Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse for our first Saturday fixture of the 2026 season.
It was wonderful to be back in action at our season opener last Thursday, and we are delighted to welcome you for another fantastic afternoon of racing at our Down to the Races: 1930s Style raceday. There is plenty to enjoy around the Racecourse today: The Definitive Vintage Singer will be performing classic hits on the bandstand to set the tone, quintessentially English lawn games are available in the Course Enclosure, and a small display of classic cars on the Claro Lawn offers the perfect photo opportunity. Be sure to visit Valentina Photobooth by the bandstand to capture some special moments, 1930’s style with friends and family.
One of our feature races this afternoon is the M.C.H. Hutchinson Memorial Trophy Handicap at 3.35. This race holds great significance for my family, as it is run in memory of my father, Michael Hutchinson, who was involved in the running of the racecourse for over 50 years. He made an immense contribution to both the racecourse and the City of Ripon and is greatly missed. This race remains a fitting tribute to his legacy. Course & Distance winners Gibside and Dancingwithmyself head to the start—can they do it again today?
We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day with us, and we look forward to welcoming you back in just under a fortnight on Friday 8th May. We are joined by Reef Hound for our first evening fixture of the season and our very first Twilight Tracks Music Evening, where you can stay on after racing for a while and have a dance.
With very best regards,
JAMES HUTCHINSON
Managing Director

Ripon Racecourse requests that you observe all Health & Safety requirements whilstyou are here today. Please do not stand in the aisles of the Grandstand as this could prevent access in an emergency We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse.

The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 3.00 Zimmerman (won off 76 down 10lb to 66);
3.35 Prydwen (won off 107 down 9lb to 98); 4.45 Poet’s Dawn (won off 67 down 3lb to 64); Up The Jazz (won off 69 down 6lb to 63); 4.10 Equity Law (won off 83 down 7lb to 76); Vince L’Amour (won off 83 down 9lb to 74); Dream Composer (won off 93 down 15lb to 78).

Navy Light and Thai Ginger look the pick of the newcomers and any market support would have to be noted. However, it might be worth chancing BLUESTONE LADY in the hope that experience can win the day. She wasn’t unfancied on debut at Beverley 10 days ago, despite getting a bit upset in the parade ring, and she’s entitled to have come on plenty for that outing.
WIN: BLUESTONE LADY
DANGER: NAVY LIGHT
ROMANCE SPIRITshould take a bit of beating in this maiden. She didn’t get the perfect start on debut at Southwell but caught the eye overcoming that at the business end and her running-on second went down as a promising display. With improvement forthcoming, she gets a confident vote ahead of newcomer Triumph and the returning Miss Malone To You.
WIN: ROMANCE SPIRIT
DANGER: TRIUMPH
NO MORE BOLERO made no mistake on his return to Flat duty at Bath and, a winner over hurdles at Ludlow in November, it could be worth sticking with James Owen’s charge while he’s in this sort of form. Rupert The Prince was progressive in this sphere lastyearand is back on the level following a lacklustre hurdling displayat Newcastle. He heads the list of dangers from Tarbat Ness.
WIN: NO MORE BOLERO
DANGER: RUPERTTHE PRINCE
DANCINGWITHMYSELF gets the vote on the basis that she was in good form towards the end oflast season and has picked upwhere she left offcourtesyofa solid runner-up effort on her reappearance at Musselburgh. With a step forward, the C&D winner ticks a lot of boxes and makes more appeal than distance scorers Prydwen and Stressfree.
Course winner SEVEN QUESTIONS made an encouraging start to the season when third in this grade at Pontefract earlier in the month and was kindly dropped 1lb. With the Robert Cowell team in fine order, he looks the one to beat. Dream Composer lurks on an appealing mark on his first start for Tony Carroll and needs considering, while Newmarket second Dyonisos isn’t ruled out either
The Sweet Escape went in by the smallest of margins at Nottingham on his most recent start and should mount a bold bid to follow up, but KISS ME MY LOVE makes more appeal. The daughter of Invincible Spirit caught the eye when outrunning her odds of 40/1 to finish fourth in a class 4 event at Southwell and, with Luke Morris taking over in the plate, she could be primed to strike. Highland Olly completes the shortlist.
WIN: KISS ME MY

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This contest just short of one mile and two furlongs is for fillies and mares aged three to five-years-old and is specifically for those that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

ROMANCE SPIRIT seemed to be learning on the job when finishing runner-up on debut at Southwell earlier in the month so, with improvement on the cards heading up in trip, Marco Botti’s 3-y-o is difficult to oppose. Today at Ripon Races, Dawne (Granma Dawne) is celebrating her 80th birthday. A much-loved mum, granma and great-granma, she has 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A lifelong horse rider and racing fan, Dawne has ridden all her life. After moving to Ryedale, she worked at Easterby Racing Stables before raising her family in Helmsley. She has also been secretary of the Sinnington Hunt and, with her late partner Wilf, enjoyed many days out hunting.
Dawne still works at neighbouring Thirsk Racecourse, selling programmes and driving the race doctor around the course. Ever kind, supportive and hardworking, she is truly loved by all.
Today she is joined by her daughters, granddaughter and friend Jill. Sadly, due to current flight disruptions, her daughter Annie can’t be here from Australia, but her family are delighted to make this a very special day for a wonderful lady who deserves a huge thank you.
Happy birthday Mum! We love you very much and appreciate everything you do

This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 120+.

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – in this case 5lb for four to six-year-olds and 4lb for seven-year-olds and upwards.

Our penultimate race is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight, and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
