The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2025
A BIG HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE 64TH BADGER CHASE DAY!
As Britain’s oldest brewing family we are delighted to have renewed Britain’s oldest racing sponsorship which will take us up to our 250th birthday in 2027.
Horses have historically played a big part in our company. Beer was being delivered by horse drawn drays until the 1950s and we are delighted to have our Badger bottle dray here today pulled by two of Mike Yorke’s magnificent Suffolk Punches, Wallace and Nosey.
Don’t forget that there will be a parade of past winners at 11.30 in the Parade Ring including our very own Present Man.
We are here today with over 400 of the Hall & Woodhouse Family and we would like to wish them and everyone here a great day’s racing.
If you would like to know more about our Badger Beers or our lovely pubs please visit www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk
Cheers!

THE 64TH BADGER BEER HANDICAP CHASE
The first Badger Beer Chase was run in 1962, where it was won by Quick Step II fortrainerW R Williams, who incidentally also rode him to victorythat day.
Hall and Woodhouse are the longest current sponsor in British Jump Racing after beginning their sponsorship back in 1962. The race was originally run over a distance of two-miles-and-five-furlongs until 1990 but was then upped in distance to its current three-miles-and-one-furlong.
In 2003 it was awarded Listed status but with the removal of Listed races in 2022, it then became a Premier Handicap, which it has been known as ever since.
Nova Light became the first horse to win the race twice, in 1970 and 1972 respectively for trainer Les Kennard. He has since been joined by Panto Prince (1990,93), Flaked Oats (1999,2000), Swansea Bay (2002,2003) and finally Present Man (2017,2018), for the current leading trainer Paul Nicholls.
The master of Ditcheat has trained no fewer than eleven runners to victory since 1999, with his first winner coming courtesy of Flaked Oats, who also became the first back-to-back winner of the race when following it up 12 months later under Timmy Murphy.
His most famous winner was probably 2022 winner Frodon, who was a real star for the yard The son of Nickname won three Grade One’s, including the King George and Ryanair Chase and amassed over a million pounds in prize money and is arguably the most impressive winner of the race
Bryony Frost also won the race in 2017 and 2018 on the Present Man but the leading jockey is Timmy Murphy on five wins. His success came between 2000 and 2012, with his final winner coming courtesy of The Package in 2012 for David Pipe, who himself has three winners on the roll of honour
Frodon
The 64th Badger Beers Handicap Chase looks set to be another highly competitive renewal, and the weights will be headed by Paul Nicholl’s Threeunderthrufive. The ten-year-old was pulled up on his final two starts of last season but has undergone wind surgery over the summer as he bids to go one spot better than his runner-up finish in this race in 2023.
Act Of Diplomacy won five on the spin for Mickey Bowen over fences before his winning run came to an end at Chepstow last time, but the nine-year-old looked sure to play a leading part before falling at the final fence that day and is a likely type to bounce back.
Anthony Honeyball trained the winner in 2023 and returns this year with last year’s third Gustavian as well as the consistent mare Credo, already a winner at the track over fences. Joe Tizzard’s Scarface celebrated a well-deserved victory on his final start of the campaign at Newton Abbott following a string of placed efforts, and he is an interesting runner stepping up in trip for the first time from a 6lb higher mark.

PRIZE MONEY
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £288,948 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 15th September to 31st December 2025.
British racing has reduced the number of horses that fall by a third and fatalities to 0.25% of 90,000 yearly runners.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Wincanton Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
