Good afternoon and a very warm welcome as we get the 2026 season underway here at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse.

Last year saw a significant investment in Stable Staff accommodation, with 19 ensuite bedrooms and a refurbishment of the television room and canteen. This year there is investment in partnership with CGC Event Caterers on the course in the form of a new Pizza outlet opposite the silver lawn, we know how popular the pizza van always is, so wanted to provide a permanent outlet with greater capacity.

It is an exciting afternoon on the track, with the Ripon ‘Cock O’ the North’ Handicap, the Ripon Silver Bowl and the Armstrong Memorial all set to be highly competitive, packed with familiar favourites such as Fortamour, Intervention and Mister Sox. Ripon favourite and seven-time winner Garden Oasis runs in The Go Racing in Yorkshire Apprentice Handicap, which is the second race in the Future Stars Apprenticeship Series. The first race was at Doncaster and after round 1, Owen Lewis and Connor Whiteley share the top spot on the leaderboard.

We are delighted to welcome Erin & Austinne to the bandstand this afternoon, an acoustic duo performing across the North East, North Yorkshire and beyond with performances before and between races.

Looking ahead, we have a fantastic, themed Feature Day on Saturday 25th April – our Down to the Races: 1930s Style raceday. Come in costume and experience a fantastic day at the races with traditional games, vintage cars, and a photo booth to catch everyone looking splendid!

Have a fantastic afternoon, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

MIND OVER MATTER sets the standard and should appreciate returning to both turf and a longer trip. The son of Starspangledbanner disappointed over the minimum distance at Newcastle most recently but is better judged on the promise shown in two previous starts over 6f at Ayr. The Untamed was a clear second on his debut at Chelmsford and is likely to take a step forward. Vega Storm and Different Opinions also warrant close inspection.

WIN: MIND OVER MATTER

RACE 2

WIN:

RACE 3

DANGER: THE UNTAMED

URCHIN was a promising third when introduced in a similar contest over the mile here last August. The way the son of Ulysses rallied in the closing stages that day would suggest he ought to do better over middle distances this year Poppeye also caught the eye on his debut over 1m4f at Southwell and is another key player. Sea And Sun, Sun Lord and Picaro are interesting newcomers and must be monitored in the betting.

Tim Easterby has a good record in this race and can strike again with STORM ESME, who arrives having won two of her three starts as a juvenile. Considered good enough to tackle the Redcar Two-Year-Old-Trophy in between successes at Newcastle and Leicester, the daughter of Palace Pier looks a bright prospect for handicaps this term. YySpirit, Wyle Cop and Empress Olivia all know how to win races and are other notable contenders for the shortlist.

WIN: STORM ESME

RACE 4

DANGER: YY SPIRIT

KATS BOB makes a lot of sense in this competitive handicap because his comeback second at Catterick was a performance full of promise, and he’s clearly come out of that race in good form to be turned out just eight days later. Roberto Caro finished a solid third at Newcastle and switches to turf with every chance, while Sixtygeesbaby is another to note.

WIN: KATS BOB

RACE 5

DANGER: ROBERTO CARO

SPOKENTRUTH could be the one here following a pleasing comeback run at Doncaster Highly tried when trained in Ireland, the five-year-old finished a solid fourth on Town Moor and, entitled to have come forward for the run, this could be the time to catch him. Of the others, keep a close eye on the returning Pomme Pomme and C&D scorer Spioradalta.

WIN: SPOKEN TRUTH

RACE 6

DANGER: POMME POMME

Whilst a few of these are making their seasonal returns, it could pay to side with the race-fit SAXON PRINCE.Astep up in trip is likelyto suit given that he went desperately close over 7f at Kempton latest, whilst a first run on the grass might prove vital to his progress too. Fickle Mcselfish and Sailor Batt have both been in decent form on the all-weather lately and are more appealing than some. Domination is also noted.

WIN: SAXON PRINCE

RACE 7

DANGER: FICKLE MCSELFISH

There are no fewerthan five previous C&Dwinners on showforthe finale and ONTHE RIVER might be the pick of them. A creditable fifth in the Spring Mile at Doncaster latest, a run whichshouldhave blownawayanycobwebs, hecantake thenecessarystepforward, not least because the excellent HarryVigors gets aboard to take 5lb off his back. Walsingham’s winning run came to an end at Doncaster in October but he’d been otherwise progressive and might bounce back, whilst Cosmos Raj heads the remainder.

WIN: ON THE RIVER DANGER: WALSHINGHAM

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile, two furlongs and 190 yards. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and up in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a six furlong handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yard handicap race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
