Welcome A very warm welcome to YorkMix Family Sunday with a significant prize fund of £230,000 on offer for our seven thoroughbred races with the feature race being the £70,000 Listed Starman at Tally Ho Stud Garrowby Stakes, at 3.50pm. It is a very special raceday for all the generations at York Racecourse, full of racing Shetlands, racing ponies, thoroughbred racehorses, mechanical racehorses, retired racehorses, gerbils, snakes, lizards and one very famous forest-dweller! I hope you and your family thoroughly enjoy your day. In terms of the attractions on offer today, I hope you can find time to visit the Racing Interactive Zone, circus skills or see The Gruffalo, all set in the picturesque surroundings of the new Bustardthorpe Development, so under the Churchill Tyes Canopy. There is yet more entertainment based in the middle of the course; zorb football, giant inflatables and Diggerland, are just part of the fun and entirely free. For more details of all the extra entertainment today see pages 6-7. A tip for County Stand Badgeholders is to watch the action from the Dante Suite on the second floor of the Ebor Stand; it has viewing seats as well as a bar, tote, toilets and more seating inside. A further tip for all racegoers in the middle of the course – do come over to stand side and enjoy seeing the horses in the Parade Ring and all that is on offer in the wider stands and lawns – just cross by the thatched head on box (please leave your picnic in the left luggage facility). There are over one hundred declared runners vying for the honours, amongst them we have some top-class horses and jockeys racing, made possible by both your support and the backing of our partners and sponsors. As always, our thanks to today’s sponsors, David & Sue Ward, the European Breeders’ Fund, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Eboracum Security, Hanson Springs, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Cooper Marquees and The Saltmoore Collection. The record value of our feature race has been rewarded with an interesting field of nine top-quality sprinters. Locally trained, Regional, gave trainer Ed Bethell a seat at the Group 1 table when winning at Haydock back in 2023. At the other end of the experience scale sits, Behike, aged three, who won a Listed race in France for George Scott and the Amo Racing team. Prior to the thoroughbred racing we are proud to host two very special contests, our first ever Shetland race, followed by a leg of the Pony Racing Series, sponsored by Dragon Film Studios. York is delighted to welcome these various ponies, young jockeys and their connections to the Knavesmire - who knows maybe they will return one day as professional pilots. The Bowen brothers, Hollie Doyle, Sam Twiston-Davis and Tom Marquand are among previous graduates from these races. You can bet on the outcome of the second race and I hope that you will enjoy the extra sport. It gives us particular pleasure to welcome Bob Champion CBE, Grand National winning jockey and legendary fundraiser, as well as prominent supporter of the Shetland Pony Grand National. Taking his 36th spin down the Knavesmire in our second race, is Copper Knight, already the winningmost horse of modern times, will he make it victory number eight this afternoon, for the Denham Family and Tim Easterby?. Today follows just after a special week for our sport, National Racehorse Week. I do hope some of you took advantage of the combined admission offer and visited the racing stables around Malton earlier today. Our equine ambassador, Remy, is here so do go and say hello to him whilst discovering the fabulous work of New Beginnings. Remy and his friend Poppy the pony will be making more community visits into the autumn. With the leaves beginning to turn, remember you can follow all the action from major Flat racecourses, such as York as well as the big Jumps meetings at the likes of Cheltenham and Aintree, all on Racing TV. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 13

NEW HEDGE As part of Green Knavesmire 300 we planted two miles of hedge around the eastern boundary including the six & seven furlong starts to improve landscaping and support wildlife. As they grow the blend of hawthorn, hornbeam, hazel, prunus and field maple plants will become more obvious.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent.
The following terms will provide any newcomer, keen to enhance their language skills, with just enough of the jargon to sound like a ‘local’: RACING SPEAK
ENGLISH
ALLOWANCE: .......................The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience. AMATEUR: .............................(Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. To indicate their amateur licence holder status. ANTE-POST: ..........................Betting (usually for the most important races) days or even months before the race is due to take place. APPRENTICE:........................Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning. BACKWARD: .........................Young horse which needs time to mature. CLERK OF THE COURSE:...Official in charge of running the racing operations. At York it is Anthea Leigh on racedays. John Morley is the Assistant Clerk Of The Course today. CLERK OF THE SCALES:......Key in the delivery of a successful racing operation. Karl Curran are in charge of things today. COLOURS:..............................The racing silks worn by the jockeys. COLT: ......................................Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old. CONNECTIONS:....................The owner and trainer of a racehorse. COURSE SPECIALIST:..............Horse which tends to run well at a particular course. DAM:........................................Mother of a horse. DISTANCE: .............................The length of a race. DISTANCE, THE: ...................An unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post. DRAW: ....................................Describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn two days before a flat race. EACH-WAY: ...........................A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. FILLY: ......................................Female horse up to four years old. FOAL:......................................Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year. FORECAST: ...........................Name the first and second in the correct order. FURLONG: .............................220 yards (one eighth of a mile). GELDING:...............................Castrated horse. GOING: ...................................Description of the course conditions under foot. HAND:.....................................Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder. TRIFECTA:..............................The premise of a Tote Trifecta is to back the three horses who finish first, second and third in the race of your choice. We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there accessible and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception. As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. We are now registered with the Access Card (nimbus) scheme which helps with advance booking. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. Can I bring my assistance dog? Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing? Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION We start the day off with a very valuable maiden contest meaning this race is limited to 2yo horses who are yet to win, it is over the distance seven furlongs (there are eight furlongs in a mile.) The boys (colts) start with a higher basic weight than the girls (fillies) which explains the lighter burden for Nice Neasy Does It, as the lone female. Any that have had a win already this season would have to carry additional (so called penalty) weight, however this year it is level pegging for the boys. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Perhaps the advice of our expert panel on the Winner’s Podium at 1pm will give you the answer.

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP? FINE DETAILS CAR VALETING SPRINT HANDICAP STAKES This afternoon’s Sprint Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a fiercely competitive field of 22 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or a meaningful name may produce the winner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner. Narrowing down the field of 22 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form. Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Utmost Respect - rated 79 - is considered 1lb “better” than Kinnalargy who is rated 78. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Utmost Respect should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 22 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race? Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find! Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!
1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form and those arriving on the back of a positive performance last time out, especially in such a competitive contest. The likes of recent Newcastle winner Harb and Pontefract second Havana Rum fit that bill. 2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand. The likes of Call To Action, Curious Rover and Vingegaard could use this to their advantage in that their jockeys can see rivals both left and right. 3) DISTANCE Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this five-and-ahalf-furlong trip where speed is necessary. There are a number to have already won over this trip, these include: Kinnalargy, Call To Action, Little Mi Mi and Roach Power. 4) GROUND The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Oriental Prince and Kanishka will enjoy a quicker surface whilst Vingegaard has victories on both quicker and softer surfaces. Today’s conditions are likely to be on the slightly slower side but make sure to check the ground description. 5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists. There are three course and distance winners amongst today’s field – Explosive Finnish, Copper Knight and Duran. 6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Call To Action appeals most, arriving here on the back of strong second at Beverley last time out. His form on similar ground is solid and he’s been given a perfect draw in six. Copper Knight must enter calculations as the winning most horse on the knavesmire however he will have to overcome a tricky draw from one. Explosive Finnish rounds off the shortlist having been a course and distance winner last time out. He won’t have any difficulty coping with softer conditions however is now running from a career high mark. 37

RACE DESCRIPTION Now for the first handicap of the day, designed for close competition, the handicapper is an independent assessor who rates horses on their past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. Not all horses like running over the same distance and generally they improve with experience; so, to add a further competitive edge, this race is for 3yo and older horses only, over the unusual distance of five and a half furlongs. Baby-Changing facilities are available in a purpose-built facility on the ground floors of both Knavesmire & Ebor stands, as well a signed area in the Clocktower Enclosure close to the turnstiles. There is a wide range of many food and drink options for families and children. From fish ‘n’ chips in the new Roberto Pavilion. To an extensive sandwich selection and lasagne and chips in the County Stand at Eat Between Our Races. We welcome children in our main restaurants, and in the Gimcrack Restaurant we offer a half price option for under 12s covering both lunch and afternoon tea. Wherever you can buy food we also can provide juice for children, with water available from all the bars. Our Parent and Toddler room, situated by the entry to the Melrose Stand lifts, allows parents and children some quiet time away from the hurly burly of the main raceday atmosphere. A microwave is provided for parents to warm children’s bottles and televisions provide coverage of racing whilst another shows cartoons. Some comfy chairs should help recharge the batteries.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our richest race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land. Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is sharpened by the nuance that horses who have won this season in the top two divisions are excluded. Horses of the same age and sex start with the same weight, meaning Lam Yai starts with the lowest amount being the only 3yo filly. You can see that difference between an older male contender such as Regional and a male opponent aged just three, like Extremely Zain. The top weights, Behike & Dickensian, carry an additional burden for winning a Listed race win in France/here earlier in the season. KNAVESMIRE TIP It’s easy to make a case for many of these, but perhaps none more so than the Richard Hughes-trained AMERICA QUEEN. Following a creditable fourth in a Group 3 over C&D, she powered clear to record a commanding win at Pontefract and can continue her progress back on the Knavesmire. Double Rush’s winning run came to an end in the July Cup but he’s a real player with his sights lowered, and don’t give up on Extremely Zain just yet because it wasn’t a bad effort in the Hungerford.

Abandoned Racing
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances. a) before the first race - 100% refund. b) before the completion of three races - 50% refund. c) thereafter - no refund applies. The terms of the insurance scheme which racegoers had the option to purchase at time of booking shall apply. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days. Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. A similar process will apply for those who paid in advance by cheque. Alcohol And Public Order
The Racecourse takes its responsibilities under Licensing Laws very seriously and puts in place training and measures to exceed these obligations. Racegoers are urged to drink responsibly. Alcohol cannot be brought into the stands side enclosures. York Racecourse reserves the right to expel any person found to be drunk or behaving in a disorderly manner. The “Challenge 25” initiative will be in operation to ensure that only those aged 18 and over are served with alcohol. Thank you for your support of this obligation.
Cameras
Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:1. Kindly refrain from flash photography. 2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room. 3. Respect the privacy of others.
Cigarettes and e-cigarettes
The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.
Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions
All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. Dogs
Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.
HBLB
The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prize money for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry
First Aid
There are first aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required.
Dress Standards
Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Consistent with the relaxed nature of our only Sunday, the formal aspects of the County Stand dress code have also been relaxed. It has always been the case that shorts and t-shirts have been welcome in Grandstand and Paddock. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.
Drugs
A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.
Litter
Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.
Noise
So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of flags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.
Parade Ring
For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.
Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections
In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.
Radios and Mobile Telephones
The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.
Track Safety
For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staff please keep off the track. Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban. 77
