A guide to the horse’s recent form

RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

RUBBING HOUSE

From

this To

Salisbury Racecourse’s oldest building, the Rubbing House, which dates back to the 17th century, has recently been restored.

Located opposite the parade ring, on the inside of the track, it was constructed sometime between 1675 and 1706, and is considered by racing historians, to be very likely the oldest building on a racecourse anywhere in the world. Racing at Salisbury itself dates back to 1584, making it second only to Chester, in terms of age.

The Rubbing House became Grade II Listed in May 2020 subsequent to further information about its significance being unearthed by Jim Beavis, during the writing of his book ‘The History of Salisbury Racecourse’, the previous year.

The course at Salisbury was originally between 3 and 4 miles long and races started to the western side of the modern-day course, running along the Old Shaftesbury Drove, before finishing near to where the existing winning post is now. In those early days, races were usually run as heats between two or three animals and the Rubbing House would be used to rest and keep the horses warm between heats. Once inside, the horses were rubbed down with a wooden scraper to remove sweat, dust and dirt.

Jeremy Martin, Executive Director & Clerk of the Course said:

“I don’t think we fully appreciated what a historical gem we had until the writing of Jim’s book. We knew it was old but the fact that racing greats Eclipse and Gimcrack would both have been rubbed down in there after they raced at the course in the 1760’s, is something quite special, and of which we are very proud. It had fallen into a considerable state of disrepair, so the Board decided that it was time to press on and bring this wonderful 350-year-old building back to life. Everyone at the racecourse is delighted, as it is a very important part of our long history

Materials used in the restoration have been similar to those in the original construction including handmade plain clay tiles on the re-instated 35 degrees hipped roof, full height timber doors in English Oak, and lime mortar for the extensive wall repairs and pointing.

The owners of the winning horse of today’s first race will be asked to “cut the ribbon” to officially open the restored Rubbing House.

Running for the first time since Gelding No 2.

Raceform Median Time: 1 min 30.50 secs

2025: EL MATADOR (IRE) 3 9 4 Hector Crouch 2-5 (Ralph Beckett) 4 ran

Betting Forecast: 10-3 Storming Point (GB), 4-1 Seven Sisters (GB), 11-2 Binmalk (GB), 6-1 Poetry of Time (GB), 7-1 Guitar Solo (GB), 12-1 Dream Vega (IRE), 16-1 Dream Camp (IRE), 20-1 The Bureau Club (FR), 150-1 Tass (GB)

Race Summary: STORMING POINT was only pipped by a now-useful sort on debut last season, and he’s fancied to get off the mark at the second time of asking. Poetry of Time is entitled to be in the mix, especially if improving on first start following a gelding operation, while newcomer Seven Sisters very much catches the eye on pedigree.

PRECISE was impressive in the Fillies’ Mile over C&D when last seen and should be hard to beat with further improvement on the cards this year Venetian Sun wasn’t seen to best effect behind the selection when losing her unbeaten record in the Moyglare and may provide the main threat, with the fact her dam stayed 1 1/4m suggesting 1m should be within range.
