A very warm welcome to a day of both speed and endurance at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. The race programme features both the fastest race of our season – the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe, as well as our richest staying race – the Group 2 Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup The Coolmore Wotton Bassett Nunthorpe is part of the “win and you’re in” Breeders Cup Challenge Series for the Turf Sprint.
The feature sprint puts a spotlight on some of the quickest horses; battling it out for a prize fund of £697,500 It is a race run in under a minute, so take your place, hold your breath and enjoy. A fascinating and rare aspect is that horses in the very first year of racing can take on their elders, at the highest level. The juveniles are compensated by a reduction in weight and yet more if they are fillies, to put that in numbers, Spicy Marg carries 8 stone 2lb being nigh on two stone less than Night Raider, yet both are about the same price with the bookies at 11/1. Trained in the state of Victoria, Asfoora, is spending her summer over here running in some of Britain’s big sprint races so festival sponsors, Sky Bet, have decided a single figure price fits the Aussie visitor after her fourth-place last season.
A little earlier in the day and it’ll be the turn of the leading juveniles to contest the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes (In honour of Tom Lacy) it will tell us which connections are to address the 254th Gimcrack Dinner in December.
Operating at the other end of both trip and experience is the former Sky Bet Ebor champion, the Charlie Appleby trained, Trawlerman, who faces five rivals in the longest race of the week, the Group 2 Weatherbys Cup The Yorkshire contender is Al Qareem who has won on the Knavesmire twice already this season for the Karl Burke team.
If that wasn’t enough, we have the richest maiden race in the land, one of twenty-three York contests to receive the generous backing of the European Breeders’ Fund, notepads and Ipads at the ready come 4.45pm, a star may well be revealed.
Today has been billed as the most jockey-centric race day ever seen on a British racecourse, when jockeys will be involved in a raft of novel activities with the aim of engaging, entertaining and educating racegoers and TV viewers. Amongst the activities to look out for, are riders wearing their surnames on the back of their breeches, look for pictures in this racecard of their younger selves, do visit the autograph signing sessions with leading riders and discover their choice of music tracks on our social media channels. The “World Pool Moment of the Day”, is an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £4,000 The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year”
In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the Grantley Hall Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room. Partners such as Grantley Hall themselves, The 8th Sign, the Bothy and the Hole in Wand are offering great prizes for all you stylish racegoers, plus it is great fun!
Visit our equine ambassador, Goldream, the retired racehorse in Clocktower Enclosure, listen out for the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dance into the evening with The Monotones, share a bottle of Gardet Origine champagne for just £46.50 a bottle, enjoy the 360-selfie camera or taking your own selfie at the flower wall; whatever, it is just our pleasure to welcome you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival.

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?
CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table
BUSTARDTHORPE END
SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT
Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop
MR MOWITALL
Joining the grounds team over winter were a trio of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself
THE TEAM NEVER REST
Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).
A LIVING FLOWER WALL
OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND
The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE
BARS HAVE IT
Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie
NEW ON THE MENU
Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.
If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.
Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

It could be easy to be put off by the weird and wonderful words and phrases banded around the racecourse, but in fact, its all part of the fun.
Like a tourist in a foreign country, the novice racegoer soon picks up enough of the language to get by, and then rapidly becomes fluent.
The following terms will provide any newcomer, keen to enhance their language skills, with just enough of the jargon to sound like a ‘local’:

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.
Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside
UNDER JOCKEYS ORDERS
Following on from the success of this initiative last year, we will be celebrating jockeys across the week of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. With a focus on their role in racing, bringing their personalities to life and bringing the public closer to the human athletes at the centre of our sport.
York Racecourse have worked in partnership with the PJA and GBR to deliver the following:
• Jockeys will be easy to identify as they’ll be wearing their surnames on the back of their breeches, much like Premier League football players in selected races.
• Jockey Showcase - keep an eye on the big screens as we celebrate the jockeys ahead of the feature race.
• Horsewalk to catwalk, check our Social Media to learn which of the jockeys embrace their own style ahead of Ladies Day when coming to the track?
• The musical tastes of the top riders will also be explored on our Social Media with the top ‘disc’ jockeys revealing their favoured tunes as they drive to the races.
• Autograph Sessions today and every day this week.
• Look out for the “off to a good start” images of today’s riders in their earlier years on horseback.
• Clifton Green Primary school quizzed the pilots, see what they said on our social media channels.
YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE SKY BET LOWTHER (GROUP 2)
Day two kicked off with a cracking renewal of the Sky Bet Lowther, that saw Ed Walker retain the race with Royal Fixation.
The Opulence Thoroughbreds owned juvenile had produced an excellent effort last time out when chasing home the very talented Venetian Sun.
The race began with the eventual winner anchored in rear by William Buick, as Argentine Tango cut out the early running The field remained bunched in the early stages, with the pace looking to be a steady one.
Upon reaching the two furlong pole, the field began to mount their challenges as Royal Fixation was switched out to make her challenge. Ryan Moore opted to instead hug the rail, finding a nice gap when he needed it to take the lead Inside the final furlong.
The Ed Walker filly however would not go down without a fight and continued to pull out more to join American Queen inside the final hundred yards.
As the line approached the daughter of Palace Pier showed that little bit of extra class to come home the winner by a length.
America Queen ran an admirable race in second while Staya and Callum Shepherd found plenty of trouble in running and were forced to settle for third place.
THE PERTEMPS NETWORK YORKSHIRE OAKS (GROUP 1)
Despite only four going to post, we were still treated to a special performance by Minnie Hauk, who delivered Aidan O’Brien his fifth winner in the last six years.
As expected, Garden Of Eden set out to make the running under Wayne Lordan, with the pair moving into a solo lead. Qilin Queen sat second for Sky Bet Lowther winning trainer Ed Walker, with Estrange and Minnie Hauk held up in the rear
Despite being spread out, they looked to be travelling well as they went through the first half of the race, with the order remaining unchanged.
At the three furlong pole, the field began to stack up, with Garden Of Eden feeling the effects of her early exertions. Qilin Queen couldn’t throw down a sustained challenge and instead it was left to Estrange and Minnie Hauk to fight it out.
The Ballydoyle filly had first run on her rival and always looked to be travelling slightly better than her North Yorkshire based counterpart
Try as she might, Estrange could not bridge the gap and Minnie Hauk came home a ready winner by three-and-a-half-lengths, adding to her dual national Oaks titles.
Estrange ran a more than admirable race in second and looks likely to appreciate a softer surface next time out

Race Type: Heritage Handicap
Prize Money: £120,000
Age: 3+
Stalls: Centre
A competitive Heritage handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over a mile and a half.
Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best will be the highest rated, Mount Atlas, here today, so will carry more weight.
Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Chillingham is one to show both

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Trainer Roger Varian has won two of the last nine runnings and he relies on French Duke, who finished down the field over further at Goodwood last time out. He can go well on his third start after being gelded, but top-weight MOUNT ATLAS is preferred. A winner at Ascot last month when coming from off the pace with a well-timed run, an added 5lb may not stop him following up under Oisin Murphy. Doncaster second Marhaba The Champ has won here twice, including this prize in 2023, and could hit the frame at a massive price.

TheWeatherbys Lonsdale Cup FACT
FILE:
RACE HISTORY?
Distance
Two miles (3,200m)
Prize money £250,000
The race started life as a Listed contest and was called the Lonsdale Stakes, run over 1m7f198y It was promoted to Group 3 level in 1998, before being renamed the Lonsdale Cup and given Group 2 status in 2004. The distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.
LUCK OF THE IRISH?
Since 1980, apart from Willie Mullins who won the race last year with Vauban and Max Dynamite in 2015, only Aidan O’Brien (2007) and Dermot Weld (2014) have won this race
SALUTING THE CROWD?
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
The very best stayers in Europe have their season geared around “the Cup Races” of which the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup features strongly With Classic and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winners amongst its roll of honour, it is a race that is right up there with the best of them.
WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL?
That honour befalls six horses who have each won the race twice - Further Flight (1992 & 1993), Double Eclipse (1995 & 1997), Celeric (1996 &1999), Persian Punch (1998 & 2001), Opinion Poll (2010 & 2011) & Stradivarius (2018, 2019, 2021).
Whilst he may not have been the highest rated, the much missed Sergeant Cecil was certainly a favourite with the Knavesmire crowds where he won four times from seven starts. He landed this prize in 2006 before following up in the following month’s Doncaster Cup, which was run here due to redevelopments on Town Moor His other victories here included the Sky Bet Ebor in 2005 and the 2007 Boodles Yorkshire Cup. Sergeant Cecil
John Dunlop
LEADING TRAINERS?
John Dunlop holds the record with five victories. Mark Johnston and David Elsworth have both won the race three times. John Gosden, saddled Stradivarius to win three renewals and in between his success, he won the race with Enbihaar in 2020 He now only sits one behind record holder John Dunlop, will Trawlerman or Sweet William tie them up?
LEADING RIDER?
Frankie Dettori surpassed Pat Eddery’s mark of five in 2019 thanks to Stradivarius. The pair then went one better in 2021 but his retirement from British racing leaves the door open for a new name to chase the pair down. The closest is William Buick with a chance for Trawlerman to take him to three victories after Times Up back in 2012 and Vauban last year.
WHAT AGE GROUP HAS THE BEST RECORD?
Since 1980 four-year-olds lead the way having won the race 13 times. Five-year-olds are next best, with nine victories, while three-year-olds have seven and six-year-olds have seven. Stradivarius (and Fujaira Prince & The Grand Visir) became the first seven-year-old to win this since Sergeant Cecil in 2006. The great Persian Punch being the other in 2001.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
If you read your racecard carefully, you may have noticed that Weatherbys are the team behind this racecard and those at thousands of other race meetings.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
The recently stepped back from licence-holding Mark Johnston has been a leading light for the White Rose county having won the race three times. Double Eclipse won the race twice in 1995 & 1997 with his dual Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winner Royal Rebel adding the third in 2000. Tim Easterby has also been successful when his St Leger winner Bollin Eric landed the honours in 2003. Al Qareem (Karl Burke) is the home county representative.

Race preview from Weatherbys
It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes at York this afternoon, a Group 2 event staged over an extendedtwomiles.
Despite carrying a Group 1 penalty, the Godolphin-owned Trawlerman no doubt sets the standard here.
John and Thady Gosden’s sevenyear-old returned to UK shores with a comfortable Group 3 success and built on that effort when a wildly impressive winner of the Group 1 Gold CupatRoyalAscot.Underanexquisite William Buick ride, the son of Golden Horn dictated matters out in front, beforesurgingclearinemphaticstyle toaseven-lengthsuccess.Hehadtwo of these well behind that day, and a repeatoftheperformancewillseehim enterthewinners’enclosureagain.
DubaiFuturealsosportsthebluesilks of Godolphin for Saaed bin Suroor and the nine-year-old finished third at the Royal Meeting, albeit a distant four lengths behind the hot favourite. The nine-year-old was in terrific form in Dubai over the winter, winning the lucrative Dubai Gold Cup, but must bounce back to that form following a belowpareffortintheGoodwoodCup.
The Gosden team saddle Sweet William here, disappointing when fourth in the Gold Cup but bouncing rightbacktohisusualconsistentform when a good third in the Goodwood Cup last time. The six-year-old was a winner at this level last year at Doncaster and holds strong course form at York, having finished runnerup in the 2023 Ebor and returning this season with a close third in the Yorkshire Cup behind globetrotting sensationRebel’sRomance.
Aidan O’Brien landed the Goodwood Cup prize with unexposed threeyear-old Scandinavia and looks to accomplish a similar feat with agemate Shackleton here. AGE
Although three-year-olds are eligible for the Lonsdale Cup, the Classic generation easily have the worst record in the race, so hardly a shock that this year it is just Shackleton declared. When it comes to positives, the most successful age group are the five-year-olds however none were declared for this years renewal.
TRAINER
John Gosden has won this three times thanks to Stradivarius in 2018 and '19, while Enbihaar continued his golden streak in 2021 Trawlerman and Sweet William fly the Clarehaven flag today.
BETTING
Montaly triumphed in 2017 at odds of 16/1 and whilst Millenary (12/1) and Times Up (11/1) have also provided small shocks, they have proved the exception rather than the rule as those towards the head of the market. There have been five winning favourites in the last ten renewals and the average winning SP during the same time is around 5/1.
RECENT FORM
Stayers tend to mature as the season goes on and therefore it isn’t completely surprising to note that only four recent winners of this race had been successful on their previous start However, only one of the last ten winners of this race had not achieved a top four finish last time which suggests that it is the form horses coming into the race that are the group to focus on. This doesn't bode well for Dubai Future.
CLASS
Opinion Poll, Pale Mimosa, Max Dynamite and, most recently, Montaly all went on to win the Lonsdale Cup having not contested a Group race on their most recent start, but on the whole these are exceptional in that respect. Every other winner contested either a Group 1 or 2 contest on their previous outing, including last year's winner, Vauban.
KEY TRENDS
Finished in the first four last time out
Contested a Group 1 or 2 on their latest outing
Focus on those towards the head of the betting
CONCLUSION
The fine record of Clarehaven makes Sweet William and the pick of the trends TRAWLERMAN hard to look beyond in this year's renewal. The former represents the six-year-olds, who have won four of the previous ten renewals and will be partnered by Robert Havlin. Trawlerman marginally gets the nod because of the fine record of favourites in the last ten years, with four getting the job done. He was a Group One winner last time out and brings plenty of quality form to the race. Sole three-year-old Shackleton looks to have his work cut out for him if going off the poor record of the classic generation. While two-time York winner Al Qareem steps up in trip but he only contested a Group Three last time out, which would be a slight negative against his name.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
TRAWLERMAN arrives on the back of wins in the Henry II at Sandown and the Gold Cup at Ascot by seven lengths from the classy Illinois. Despite carrying a Group 1 penalty for the latter success, the former Ebor hero should prove a tough nut to crack once again. Shackleton gets a stone from his older rival as a three-year-old and the Irish Derby eighth has to be of interest at these weights, while Al Qareem is hard to ignore in his hunt for a hat-trick on the Knavesmire.

TRAINER
Of those with runners this year, Kevin Ryan has the best record having won the race four times, courtesy of Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), Astaire (2013) and most recently Emaraaty Ana in 2018 He has one live chance today in Rock Of Thunder.
RECENT FORM
A last time out victory is not essential with six of the last ten winners having had such form to their name However, it is worth noting only two horses in the last decade had finished outside of the first three on their most recent start, as Lake Forest became the second in 2023. A negative for Reciprocated, Egoli, Comical Point, Irish Fighter and Yorkshire Puds.
Interestingly, fewer than half of the winners in the last decade contested a Group race on their most recent outing, with only one of the last twelve winners, being successful in a group race.
CONCLUSION
DISTANCE
Eight of the last twelve winners of this race had previously won over this 6f trip suggesting that the proven ability to stay the trip is becoming more and more important compared to the noughties, when many had not yet graduated from five furlongs. Reciprocated, Egoli, Lifeplan and Rock On Thunder, have all won over six furlongs.
BETTING
In the last decade there have been only three winning favourites of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack but they all came in the last seven years. Nine of those winners were sent off at single-figure odds. Also look to those higher rated, nine of the twelve winners were rated 102 or higher. Only Do Or Do Not is rated above 102 today.
KEY TRENDS
Win over six furlongs
Finished in first three last time
Not favourite
A wide open renewal of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack is currently headed by Do Or Do Not. While favourites don't have an inspiring record, he is the only one with a rating above 102, which has traditionally been a good bench mark. He has however yet to win over six furlongs, which is an important trend and can be overlooked from a trends perspective. Kevin Ryan's impressive record in the race makes ROCK OF THUNDER the pick of the trends this year. A winner over six furlongs, he has already contested a Group race this season, when ninth in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes and he also managed to finish in the first three last time out, when beaten into second. Egoli and Comical Point both contested a Group race last time out but were well beaten and would have to become only the third horse in the last ten years to win when not finishing in the places last time out. Lifeplan is still light on experience but may spring a surprise.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Do Or Do Not ran well for a long way before finishing third in the Vintage at Goodwood and in first-time cheekpieces dropping back to 6f, he looks a major player. RECIPROCATED pulled too hard before finishing last in a Listed race over further at Ascot, but had impressed when winning his first two starts at Nottingham and Carlisle. This test should play to his strengths a lot more, while Egoli won here in July and may hold on for third.

Today’s Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes is run in honour of Tom Lacy, a greatly respected jockey, trainer and breeder and a dear friend of mine who passed away last month at the age of 89.
A great family man and a true lover of horses Tom’s accolades are many, and although more particularly recognised across the Irish sea in his home country, his contribution to the racing industry continues to reverberate throughout the international racing community.
Aside from the many great horses he was associated with – Height Of Fashion as a rider, Ingabelle and Persian Force as a trainer and breeder - perhaps his greatest legacy is to be found in the careers he nurtured, most famously that of the late Pat Smullen, nine times Irish Champion Jockey and winner of 12 European Classics.
They will both be fondly remembered today.

WHEN IS A T TAL PRIZE FUND
NOT A FINAL TOTAL… SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES
The Total Prize Fund is the total amount of money that the horses in a race are competing for and to be split between the winner and the placed horses.
The split of prize money between the podium horses and then between the owner, trainer, jockeys and stable is subject to a fairly complicated formula. However in outline the winning owner receives 441/2%, trainer 51/2%, jockey 4% and stable 21/2%. You can see further details of the split between horses on the page called “Race Conditions” near the back of this racecard.
The prize money on offer at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival is set to attract the very best horses this week. It is funded from several sources; the racecourse itself, the sponsors, the levy board and the entry fees paid by the owners –sometimes referred to as the “Stake” hence the term “Stakes”.
For the major races there are a series of entry dates whereby connections will decide to enter the race and then whether to stay in the race as the performance of the horse and plans for it unfold.
For most Group races, the horses would usually be entered with quite a while to go before the raceday, for example the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes closed for original entries on July 1st.
However, there is a late “supplementary entry” stage six days before the race. This is designed to allow a horse that may be a late developer or whose plans have changed to take their chance. The supplementary entry fee is set at a higher level than the normal entry route so it takes a bold move by the owners. If you think about it terms of playing
poker, the connections of a late entrant have a better idea of their opposition so pay a premium.
In a real example, to explain the numbers today, the total prize fund for the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes has risen because of three supplementary entry, with Lady Iman, Spicy Marg and Rumstar joining the field.
Talented Irish juvenile Lady Iman lines up for Ger Lyons after an emphatic success at Goodwood. She’s only been beaten once in her five starts and is well worth her place in an open looking renewal.
Spicy Marg also tasted victory at Goodwood for Elb Bloodstock and could spring a surprise. Rumstar brings more experience as a five-year-old but is a Group 3 winner already this season.
The breakdown of the new prize pots can be seen below.

JUVENILES IN THE COOLMORE NUNTHORPE
It takes less than a minute to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe, but a very special type of juvenile to get close, let alone win what is now one of the top sprints in Europe
The Nunthorpe has been a Group 1 since 1984, before then two-yearolds enjoyed some success- High Treason, My Beau and Ennis all put their elders in their place in the 1950’s but in more modern times it has been done just twice, by horses rightly called “speedballs.”
Probably the most famous came in 1992 when the amazing Lyric Fantasy, arrived on the Knavesmire unbeaten, with a series of wins that included the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot.
Known as ‘The Pocket Rocket’ she provided Richard Hannon senior with one of his most memorable days as the flying filly saw off stablemate Mr Brooks, who had been sent off as favourite having won the Group One July Cup Somehow jockey Michael ‘Muis’ Roberts managed his weight to ride Lyric Fantasy at a now scarce believable 7st 8lb - it was a huge performance by horse and rider
A little more recently, in 2007, jockey Jimmy Quinn enjoyed probably the most memorable day of his career He was aboard Kingsgate Native, then trained by John Best, as the pairing took advantage of the significant weight concession to storm home from Desert Lord and Dandy Man, with stars like Amadeus Wolf and Red Clubs trailing in their wake
Others have tried and come close- the year before Lyric Fantasy the Jack Berry trained Paris House had come second, beaten only by legendary champion sprinter, Sheikh Albadou. Acapulco sent the Coolmore team loco in 2015, having won the Group 2 Queen Mary, she finished second to Mecca’s Angel. A little over twenty years later in 2022, another locally trained star finished in the same silver medal slot. Richard Fahey sent out The Platinum Queen to find only another legend, Highfield Princess, too fast.
Just two years ago, the Mick Appleby trained Big Evs was sent to post as a 5-1 chance to join the Roll of Honour- but sadly things did not work out and he only beat two horses home on the day that Live in the Dream so memorably grabbed the headlines.
So, it is hugely to the credit of connections of Spicy Marg and Lady Iman that they seek the majority of the now £697,500 purse and their own place in the history of the turf.

The field in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition Breeders’ Cup Ltd have offered an attractive incentive to the winner as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The successful sprinter this afternoon if nominated with Breeders’ Cup will receive both free entry and a guaranteed start gate in the five furlong $1m Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to be run at Del Mar on Saturday November 1st Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to California bound connections and this represents an exciting innovation this year. The feature contests on Wednesday and Thursday had connections and benefits to their equivalent contests; with the Tattersalls Acomb adding a juvenile link, on the same principles.
Those running in today’s Coolmore Wooton Bassett Nunthorpe could well
up in the final sprint race on British Champions Day, Britain’s richest raceday with £4.35 million in prize money on Saturday 18th October.
BLOODSTOCK EROES H
COOLMORE
Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough.
The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree.
Coming up to date and Coolmore, sponsors of today’s feature race, continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Originally, a relatively small farm, owner Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, began transforming it in 1968 and after going into partnership with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster the three men built it up into the well-known stud farm it is today. Vigors sold his interest to O’Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier and it was Magnier who built the stud into a multi-national, multi-billion-euro operation. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. Coolmore’s greatest stallion, Galileo, who was sadly lost in 2021 at the age of 23, destroyed his rivals in both the Epsom Derby and the Irish equivalent before completing an impressive hat-trick in the King George at Ascot. Following his retirement, he was Champion Sire in 12 different years and in August 2024, almost a year ago to the day today, achieved a century of Group 1 winners when Content won the Yorkshire Oaks.
If you were to glance at his most successful progeny, you would see that he has sired many of the best racehorses in recent years, making an indelible mark on modern horse racing. These include Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Gleneagles - all now stallions in their own right but this is
by no means a coincidence.
Galileo was not only a super sire, but he made his name as a sire of sires, with more than 20 of his sons having sired Group 1 winners in their own right, and that trait has no doubt been passed on from his sire Sadler’s Wells. He too stood at Coolmore and comes from the Northern Dancer line, regarded as one of the most productive bloodlines in the history of thoroughbred racing.
In Galileo’s stead, Coolmore now stand numerous big race winners in Camelot, Churchill and more recently Saxon Warrior, St Mark’s Basilica, Paddington and four time Group One winner City Of Troy, all looking to continue their huge influence on the bloodstock world. One standout is Camelot, who now has 73 Group winners and 53 Stakes winners worldwide including last year’s Irish Derby winner Los Angeles and Curragh Pretty Polly winner Bluestocking. This afternoon’s feature race title nods at yet another whose prospects continue to look as bright as his on-course career, Wootton Bassett.
The son of Iffraaj already has 183 Flat Stakes performers, which includes 50 Group winners. Tattersalls Musidora winner Whirl has picked up a duo of Group Ones since that success, first winning Curragh Pretty Polly Stakes before taking the Qatar Nassau Stakes. While both Camille Pissarro and Henri Mattisse have achieved Group One glory in France. Coolmore continue to produce Classic winners year on year and as a result continue to set a benchmark, in part thanks to the exploits of the great Galileo, who will always be much missed.

The Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes FACT
FILE:
A BRIEF HISTORY?
Five furlongs (1,000m)
Prize money £600,000
The race is named after Nunthorpe, an area of York located to the north of the racecourse
The first version, a low-grade selling race, was established in 1903 before the present version began in 1922 when it was won by Two Step.
THE AMERICAN CONNECTION?
The race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011 which means the winner of this year’s race earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday 4th November. Star US-trained filly, Acapulco ran an eye catching second in 2015 and Lady Aurelia filled the same spot in 2017, just pipped at the post by Marsha in a thriller. Golden Pal failed to make amends in 2021 for Wesley Ward And no, neither Arizona Blaze nor Washington Heights actually count as American despite their names!
TWO-YEAR-OLDS?
The race is one of a limited number of races in which two-year-old horses can compete against their elders. The first of just five juveniles to win was High Treason in 1953, and the most recent was Kingsgate Native in 2007. After confident supplementary entries, Spicy Marg or Lady Iman are the pair left who can claim this feat
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
It is one of only three Group 1 five furlong sprints in Europe - the others being the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc day.
FOREIGN RAIDERS?
Ireland’s Dermot Weld won the race in 1984 with Committed. Since then Aidan O’Brien has added a musical double with Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001). Racing fans from the County Meath will be cheering their twin representatives, Arizona Blaze and She’s Quality While Lady Iman has brought Ger Lyons over the Irish Sea.
France’s Robert Collet won the race in 1986 with Last Tycoon as did John Hammond with Nuclear Debate in 2000 despite his non-French passport. Australia chipped in when Ortensia won for Paul Messara in 2012, giving the race a full international flavour Another Aussie Asfoora, is back to have another go after finishing fourth last year
Ortensia
Kingsgate Native
Michael Dods
LEADING TRAINER?
Ossie Bell currently holds the record with 5 victories - Highborn II (1926, 1927), Greenore (1932), Concerto (1933) & Ipsden (1937). In the modern era Aidan O’Brien, Michael Dods, Sir Mark Prescott and Charlie Hills have each won the race twice, though none can add to that tally today. Last year’s winning trainer, Archie Watson, hopes Spartan Arrow will follow Bradsell to give him a brace. In a similar vein the Quinns will have fond memories of Highfield Princess in 2022 as Jm Jungle looks to maintain his progressive trajectory.
LEADING RIDER?
The late Lester Piggott holds the record with 7 victories – Right Boy (1958, 1959), Matatina (1963), Caterina (1966), Tower Walk (1969), Swing Easy (1971) & Solinus (1978). Of the current crop, Jim Crowley and Paul Mulrennan are the only jockeys to ride more than one winner, thanks to their association with Battaash and Mecca’s Angel respectively
HAT-TRICK
HEAVEN
A Century since its first staging, only two horses have managed to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe three times - Tag End in 1928, 1929 & 1930 and Sharpo in 1980, 1981 & 1982. Defending champion, Live in the Dream would join the elevated company of dual winner’s Mecca’s Angel, Battaash, Bordelescott and Sole Power, since the turn of the millennium.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Now in it’s seventeenth year of sponsorship, Coolmore are a worldwide breeding and racing operation.
With studs in Ireland, Australia and the United States they stand some of racings leading stallions including Camelot, Australia, Churchill and Wootton Bassett.
Not too bad at all. In 1997, the White Rose county won the race twice! The David Barron-trained Costal Bluff and the much missed David “Dandy” Nicholls-trained Ya Malak dead-heated for first place. Nicholls then won it outright with Bahamian Pirate in 2004 before our old favourite Borderlescott won back-to-back in 2008-09. Mecca’s Angel scored for the second year in a row for Michael Dods and the North in 2016. Yorkshire have continued their fine form in recent years as Tim Easterby claimed the prize in 2021 with Winter Power. John Quinn’s superstar Highfield Princess landed the race in 2022, rounding off what was an excellent season. A trio of northern operations (Karl Burke, Kevin Ryan & The Quinn’s) will want to repeat that feat

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Lady Iman has stolen all of the headlines leading up to this event as she was supplemented after her Molecomb triumph last month and the daughter of Starman is worth her place at this level. Course winner Jm Jungle produced a career-best when defeating She’s Quality by a neck in a Group 2 at Goodwood earlier in the month and it would be no surprise to see him confirm that form. However, Commonwealth Cup silver medallist ARIZONA BLAZE looks the way to go Adrian Murray’s three-year-old accounted for Mgheera by two lengths in a Group 2 at the Curragh on his most recent start and can continue his upward trajectory

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Zgharta was slowly away and suffered from a troubled passage when fifth over a mile at Goodwood last month. Therefore, with a smoother trip and the step up in distance possibly bringing out improvement, she needs considering. Wonder Star only found one too good in this grade at the same track on her latest outing and is noted, but CAPE FLORA gets the vote. The Gosdens’ filly showed a huge amount of improvement when bolting up at Leicester last month and considering the manner of that triumph, she might defy her 11lb rise

The most valuable maiden in the UK calendar, this race is limited to 2yo horses that have yet to win a race.
All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.
By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record Pedigree is the second option, being the more professional “p”.

KNAVESMIRE TIP
Naval Light almost atoned for a luckless run in Norfolk at Royal Ascot with a rallying second in a similar event over 6f at Goodwood last month. Slowly away that day, he stayed on well enough to suggest stepping up to 7f should be fine Frescobaldi represents Aidan O’Brien/Ballydoyle and appeals after two promising starts in Ireland. However, this race is about deep potential and none fits the bill more than INISHBEG. Having cost 500,000gns as a yearling, the son of Ghaiyyath runs for highly respected connections whose decision to pitch him at this level on debut is a telling indication of expectations. New Monarch and Beny Nahar are other compelling options

KNAVESMIRE TIP
FEARNOT’s third-placed finish in the Britannia at Royal Ascot was highly commendable However, that effort was bettered when he successfully returned to the same venue in an identically deep handicap last month. A 6lb higher rating might should be manageable for Clive Cox’s progressive colt. Montpellier had Yah Mo Be There a place behind when he finished fourth in a similar event over 7f at Goodwood and can confirm the form with improvement possible over this longer trip The unbeaten Big Leader is up in class but also merits respect.
