13. Breeder

14. Trainer

15. Jockey

16. Sponsor 15

★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

BHA Ratings Explained

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile and three furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card at Taunton this afternoon, including the opening Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Novices’Hurdle.

Paul Nicholls has saddled the winner in four of the past five renewals and so recent course and distance scorer Calvino must therefore merit plenty of respect. The Walk In The Park six-year-old asserted strongly in the closing stages to beat a next-time-out winnerandlooksasmartprospect.

for novice four yrs old and upwards x Total prize fund £9000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3635, 2nd £1817, 3rd £909, 4th £455, 5th £227. (Penalty Value £4752.90)

Race Description

This is a two mile and three furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

Owners Prize Money. 1st £5372, 2nd £2685, 3rd £1343, 4th £672, 5th £335. (Penalty Value £7023.73)

Race Description

This is a two miles and five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 80 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 4)

for four yrs old and upwards x Total prize fund £10500

Owners Prize Money. 1st £4241, 2nd £2120, 3rd £1061, 4th £530, 5th £265. (Penalty Value £5545.05)

Race Description

This is a handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards run just under three miles which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

BOBBI WITH AN I sets the standard on form and should be the one to beat if back on song, though Handin Manypockets does make appeal following a quick switch to handicaps, while Snapdance looks a solid proposition back over 3m.

Race Description

2m 7f 3y

This is a handicap Steeplechase race for five-year-old and upward mares’ run over two miles and seven furlongs, which have been rated from 0 to 120.

DECLARED RUNNERS 12 2025: SINCHI ROCA (IRE) 5 11 2 Harry Cobden 7-2 (Anthony Charlton) 6 ran Hood worn first time by No. 5. Tongue Strap worn first time by No. 1. Running for the first time since Gelding No. 1, 2, 7, 9. Stewards Note: QUICKKICK: Following its run on 9/1/2026 it was reported that the horse ran too freely.

Probable S.P’s: 5-2 Rices Pool (IRE), 7-2 Roximan (FR), 13-2 Par Avion (GB), 7-1 The Noble Butler (IRE), 10-1 Quickkick (IRE), 16-1 Teletime (GB), 20-1 Jiggy Waller (GB), 40-1 Jim Santiago Bowie (GB), 50-1 Sharp Tor (GB), Up The Hill (GB), 100-1 Lucky Bailly (FR), Lakeview Lass (GB)

The betting should prove informative with several of these Rules debutants but preference is for RICES POOL, who fetched €92,000 as a 3-y-o and represents a yard synonymous with bumper success. Roximan was disappointing in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham in January but can build on his debut promise at the second attempt, while Par Avion could well take off with his debut effort under his belt.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £236,559 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 1st January to 27th March 2026.
