown of the new prize pots can be seen below.

BIG RACE TRENDS
THE SKY BET GREAT VOLTIGEUR STAKES (GROUP 2)
PREVIOUS WINNERS - LAST TEN RUNNINGS
Year Winner Trainer Jockey
TRAINERS
Aidan O’Brien has the best record of those in recent years, he has four winners to his name, including three the previous two winners as well as Idaho in 2016. Charlie Appleby and Jogn Gosden also feature twice on the roll of honour in the previous ten years.
BETTING
Five of the last 10 to win the race were favourites, with only one horse winning at double figure odds in that time frame. There is a slight bias toward those at the front of the market. Therefore pay close attention to Lambourn.
RECENT FORM
A last time out victory is not the be all and end all when looking for that elusive winner as only three of the last thirteen winners of this race have arrived here on the back of a success last time out. However, a solid run on their latest start offers some encouragement with all but three of the last eleven winners having finished no worse than fourth on their most recent outing.
DISTANCE
Previously it had been the case that winning over 1m4f prior to the race hadn't been important. That has begun to change with Old Persian, Logician, Pyledriver, Yibir Deauville Legend and 2024 victor Los Angeles all previously winning over the trip. Therefore it could well pay to follow those with experience, last year's winner Continuous bucked this trend, with his only win coming over a mile prior to his wining run. Lambourn has already won over this distance while Carmers is proven over further as well.
WEIGHT
Every horse is initially allotted 9st 2lb (8st 12lb until 2014) before penalties are given for previous wins at Group 1 or Group 2 level this season. Only four winners of the race have carried such penalties to victory since 1995. Los Angeles became the latest to manage that feat last year, can Lambourn, Carmers or Pride Of Arras do the same this year?
KEY TRENDS
Finished in first four last time
Single-figure odds
Win over 1m4f
CONCLUSION
While the record of those carrying penalties isn't great, Los Angeles did successfully do it last year and it might be wise to side with one of those carrying a penalty this year. LAMBOURN ticks almost every other box and is hard to look beyond for a trainer that has won this race the previous two years. He's proven over the distance and will be hard to stop for the hattrick seeking Ryan Moore. Carmers proven form over further makes him an obvious threat and although he has won all three of his starts, that isn't necessarily the be all or end all when it comes to the trends for this race. The supplemented Arabian Force will need to take his form up a notch, while the unexposed Stay True may benefit from not carrying any penalties.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Aidan O’Brien has won the last two renewals and LAMBOURN looks set to retain the prize for the Ballydoyle handler The Derby winner was less impressive when landing the Irish equivalent at the Curragh, but will be fresher for this and is difficult to oppose, despite a 5lb penalty. Pride Of Arras has been gelded after a couple of poor displays behind the selection. He won the Dante on the Knavesmire in fine style back in May and could launch a challenge if returning to that level, while the progressive Carmers won the Queen’s Vase at Ascot and is preferred to Arabian Force.

JUDDMONTE BLOODSTOCK EROES H
Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York.
The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.
Coming up to date and Juddmonte Farms, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms was set up by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, who sadly passed in 2021.
On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Frankel will feel a weight of expectation on their withers. The colt formerly trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed his finest hour at York when landing the Juddmonte International for his connections in 2012 to take his unbeaten record to thirteen.
Frankel’s stallion career continues to go from strength to strength, the fastest sire to a century of Group winners in history, in 2023 he was responsible for 42 individual stakes winners and eleven Group One winners, more than any other Northern Hemisphere-based stallion. Last year, in 2024, he sired 18 individual stakes winners and 11 Group Winners. In total, he has sired 38 Group One winners, including this year’s Irish 1000 Guineas winner Lake Victoria and dual Oaks winner Minnie Hauk.
Based at Banstead Manor, the success of this operation can be seen with Oasis Dream, a Champion at both two and three. His three Group 1 victories included a devastating turn of foot in the 2003 Coolmore Nunthorpe where he made all, quickening close home to win by two and a half lengths. In the breeding shed he has
also enjoyed plenty of success, including 2022 Champion Two Year Old, Native Trail, amongst the winners of 30 Group One races. Only Dubawi and Frankel have sired more Group 1 winners and Group winners amongst active sires in Britain. The most famous of his offspring is probably classy filly Midday who landed six top-level victories during her career, including two notable successes here on the Knavesmire - the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks - as well as being narrowly denied in the Juddmonte International by stablemate Twice Over. Another of Oasis Dream’s sons, Muhaarar, continued the York connection. The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack winner subsequently added four Group 1s in 2015, en-route to being crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and is now producing his own speedy sons and daughters.
Another smash hit in the bloodstock world has been Juddmonte’s exceptional miler, Kingman - a winner of seven of his eight starts, including four Group 1 victories, the son of Invincible Spirit has already produced 60 Group winners and a further 39 Stakes winners. They include Kinross, Palace Pier, Calyx, Headman, Commissioning, Domestic Spending, 2024 1000 Guineas winner Elmaka and Prix de Diane winner Sparkling Plenty, along with being the sire of Field of Gold, 2025 Irish 2000 Guineas and Gr.1 St James’s Palace winner. He was the joint leading sire by Northern Hemisphere-bred Gorup 1 winning three-year-olds in 2024 with Galileo and Justify.
What is evident is the strength in depth that Juddmonte possess. The quality for Frankel, Oasis Dream, Kingman and latest roster hit, Chaldean, coupled with the passion and knowledge passed down from the organisation’s much-missed founder, they look set to be sat at the top table for a few generations yet.

The Juddmonte International was devised by Major Leslie Petch, a former Clerk of the Course at York but he had stepped down from his position due to ill health before the inaugural race was staged.
IS IT AN INTERNATIONAL RACE?
Oh yes - it certainly lives up to its international billing. Fourteen of the 52 renewals have been won by horses trained overseas. Ireland leads the way with 10 victories followed by France with 3 and Italy with 1. Maurice Zilber, the trainer of the 1974 & 1975 winner Dahlia, was born and raised in Cairo where he trained horses from 1946 to 1962 before moving to Chantilly where he worked for further 43 years. France have their own strong contender, with the unbeaten Daryz as the sole entrant. Running in the colours of The late Aga Khan who won the race in 1986 with Shardari and had the narrow runner-up in 2000 with Kalanisi. The last Frenchtrained winner of the International was Triptych for Patrick Biancone in 1987. Last year Durezza represented Japan, while in the 2005 renewal, Japanese trained ace, Zenno Rob Roy, finished a close second to subsequent Dubai World Cup winner, Electrocutionist, a colt trained in Italy This year, Japan is again represented, with Danon Decile hoping to go one better
IS AGE IMPORTANT?
Since the Juddmonte International was first run in 1972, it has been won by 18 three-year-olds, 23 four-year-olds, 11 five-year-olds and only 1 six-year-old, so the stats, as well as the betting market, are in favour of three and four-year-olds.
FIRST WINNER?
The inaugural running of the Juddmonte International in 1972 produced a contest that has gone down in racing legend. Brigadier Gerard was to suffer his only defeat in 18 career starts when headed by that year’s Derby winner, Roberto.
THE LUCK OF THE O’BRIENS?
The very first renewal was won by the Vincent O’Brien-trained Roberto and he added a second in 1983 with Caerleon, a year after David O’Brien won the race with Assert. After a barren spell, Aidan O’Brien got them back on track when Giant’s Causeway won in 2000; the first of his seven winners - Duke Of Marmalade, Rip Van Winkle, Declaration Of War, Australia, Japan and last year’s champion, City Of Troy. John Oxx’s Sea The Stars (Sire of Baaeed) added to Irish success in the race having won in 2009 Aidan O’Brien has market leader Delacroix, who could take him to eight winners.
City Of Troy
Sir Michael Stoute
LEADING TRAINERS?
The most successful trainers in the history of the Juddmonte International are the recently retired Sir Michael Stoute, who won the race six times courtesy of Shardari (1986), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994), Singspiel (1997), Notnowcato (2006) and Ulysses (2017). Aidan O’Brien (winners on previous page) recorded his seventh win last year courtesy of City Of Troy Delacroix will look to add to that today. It would be third winner in a decade for Clarehaven were Ombudsman to follow Roaring Lion (2015) and Mostahdaf (2023) for the Gosdens. The others would all be breaking their maiden tag today.
LEADING RIDER?
For a long time, the most successful jockey in the history of the Juddmonte International was the much missed Lester Piggott, who recorded five wins. Piggott tasted success with Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Hawaiian Sound (1978), Commanche Run (1985) and Rodrigo de Triano (1992). However, Frankie Dettori ended things on a high when getting to six, after taking last year’s renewal aboard Mostahdaf His other wins came courtesy of Halling (1996), Singspiel (1997), Sakhee (2001), Sulamani (2004) and Authorized (2007). Ryan Moore aboard Delacroix seeks a third triumph today.
ANY DUAL WINNERS?
The most successful horses in the history of the Juddmonte International are Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994) and Halling (1995 & 1996).
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Established in 1977, Juddmonte was founded by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah and consists of three stud farms in England, two in Ireland, and three in Kentucky, USA.
The Prince won back-to-back renewals of this race in 2011 & 2012 with Twice Over & Frankel.
This afternoon marks the thirty-sixth time the race has enjoyed their generous support.
FACTS?
The shortest-priced winner of the Juddmonte International was the legendary Frankel who blitzed his rivals in 2012 when sent off at 1/10 In victory he set a new record for winning eight European Group 1 races in a row.
In 2008 an unbelievably wet summer resulted in the Ebor Festival being abandoned. The Juddmonte International was re-routed to Newmarket, the only time the race has been staged away from York. The rescheduled race, was won by Duke Of Marmalade
See The Fire was literally bred for success here as both mum (Arabian Queen) and Dad (Sea the Stars) won the race

AGE
City Of Troy moved the classic generation into a narrow lead with five wins, one clear of the four-year-olds who sit on four wins. Five-year-olds hold the remaining spots on the roll of honour with three winners (Postponed, 2016, Ghaiyyath, 2020 & Mostahdaf 2023).
DISTANCE
Only the great Frankel in 2012, the 2018 winner Roaring Lion, Rodrigo de Triano in 1992 and 2022 superstar Baaeed have successfully managed to step up in trip and win the Juddmonte International. In 2013, Declaration Of War stepped up from winning over a mile at Ascot but had already proved himself more than capable over 10 furlongs earlier in his career, whilst Arabian Queen had finished third in the Nassau Stakes over ten furlongs prior to winning here. You need a special one to buck the distance trend first time out!
PROVEN AT THE TOP LEVEL
Unsurprisingly for a race of this quality, the last ten renewals have been dominated by regular Group 1 performers, with only 2011’s victor Twice Over having not contested a top level race on his most recent outing If we look a bit closer, we see eleven of the last twelve winners had at least one group win. Delacroix, Ombudsman and Danon Decile have all won a Group One, while only Birr Castle has failed to win in Group company.
CONCLUSION
RECENT FORM
Following on from being proven at the top level, it's been a good tactic to oppose any runners without a victory to their name this season, regardless of whether they ran well in defeat. Only Sulamani in 2004 and Roaring Lion in 2018 have won the Juddmonte International in recent seasons having not won a race earlier in the calendar. 2021 winner Mishriff had no domestic victory to his name but had recorded victories in Meydan and Saudi Arabia. Only Birr Castle has failed tow in this season, whilst Ombudsman and See The Fire both failed to win on their previous start.
TRAINERS
Sir Michael Stoute is the joint-most successful trainer in the race’s history with six victories but after his retirement, it falls to Aidan O’Brien, who will be hoping to move ahead with Delcroix carrying his banner this afternoon.
BETTING
Arabian Queen’s victory at odds of 50/1 in 2015 certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons but on the whole, the Juddmonte International isn’t really a race for shocks. Prior to that you have to go back to Ezzoud’s success at 28/1 way back in 1993 to find the only other big-priced winner. Favourites have a decent record here having won five of the last ten renewals, while all bar one of the last ten have been priced at single figures.
KEY TRENDS
Placed or better in Group 1 last time

Favourite
DELACROIX comes into the race having won all bar one race this season, when he was well beaten in the Betfred Epsom Derby. He's racked up two Group Ones already this season, including when proving himself over 10 furlongs at Sandown. He's a brilliant mix of speed and stamina and it's hard to look past the favourite His biggest threat will likely come in the form of Ombudsman, who represents the four-year-olds. He was only narrowly beaten at Sandown Park and this is an intriguing rematch. Danon Decile looks to be a worthy Japanese contender. Unbeaten this season, he is proven over the trip and ticks all the right boxes.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
This year’s renewal might be short on numbers but there is no doubting the quality on show, and OMBUDSMAN is fancied to get his revenge having been touched off by Delacroix in the Eclipse last month. Although arguably worth more than the winning margin would suggest that day, the Gosdens’ colt is now 3lb better off. His Prince Of Wales’ triumph still lives fresh in the memory and if returning to that level of form, he could prove a tough nut to crack. Japanese raider Danon Decile was last seen defeating the classy Calandagan in the Sheema Classic so he merits plenty of respect, while the unbeaten Daryz can’t be overlooked either

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Last year’s Cesarewitch hero Alphonse Le Grande wasn’t beaten far into eight in the Ascot Stakes last time out and is entitled to plenty of respect from an unchanged mark, as is Dancing In Paris, who hit the woodwork in a similar contest at Goodwood latest That being said, a chance can be taken on TERRORISE. This is undoubtedly tougher than last month’s C&D triumph, especially now 8lb higher However, he is completely unexposed over staying trips on the Flat and may have much more in the locker

KNAVESMIRE TIP
SARAHMAE travels over from Ireland after a comfortable victory at the Curragh recently and although she has a lot more to do here, a fast-run five furlongs could see her finishing her race better than most. Luna A Inbhir Nis won here at the end of July when holding on narrowly to score by a neck but she has 5lb more here in better company which makes her task more difficult, so Galaxy Zoo is preferred as the main threat after coming from off the pace to win comfortably at Ascot.

Getting the hang of handicaps? This time it’s two-year-olds only, going three quarters of a mile in distance, with First Legion having the big burden.
By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record. Pedigree is the second, more professional option, as a “p”.
Good luck in picking a winner with the knowledge that victory in this race means you can remain unbeaten until at least 1.52pm tomorrow!
