Dear Racegoer,
On behalf of all the team here at Punchestown, I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to the home of Irish jump racing. Today marks the first of our fixtures for the 2025/2026 season, and our staff have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the track looks its very best.

We are delighted to welcome today’s sponsors: BetVictor, Callaghan Aluminium supporting Meath Hunt and Thoroughbred Remedies Ireland. Racing simply would not be possible without the commitment of sponsors, and we are truly grateful for their ongoing support of both Punchestown and Irish racing as a whole.
We are especially excited to partner with Thoroughbred Remedies Ireland (TRM) as they launch their Best Turned Out Series “Saddled In Style” at Punchestown. This initiative allows us to recognise the hard work and dedication of grooms and stable staff, giving them well-deserved acknowledgement while promoting excellence across our racing community
Looking ahead, we’re hoping to see you all at the Punchestown Premiere Weekend on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd November With Grade 1 action on both days, delicious food, family packages, and plenty of surprises in store, it’s set to be an occasion not to be missed. VITORIO PIEL looked a smart prospect when making all on debut in a 20-runner bumper at the Festival meeting here in May. That form appears solid as his rivals were well strung out behind and the race has thrown up a number of winners. Gameball easily won a Ballinrobe bumper for Andy Slattery this summer and looks an exciting gelding for new connections, while point-to-point winner Kovanis made a successful start under Rules at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting. Minella Hollow was a dual bumper winner last year and has the benefit of a run over hurdles at Navan last month, while O’Reilly has been placed twice recently over hurdles.

Flidais showed improved form last time when scoring over 2m7f at Tipperary, while John Ryan is also represented by Andyourbirdcansing, who was still in contention when falling at the last over fences at Galway last week.

AVALO won a Wexford maiden in good style back in May and has been a model of consistency since. The selection has been placed on his latest four starts including when beating all bar favourite Shadow Paddy over this trip at Listowel. Ballycashin went close over this trip at Clonmel back in June and looks a serious threat after finishing well when narrowly denied over 2m2f at Listowel last time Serienmond weakened in the closing stages when reappearing after a summer break at Listowel, while Tramore maiden winner Captain Ryan Matt is an interesting recruit to handicaps.

Regardless of their actual date of birth (or foaling to use a racing term), all thoroughbred racehorses in the Northern hemisphere sharethesamebirthday-1st January.IntheSouthernhemisphere all horses share 1st August due to the fact that the seasons are reversed
You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

KING OF KINGSFIELD looks to have decent claims of winning for the third time over fences. A smart hurdler, the Gordon Elliott-trained gelding won his first two starts over fences this season. Although beaten at Roscommon on his last run, this looks an easier assignment. Stepping up an additional two furlongs in trip could easily see the former point-to-point winner improve on what he has done to date. Birdie Or Bust has yet to reach the same heights over fences that she did as a hurdler However, the Henry De Bromhead-trained mare showed a bit more when winning at Listowel last month. Blaze The Way has to step up on what he has shown thus far but shouldn’t be discounted WIN: KING OF KINGSFIELD EACH-WAY: BIRDIE OR BUST

With an official rating of 160 and receiving weight from his main danger, HEART WOOD should take the beating. A winner of a Listed race at Wexford on his return last October, the Henry De Bromhead-trained gelding clearly runs well fresh. His narrow defeat in the Grade 1 Drinmore Chase and, runner-up position in the Ryanair Chase, set a very high standard in the context of this race Galway Plate winner Western Fold has to be respected in his bid for a five-timer Lightly raced over fences, the Gordon Elliott-trained six-year-old has leading claims but won’t find the concession of 8lb an easy task. Stablemate Croke Park is also not without his chance in a competitive affair WIN: HEART WOOD EACH-WAY: WESTERN FOLD

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.
BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.
CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.
EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.
HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.
Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2
All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3
Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

Narrowly denied on his sole point-to-point outing, MAVERICK MACK can make a winning Rules debut. Having his first start for Gordon Elliott, the four-year-old Pillar Coral gelding is sure to be well prepared for this introduction. It will be interesting to see how strong he is in the market for a yard that tend to do well with their bumper runners. Famous Figure was disappointing at Ballinrobe last month but would be a serious contender on the form of his eighth placed finish at the festival here in April. Takiwatanga, who finished third in that aforementioned Ballinrobe race, has to be respected on his second start for Emmet Mullins.

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.
For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!
