Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire for some excellent racing action as we are proud to host the Sky Bet Sunday Series for the first time. I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day, whether your primary focus is the equine stars or the musical performers or even. a bit of both! With £200,000 on offer over what look to be seven ultra-competitive contests, this initiative is a collaboration between Sky Bet, ITV and the six racecourses involved through their Racing TV connection. We thank everyone involved in staging today’s fixture. As six of the races are handicaps, the theory says that all of the 116 runners have a chance, so take advantage of any clues you can find to split them - perhaps the Punter’s Panel at 3.05pm, the Press Selections Board or your own eyes as you view them in the Parade Ring. There are plenty of familiar names, perhaps none more so than Dakota Gold who is already a six-time winner on the Knavesmire for Darlington trainer, Michael Dods. Seven would be a new record, regardless of whether Copper Knight reached the same landmark on Saturday. There are generous bonus prizes for successful connections, over the Sky Bet Sunday Series, so the owners of both Eilean Dubh (5.05pm) and Haizoom (6.05pm), as well as Karl Burke and Keith Dalgleish, will be most keen to follow up success at Hamilton. York Racecourse is committed to supporting the sport and to attracting the best horses to race for us all to enjoy. As an indication of this commitment, prize money over the season will reach £10m for the first time. This can only be achieved through the support of racegoers and of our sponsors. The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Champagne Pavilion has been given a fresh new look, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand, the renamed 1731 Pie Shop both celebrates the year when racing started on the Knavesmire and serves a range of home-made goodies. If we are blessed with the weather then the Roberto Village Bar offer a speed of service with nearby outside seating. A special mention to some of our other guests today; all the retired racehorses on parade at 2.30pm (read their stories on p15-18), Freya Thackary in her amazing Aintree to Ascot challenge in aid of Racing Welfare (give her a cheer or better a donation at 3pm), and Remy our equine ambassador who would love to meet you in the Clocktower Enclosure. I hope you enjoy our own version of Queen, a week ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, as we welcome Majesty Queen to entertain us after racing. SHUTTLE BUS A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse, it will operate whilst there are enough customers to make a bus viable. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.

TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.

WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET

The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shops around the course offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.

BAR CLOSING TIMES Bars will remain open up to an hour after the last race. The serving of drinks in hospitality areas, will be as speciﬁed in your booking details. Have an enjoyable time with us but please respect our neighbours and the wider city as you leave the racecourse.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us.

The ﬁrst thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed. FAQS Is there disabled and blue badge parking? Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. Extra space has been reserved immediately in front of the stage, please ask a nearby steward for access. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. Can you name the jockey who won last year’s Sky Bet Ebor.

WHO AM I? Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? 1.

I rode two winners on the Saturday of last year’s Ebor Festival. I’ve ridden in both Classic races this season and have recently won one abroad. I’m best known for riding in one set of silks and this weekend have a well fancied ride in an Irish Classic.

I’m a Nothern trainer that is no stranger on the Knavesmire. I’ve had no fewer than 360 runners at the track and recently one of my horses joined two other’s as York’s winning most horse.

I was born in 1996 and am a regular rider for one of the trainers at the top of the Charles Clincard Trainers Championship table. He is said to be a big fan of the Knavesmire and at the Dante meeting had quite the day to remember.

2.30pm Retraining training aining of o Racehor Racehorsess (RoR) Parade Kindly sponsored spons by y Juddmont Juddmonte Today’s ROR Parade A parade of retrained racehorses takes place in the paddock from 2.15pm to 2.30pm. The parade is kindly sponsored by Juddmonte and showcases the remarkable versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they ﬁnish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features York’s own equine ambassador, Goldream, the Group 1 winning sprinter who is now based at New Beginnings, the Yorkshire charity that retrains and rehomes former racehorses. Also featured in the parade are former racehorses doing diverse second careers such as western riding and horseball, as well as those excelling in the more traditional RoR activities, dressage and showing. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

BOTHWELL CASTLE – ridden by Melissa Fawcett

15-year-old gelding by Captain Rio, formerly trained by Patrick Haslam Breeder – Stephanie Hanley Bothwell Castle had an undistinguished racing career, being placed once from ﬁve starts as a two-year-old and he was last seen on a racecourse in 2009. However, his post-racing career has been much more rewarding. For the last six years he has been with Melissa Fawcett and together the pair have scaled notable heights in both dressage and showing. Among their many accolades won in the dressage arena was that of 2019 RoR Regional League Champions at Elementary level. While in showing the combination have qualiﬁed for the RoR National Championships at Aintree in both the Ridden and In-Hand classes every year from 2018-2021.

BRIDGE VALLEY – ridden by Ruth Wilkinson

15-year-old gelding by Avonbridge, formerly trained by Jason Ward Breeder – D J and Mrs Deer Bridge Valley initially raced in the colours of his owner-breeder, John Deer, for whom he won a Sandown maiden in 2009 when trained by Richard Hannon Snr. Despite racing on until 2014, he failed to add to that one success. Since coming out of training, Bridge Valley has been with Ruth Wilkinson and his laid-back nature has made him a relatively easy horse to retrain. He has excelled in the show ring, winning numerous local classes and graduating to compete nationally, including qualifying for Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden Show Series ﬁnal at Hickstead, among other feats. He has also enjoyed success at dressage and Ruth says of him: “He’s made so many of my dreams and ambitions come true, he’s just the best.”

The winner of a Group 2 race at Deauville and four Listed races, Nearly Caught enjoyed a distinguished ﬁveyear career on the ﬂat as a classy stayer. Retired from racing in 2018, Nearly Caught is now, like Goldream, an ambassador for New Beginnings, the Yorkshire charity that retrains and rehomes former racehorses. Described as “a lovely horse with a super character”, Nearly Caught is enjoying schooling, hacking and competing in dressage competitions, recently picking up third prize in a dressage class.

PEVERIL POINT – ridden by David Worthington

7-year-old by Canford Cliffs, formerly trained by Henry Tett Breeder – Denis McDonnell In a short-lived racing career, Peveril Point ran twice without success before being retired from racing in 2018. He was subsequently bought by Jude Worthington with a view to retraining him to compete in horseball for her husband, David. A long-standing member of Team GB, David has captained the national horseball team at both junior and senior level and enjoyed a lot of success with former racehorse Inchloss, who is now retired. Peveril Point is currently competing in Pro Elite Horseball with David, as well as training in dressage and having the occasional day’s hunting with Jude.

TOUCH OF FAITH – ridden by Jude Worthington

8-year-old by Zoffany, formerly trained by Michael Appleby Breeder – Jusoor Syndicate

Touch Of Faith ran three times on the flat, finishing last on each occasion and on his final run in 2017 he was beaten 58 lengths! Not surprisingly, he was deemed too slow to be a racehorse but he has since found his niche in horseball. Bought and retrained by David Worthington, he competed at Pro Elite level in horseball with David before the ride was transferred to his wife, Jude, for her to compete on in the Horseball Ladies League. Touch of Faith, or Tof as he is known, has also done some dressage and is David’s reserve International horse, alongside Peveril Point.

AINTREE TO ASCOT CHALLENGE

Nine-year-old Freja Thackary is once again taking on an ultimate challenge in aid of Racing Welfare. Having so far raised over £9,000 with her previous two fundraisers, Freja will be covering the distance of Aintree to Ascot (194 miles) using the three triathlon disciplines; swimming, cycling and running. The challenge started during the Cheltenham Festival and will finish during Royal Ascot. Freja is taking the opportunity to get as many of her runs completed at racecourses and will be at completing a leg at York Racecourse today! There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn.There are two William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the seond being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower area will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Goldream was trained by Robert Cowell in Newmarket and was a dual Group 1 winner of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and Prix de L’Abbaye at Longchamp and he also enjoyed some successful trips here at York! He is now retired from racing and resides at the rehoming and re-training of racehorses’ charity New Beginnings. KNAVESMIRE TIP A devilishly competitive race in which recent Hamilton winner Eilean Dubh should go well again despite a 5lb rise, but better value may lie with the three horses who ﬁnished immediately behind him at the Scottish venue, Mostawaa, Harswell Duke and A BOY NAMED IVY. JOINT WINNING-MOST HORSE HERE EYES ON OUR FIFTH RACE WHEN DAKOTA GOLD, HOPES TO RECORD WIN NUMBER SEVEN. On a summer evening back in July 2017, as most attention was switching to the concert stage where Jess Glynne fans gathered, a shrewd bunch of connections kept their eyes firmly on the track as Dakota Gold justified the favourite’s tag when delivering win number one on the Knavesmire. The coming years would see the Michael Dods trained bay gelding rise up through the handicap marks, with increasingly high-profile successes. The six-figure prize in the Sky Bet Dash, then the opening contest of the Ebor Festival 2019, followed by a Group 2 triumph in the Bengough Stakes which had been rerouted to York from a soggy Ascot. His most recent victory came on the opening day of this 2022 season at the Dante Festival. Owned throughout by Doug Graham and members of the Davison family, you sense his story has not yet been fully written.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Dakota Gold returned to winning ways at the Dante meeting, when having several of these in behind, and the eight-year-old commands respect once again, despite a 4lb rise for that effort. His stable companion Pendleton, who was third in that contest, is expected to be in the mix once again, but the vote goes to ADAAY TO REMEMBER. An A-Z of information for racegoers Abandoned Racing

In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on badges and tickets purchased will only be paid in the following circumstances. a) before the ﬁrst race - 100% refund. b) before the completion of three races - 50% refund. c) therafter - no refund applies. Refunds cannot be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, racegoers who purchased their admission on the day should send the ticket they were given on entrance with their full name and address to: York Racecourse, York, YO23 1EX within 30 days.Racegoers who booked in advance direct with the track and so paid by card will receive an automatic refund. Alcohol And Public Order

The Racecourse takes its responsibilities under Licensing Laws very seriously and puts in place training and measures to exceed these obligations. Racegoers are urged to drink responsibly. Alcohol cannot be brought into the stands side enclosures. York Racecourse reserves the right to expel any person found to be drunk or behaving in a disorderly manner. The “Challenge 25” initiative will be in operation to ensure that only those aged 18 and over are served with alcohol. Thank you for your support of this obligation.

Cameras

Please feel free to take a souvenir photo of your day. However we would remind you that the preparation and performance of the sport must be ensured, so please note:1. Kindly refrain from ﬂash photography. 2. Avoid taking photos in restricted areas used by the sporting professionals i.e. Saddling Boxes, Stables, Unsaddling Boxes & Weighing Room. 3. Respect the privacy of others.

Cigarettes and e-cigarettes

The current smoking legislation regarding smoking in public places applies at the racecourse. The use of e-cigarettes is permitted, however they will be treated the same as tobacco products.

Common Courtesy/Entry Conditions

All persons visiting York Racecourse are admitted subject to Racecourse Regulations and the Rules of Racing. The Racecourse reserves the right to refuse admission or remove from the racecourse any person refusing to comply with the Rules and Regulations or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. Dogs

Racegoers are requested to leave their pets including all dogs at home. Guide and Assistance dogs are welcome.

First Aid

There are ﬁrst aid posts in the Edwardian Weighing Room, other such buildings have been designated as isolation rooms, should they be required. 78

Dress Standards

Most racegoers like to make racing at York a special occasion and choose to dress accordingly. Given the unique nature of today, there is no formal dress code in the County Stand. T-shirts are welcome in all areas. Trainers, tailored shorts and jeans have always been accepted. All racegoers are reminded that the removal of shirts is not encouraged and that basic decency and not causing offence to fellow racegoers by clothing choices, is required. York Racecourse reserves the right to refuse or, to require anyone to leave who does not observe the above code.

Drugs

A zero tolerance policy on drug abuse is in force, be warned, North Yorkshire Police and our own team are watching with some canine help, sniffing.

Litter

Racegoers are requested to place all litter in the receptacles provided. If you do not need your racecard please place it in a bin as you leave the racecourse.

Noise

So that the horses have the best chance to perform and so your fellow racegoers have the opportunity to enjoy them please do not cause any distractions; the waving of ﬂags or banners, use of radios or making of sudden noises are examples of things to avoid. Racegoers are reminded of Public Health England advice that shouting increases the risk of the spread of diseases, so to consider wearing your face covering when part of a cheering crowd.

Parade Ring

For safety reasons children under the age of twelve are not permitted into the Parade Ring or Unsaddling Enclosure.

Photo Finishes And Stewards’ Enquiries/Objections

In any race where Photo Finish has been called by the Judge, this information will be displayed on the Giant Screen. An announcement will also be broadcast. Race Results and Photographs will also be displayed on the York Racecourse television monitors.

Radios and Mobile Telephones

The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse.

Track Safety

For your own safety and the welfare of the horses, jockeys and stable staff please keep off the track. Anyone trespassing on the track: Will be liable to arrest and prosecution Will be ejected immediately Will be banned from all future York race meetings May face a nationwide racecourse ban
