Dear Friends Of Punchestown,
On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to Boodles Champion Hurdle Day on the penultimate day of the 2026 Punchestown Festival
The Punchestown Festival is a massive event that ignites local pride and captures national attention. A celebration over 5 days for the culmination of the jumps season boasting 12 Grade 1 races and a record prize fund of over €3.6 million in 2026 drawing champions, dreamers and crowds from far and wide With a reputation which brings both responsibility and pressure to deliver perfect jumping ground It is Ireland’s largest corporate hospitality event, where top class racing meets the glamour of fashion, the joy of entertainment and creates special moments and memories that last a lifetime. But beyond the numbers, the prestige and the spectacle - Punchestown is more than that, Punchestown is special, Punchestown is tradition.
Our key focus is to instil that tradition so that the business continues to evolve and grow so that we safeguard Punchestown for the generations to come We were also delighted to be recognised as Racecourse of the Year in Ireland in 2025 following a hugely successful year This would simply not be possible without the support of each and every one of you and the integral part you play in continuing the Punchestown tradition, Thank You.
The Grade 1 €300,000 Boodles Champion Hurdle is one of the most eagerly anticipated contests of the week. This race is renowned for its illustrious roll of honour producing timeless champions such as our most recent winner State Man, Honeysuckle, Faugheen, Hurricane Fly, Jezki, Hardy Eustace and of course the legendary Istabraq. I would like to extend a very warm Punchestown welcome to all the family and team in Boodles back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing for this fascinating spectacle I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our commercial partners today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. Without their involvement it wouldn’t be possible for us to attract and showcase the very best jump racing stars on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season.
It is not all just about the action on the racecourse today either as the social aspect of the Punchestown Festival really comes into its own. The overall winner of the Bollinger Best Dressed will be judged and announced shortly after the first race in the Bollinger Lounge and Garden located in the Style Quarter in the Southern Enclosure, so make sure to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the colour, style and elegance that it provides.
The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour, and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and hopefully you get a few winners as well!
I look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow for more exhilarating action with the €125,000 Grade 1 SBK Irish EBF Champion Mares Hurdle the feature highlight on Festival Saturday, the final day of the 2026 Punchestown Festival with the first race going to post at 2.30pm.

Second in last year’s renewal, SQUIRE OHARA might be able to go one better on his second Rules start for Ian Donoghue The Milan gelding ran creditably behind some of the leading hunterchasers at Down Royal over Christmas, and a recent point-point outing should have him primed for this assignment. Hearts And Spades has been a prolific winner in point-to-points this season, and may be suited by dropping back in trip having raced keenly when third on his hunter-chase debut over 3m at Cork. Last Round has solid hunter-chase form and may be more suited by this trip than Asphalt Cowboy who has won over a mile farther and is now tried in blinkers. WIN: SQUIRE OHARA

Willie Mullins runs eight and Paul Townend has gone with FUNICULI FUNICULA who comes here a fresh horse after a light campaign. He has been progressive in three starts over fences, and gave the impression when winning at Cork that stepping back up to 2m4f would suit. Spread Boss Ted has been lightly raced since finishing fourth in the Albert Bartlett two years ago and could have more to offer after a first chase win at Naas, while the form of Noble Park’s victory at Newbury has worked out well and this appears to be his optimum trip Raglan Road improved for better ground when winning at Down Royal and has Harry Cobden’s assistance. Runner-up in a bumper here last season, he is lightly raced having had just the five career starts. Triumph Hurdle fifth Lord Byron improved for the step up to this trip when a staying-on fourth at Aintree In receipt of weight, the UK raider holds leading claims. Jalon D’oudairies should be better suited to this trip having failed to fire in the Albert Bartlett.

In contrast to the Punchestown Gold Cup and the Champion Stayers Hurdle, horses who have won the equivalent race at the Cheltenham Festival boast a fine record in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle Introduced in its current format in 1999, the first renewal was won by the legendary Istabraq, whilst the likes of Moscow Flyer, Hardy Eustace, Brave Inca, Faugheen, Honeysuckle and State Man all feature among an illustrious roll of honour
GRADE 1
PRIZE MONEY
€300,000
7 of the past 8 Champion Hurdle winners to have run have won

20 of the last 26 winners had won at Punchestown previously
State Man looked back to his best when only a last-flight fall denied him a second Champion Hurdle victory at Cheltenham, and he reinforced that impression with a faultless performance back on home soil. Allowed to dictate on his own terms, he readily shrugged off his pursuers before the last under a confident ride from Paul Townend. This was his twelfth Grade 1 success, and he is now six wins from seven here at Punchestown. Golden Ace once again outran her odds at 14/1 to finish a good second.
Fan favourite Lossiemouth looks to round off another incredible season, following up her Champion Hurdle success by landing a fourth Grade 1 of the campaign. Golden Ace returns seeking redemption after finding only State Man too strong in last year’s renewal. Both receive a handy 7lb allowance and could give the males plenty to worry about. Course-and-distance winner William Munny makes his belated seasonal debut, having last been seen finishing second in the Supreme Anzadam will be looking to keep the streak alive in the famous black-andyellow silks, while County Hurdle winner Wilful must prove he has what it takes at the highest level.
Last year’s winner: State Man

Champion Hurdle winner LOSSIEMOUTH can maintain her unbeaten record at this track. Having landed the Champion Four Year Old Hurdle three seasons ago, the Willie Mullinstrained grey returned to take the Mares Champion Hurdle a year later An emphatic winner of the Morgiana here on her reappearance, the seven-year-old clearly has a liking for Punchestown. Relatively fresh for this stage of the season, it will be a major surprise if she fails to add a fourth course victory. County Hurdle winner Wilful should be suited to racing prominently in a small field, while William Munny is interesting if ready after a long absence. WIN: LOSSIEMOUTH
EACH-WAY: WILFUL
Leading course trainer (20-25): W P Mullins (185 wins from 752 runners, 25%) runs ABSURDE, ANZADAM & LOSSIEMOUTH
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): W P Mullins (6 wins from 30 runners, 20%)

Fancy That: W P Mullins won this race in 2016, 2017, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The stable runs ABSURDE, ANZADAM & LOSSIEMOUTH today.
You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses ’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Punchestown may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Punchestown but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Punchestown and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders, you can identify which horses run well here at Punchestown and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

ARSLAN is a speculative suggestion in a competitive affair Consistent throughout his short career to date, the Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old caught the eye on his recent handicap debut, staying on late to finish seventh in a big field at Fairyhouse Sure to have benefited from that first experience of handicaps, the son of Wootton Bassett may be able to step forward enough to land this prize. Trainer Noel Kelly has been among the winners of late and High Court Cave is not without his chance, despite being off the track since September Better ground will certainly suit the lightly-raced gelding. UK raider Spirou has to enter calculations for the Harry Derham team.
WIN: ARSLAN

Fancy That: J P Dempsey won this race in 2022 and 2023. The stable runs DEE’S LADY today. Longest Traveller: HIGH COURT CAVE trained by N Kelly, Derry, 170 miles.
After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.
For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.
The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
Punchestown is the only racecourse in Ireland that hosts cross-country racing over 35 obstacles styled on natural countryside fences, banks and hedges.
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3
Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4
