WELCOME

WELCOME TO

Dear Friends Of Punchestown,

On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to the opening day of the 2026 Punchestown Festival, William Hill Champion Chase Day.

The Punchestown Festival is a massive event that ignites local pride and captures national attention. A celebration over 5 days for the culmination of the jumps season boasting 12 Grade 1 races and a record prize fund of over €3.6 million in 2026 drawing champions, dreamers and crowds from far and wide With a reputation which brings both responsibility and pressure to deliver perfect jumping ground It is Ireland’s largest corporate hospitality event, where top class racing meets the glamour of fashion, the joy of entertainment and creates special moments and memories that last a lifetime But beyond the numbers, the prestige and the spectacle - Punchestown is more than that, Punchestown is special, Punchestown is tradition.

Our key focus is to instil that tradition so that the business continues to evolve and grow so that we safeguard Punchestown for the generations to come We were also delighted to be recognised as Racecourse of the Year in Ireland in 2025 following a hugely successful year This would simply not be possible without the support of each and every one of you and the integral part you play in continuing the Punchestown tradition, Thank You.

A thrilling renewal of the Grade 1 €300,000 William Hill Champion Chase takes centre stage as the feature race on day one. I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank the team at William Hill and indeed all of our commercial partners today and indeed throughout the week for your invaluable support. Without your involvement it wouldn’t be possible for us to attract and showcase the very best jump racing stars on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season.

Following on from a hugely successful festival in 2025 where we had a phenomenal 66 UK horses, we’re delighted to see such an array of notable entries yet again from the UK bidding to renew rivalries on Irish soil. The UK involvement is a long-standing tradition and such an integral part of our festival This has been bolstered with the Albert Bartlett Triple Crown Series. An initiative consisting of 12 qualifiers, dispersed throughout the UK and Ireland, culminating in a €100,000 final which takes place at the Punchestown Festival today. We sincerely thank Ronnie, Alex and the team at Albert Bartlett and all UK Trainers, Owners, Jockeys and Racing Enthusiasts for making the extra effort to travel to Punchestown and we wish you a very enjoyable stay

The next five days really are something to savour, and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for you all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and I hope you have a few winners as well!

I look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow for more exhilarating action with the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Gold Cup the feature highlight on Day 2 which the first race going to post at 2.30pm.

Kindest Regards

The Kildare Hunt Club and the Punchestown team welcome you to the opening day of the 2026 Punchestown National Hunt Festival.

Last year, we shared a truly special occasion as we celebrated 175 years of racing history here at the home of Irish jump racing. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the generations of racing enthusiasts who laid the foundations of this great festival. With our rich heritage now proudly acknowledged, this year we turn our eyes firmly toward the future and writing the next great chapter of the Punchestown legacy.

Building on that celebration of our past, we wanted to ensure we are also preserving our present. A magnificent new set of paintings, commissioned from the renowned equine artist Peter Curling, has now been completed. These works beautifully capture and reflect Punchestown in its current, vibrant format for generations to come. I encourage you all to take a moment to view these wonderful pieces, which will be proudly on display throughout the festival.

A racecourse is only as strong as the community that surrounds it, and the heartbeat of this festival has always been its people. Over the next five days, we are thrilled to welcome patrons from across Kildare, throughout Ireland, and the thousands of overseas visitors who make the annual pilgrimage to join us. The friendly but fierce Anglo-Irish rivalry on the track is matched only by the incredible camaraderie in the enclosures, making this week the ultimate grand finale of the National Hunt season.

The Punchestown Roll of Honour the most prestigious award reserved to recognise people who have made an outstanding contribution and played a pivotal role in supporting the success of Punchestown over the years will be presented to J.P & Noreen McManus together with William Durkan as a mark for their continued support over many, many years. We have a spectacular week of top-tier competition ahead, starting with the undeniable thrills of today's feature races. We extend our deepest gratitude to the owners, trainers, jockeys, and stable staff whose tireless dedication ensures we witness the very best equine athletes in the world right here in Kildare.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable 2026 Punchestown Festival.

RACE SUMMARY

Despite having something to prove at this stage, WILLITGOAHEAD looks a class apart here. Third at the Cheltenham Festival last year, the Gordon Elliott-trained gelding has failed to reach those heights this term. However, the eight-year-old shaped with enough promise when second at Down Royal in December to suggest he should be good enough to land a race of this nature. He needs to bounce back from two subsequent disappointments, but is capable of doing so Fountain House was well behind in that Down Royal contest, but has won his last three point-to-points. Ian McCarthy’s charge looks a leading contender now. Keep On Dreaming has to be respected given his connections. WIN: WILLITGOAHEAD

RACE SUMMARY

Runner-up in this race last year, ALMUHIT is likely to have been laid out for a repeat bid. Making his stable debut on that occasion, the Faye Bramley-trained gelding flashed home late to take minor honours. Well handicapped relative to his rating on the Flat, the seven-year-old appears to have more scope for improvement this term and the booking of Harry Cobden certainly catches the eye. A dual winner at this track, Powerful was eighth in a stronger race at Fairyhouse recently Although quick ground would be a slight concern, he looks a leading player. Laughing John, who beat Almuhit at Wincanton in February, also holds strong claims for the raiding party

RACE SUMMARY

With the ground coming in her favour, MURCIA has every chance of gaining a first victory of the campaign. A Grade 1 winner at Aintree last season, the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old has run with credit in a number of big handicaps this term. Down the field in the County Hurdle on her penultimate start, the daughter of Doctor Dino ran a big race when fifth at Fairyhouse last time Imperial Cup third We’re Red And Blue is another proven performer in these big fields. Runner-up at Haydock recently, he should again be involved Jet To Monte Carlo, an impressive winner at Fairyhouse, commands maximum respect, despite a 9lb rise

RACE SUMMARY

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle fifth EL CAIROS can record a first win at the highest level. A smart bumper horse last season, the No Risk At All gelding was an unlucky loser when falling at the final flight on his stable/hurdling debut at Leopardstown over Christmas. Off the mark in a maiden hurdle at Thurles subsequently, he was far from disgraced when doing best of the Irish raiding party in the Cheltenham Festival curtain-raiser Leopardstown Grade 1 winner Skylight Hustle can be forgiven a below-par effort at Cheltenham given that he ran too free, and dropping back in trip should suit. Smart Flat horse Sober also deserves another chance after a poor Festival run. WIN: EL CAIROS

RACE SUMMARY

Brown Advisory winner KITZBUHEL can double up here for Willie Mullins. A Grade 1 winner at Kempton over Christmas, the five-year-old may appreciate going back right-handed after his Cheltenham Festival victory. While he undoubtedly had to pull out all the stops to beat a stablemate last month, he should go well if over those exertions. Fleur In The Park was an outsider when winning a Fairyhouse Grade 1 but fully deserved his success on the day and shouldn’t be underestimated Western Fold would be a threat to all if recapturing his best form.

RACE SUMMARY

With the benefit of previous experience, Gowran Park runner-up HUNTIN BOOTS can go one place better Although the Gordon Elliott-trained gelding proved no match for the winner on that occasion, he’s entitled to have come forward plenty and has that significant advantage over the majority of his rivals. Elliott has a particularly strong team of bumper horses this term and, with Harry Swan in the saddle, he looks the stable first string. The Martin Brassil-trained newcomer Abbeyglen has to be respected given his connections often target a nice horse at this race Altesse Du Luy is an obvious contender with Patrick Mullins taking the ride WIN: HUNTIN BOOTS

16 of the past 22 winners have contested the Champion Chase at Cheltenham

After his emphatic 18-length victory in the Champion Chase, Marine Nationale completed the prestigious Cheltenham–Punchestown double in impressive fashion. Fact To File attracted strong market support following his dominant Ryanair success, but failed to make an impact, leaving the race open for Sean Flanagan and Marine Nationale The task was eased further when El Fabiolo fell at the second last, and Marine Nationale powered clear after the final fence to defeat Captain Guinness by seven lengths, firmly establishing himself at the top of the two-mile chasing division.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Last year’s winner Marine Nationale lines up again in the five-strong field to defend his crown. Barry Connell reaches for the first time cheekpieces after he was defeated in the Dublin Chase at Leopardstown. Il Etait Temps couldn’t have been more impressive for the Willie Mullins team at Cheltenham after he bolted up by 10 lengths in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and had the re-opposing Majborough well held A repeat of that performance would see him be hard to beat. Mullins also saddles the veteran Energumene and the rank outsider Blood Destiny who will both need to bring their A-game to get competitive.

Last year’s winner: Marine Nationale GRADE 1

RACE SUMMARY

Fresher than most at this point of the season, MARINE NATIONALE can follow up last year’s win in this race Narrowly denied on his seasonal reappearance at Leopardstown over Christmas, the Barry Connell-trained gelding arguably found the ground too testing when well beaten at the DRF With a minor setback ruling him out of Cheltenham, the son of French Navy should be primed for this big late-season prize. Champion Chase winner Il Etait Temps is the obvious danger Three from four this term, the grey has been impressive aside from one below-par run at Ascot Majborough remains a horse with huge ability when putting it all together on the day. WIN: MARINE NATIONALE EACH-WAY: IL ETAIT TEMPS

RACE SUMMARY

A half-sister to two black type performers, the Nicky Henderson-trained PRETTY FORTUNATE catches the eye. With the stable having run some smart bumper horses at this meeting over the years and the booking of Declan Lavery catching the eye, she is given a speculative vote Sent off favourite when third at Naas in January, Hartford shouldn’t be far away Previous experience is a huge advantage in these races and trainer Gordon Elliott has a strong team of bumper horses. Navan second Bunker Buster is entitled to come on for that effort, while Delamotte and Teofil are debutants who enter calculations. WIN: PRETTY FORTUNATE
