Carried into the winner’s enclosure by some of racing’s greatest talents, it’s hard not to spot the silks somewhere on a racecard every day across the country. The 2025/26 season has been no different for JP McManus with over 50 winners and £2,700,000+ in prize money, no doubt bolstered by I Am Maximus in the Randox Grand National. This year will see him win for the tenth successive season, the 18th time this century in Britain, setting a record that will take some surpassing in the future.

SEAN BOWEN

CHAMPION JOCKEY

PROFILE: Sean Bowen enjoyed a dominant season as Britain’s top jump jockey, cementing his status as a leading figure in National Hunt racing. He amassed over 200 winners and maintained an impressive strike rate of around 24–25%, finishing well clear of his nearest rivals in the championship standings. His consistency across both hurdles and chases, combined with a relentless work rate, saw him ride hundreds of times throughout the campaign. This is his second Champion Jockey title after securing the honours last year.

TRISTAN DURRELL

CHAMPION CONDITIONAL

PROFILE: The indications that he could one day break into the ranks of established jockeys have been clear for some time. He made an immediate impression by winning on only his second ride, though it took nearly two years before he added another victory to his record. From that point on, his career has followed a pattern of steady improvement, with double-digit win totals in each of the past four years. Prior to this season.

CHAMPION TRAINER

PROFILE: Dan Skelton needs no introduction. From his base in Alcester, Skelton has enjoyed a fruitful 2025/26 season and has gone one better than last year, when he was runner-up to Willie Mullins.

Highlights include The New Lion taking the honours in the Unibet Hurdle at Cheltenham in January, Grey Dawing winning the Melling Chase at Aintree earlier this month and also Bossman Jack in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle.

CONSTITUTION HILL

One of the most electrifying horses of his generation, CONSTITUTION HILL enjoyed a fabulous hurdling career and has now made a switch to the Flat for a new chapter with trainer Nicky Henderson Quickly adapting to his new discipline, he has already made an impact with a series of impressive victories, including smooth successes at Kempton Park and Southwell. Still showing all the class and natural speed that defined his hurdling days, this marks his farewell to Jump racing fans as he begins an exciting new chapter on the Flat

GREY DAWNING

GREY DAWNING has delivered a series of impressive performances this season. Trained by Dan Skelton, he made a winning reappearance in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock Park and followed up later in the season with a thrilling victory at Aintree’s Randox Grand National Festival, landing the Grade 1 JCB Melling Chase after a fierce battle A striking grey with real presence, he has become one of the most eye-catching and memorable horses on the track.

OLD PARK STAR

Trained by Nicky Henderson, OLD PARK STAR has enjoyed a fine season, establishing himself as a highly progressive and exciting novice hurdler. He began the campaign with a commanding victory at Kempton Park in November before following up with a wide-margin success at Cheltenham in December. He then stepped up again in Grade 2 company, landing a dominant 18-length win at Haydock Park in January, before capping off the season with a brilliant Grade 1 triumph in the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Improving with every run, OLD PARK STAR has firmly marked himself out as one of the leading young hurdlers in training.

JANGO BAIE

A hugely exciting and high-class chaser, JANGO BAIE has enjoyed a superb season at the highest level. Trained by Nicky Henderson, he opened his campaign with a smooth Grade2successatAscotinNovemberintheLadbrokes1965Chase.JANGOBAIElater put in a big performance to finish second in the Boodles Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival before returning to winning ways in spectacular fashion at Aintree, powering clear in the Grade 1 Racing Welfare Bowl Chase.

PROTEKTORAT

A true fan favourite, PROTEKTORAT has been a standout performer at the highest level in recent seasons. Doyen Quest has quickly developed into a smart chaser this season and is entitled to strip fitter for his recent run at Aintree which came after a break. Matterhorn should have no problem with the extra 2f and warrants respect, too.

RACE DESCRIPTION: The highest class race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 10lb although mares do receive a 7lb allowance.

Our feature race is the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase, run over threemilesandfivefurlongs.FirststagedatSandownParkinitscurrent format in 1957, it is a race steeped in history and heritage, much like the fixture itself.

The first winner of the race was Much Obliged in 1957. Back then, the race was known as the Whitbread Gold Cup due to its sponsorship by Whitbread Brewers From there, it has grown into the prestigious contest we see today, with legends such as Arkle, Mill House, Diamond Edge, Desert Orchid and Tidal Bay all producing memorable performances to lift the trophy.

No performance was more spectacular than Arkle in 1965 Despite carrying a lofty weight of 12st 7lbs - a burden rarely seen on a racecourse today - he still dominated a high-class field in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest weight-carrying performances in racing history.

The race’s most successful trainer to date is Fulke Walwyn, who landed it seven times. His first success came in 1958 with Taxidermist, before Mill House produced another remarkable effort in 1967, defying 11st 11lbs in a display of true class. That would prove to be Mill House’s final major victory before retirement thefollowingseasonduetoinjurysetbacks TherewasalsoaRoyalwinneramong Walwyn’s septet, when in 1984 The Queen Mother’s Special Cargo came out on top in a three-way photo in what was probably the greatest finish ever seen in the contest

It is impossible to reflect on the bet365 Gold Cup without mentioning the iconic Desert Orchid Affectionately known as “Dessie”, his striking grey coat made him a fan favourite throughout the 1980s. His victory here in 1988 under top weight only enhanced his status as one of the greats of the sport. More recent renewals have continued to deliver drama and storylines Tidal Bay, another hugely popular performer, won the race in 2012 under top weight for jockey Daryl Jacob, overcoming his quirky style with sheer ability. Father-andson duo Peter and Sean Bowen combined for a memorable success with Henllan Harri in 2017, while Hewick travelled across from Ireland to win for Shark Hanlon in 2022 - a horse who would go on to land both the American Grand National and the King George VI Chase.

Last year saw RESPLENDANT GREY etch his name into the history books with a standout performance in the 2025 renewal, confirming his place among the modern-day winners of this prestigious staying handicap.
