WELCOME

WELCOME TO

Dear Friends Of Punchestown,

On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to Day 3 of the 2026 Punchestown Festival, Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle Day.

The Punchestown Festival is a massive event that ignites local pride and captures national attention. A celebration over 5 days for the culmination of the jumps season boasting 12 Grade 1 races and a record prize fund of over €3.6 million in 2026 drawing champions, dreamers and crowds from far and wide With a reputation which brings both responsibility and pressure to deliver perfect jumping ground It is Ireland’s largest corporate hospitality event, where top class racing meets the glamour of fashion, the joy of entertainment and creates special moments and memories that last a lifetime But beyond the numbers, the prestige and the spectacle - Punchestown is more than that, Punchestown is special, Punchestown is tradition.

Our key focus is to instil that tradition so that the business continues to evolve and grow so that we safeguard Punchestown for the generations to come We were also delighted to be recognised as Racecourse of the Year in Ireland in 2025 following a hugely successful year This would simply not be possible without the support of each and every one of you and the integral part you play in continuing the Punchestown tradition, Thank You.

Festival Thursday is all about stamina as the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle takes centre stage on day three. I would like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our commercial partners today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. Without your involvement it wouldn’t be possible for us to attract and showcase the very best jump racing stars on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season.

Today also features the famous Mongey Communications Cross Country Chase for the La Touche Cup which is one of the highlights of the year at Punchestown and a spectator favourite. Punchestown boasts the only cross-country course in Ireland, a race over four miles with 35 obstacles to be encountered it’s certainly hard to believe that this race often produces the tightest of finishes. This year’s renewal is also the penultimate leg of the prestigious Crystal Cup and we welcome those who have travelled from across Europe for that in particular

The Goffs Punchestown Sale is scheduled to take place this evening after racing in the fitting location of the Punchestown winner’s enclosure. A select number of top bumper and point to point winners who have impressed over the last number of weeks will go under the hammer to the leading trainers, owners and bloodstock agents in the industry. It’s a fantastic spectacle and we look forward to welcoming many of them back to the winner’s enclosure at Punchestown as their careers continue

The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour, and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and hopefully you get a few winners as well!

RACE SUMMARY

LEADER D’ALLIER can end a somewhat frustrating season on a winning note A five-time scorer in his native France, the Willie Mullins-trained gelding made a satisfactory Irish debut at Leopardstown over Christmas, at a time when his stable wasn’t firing on all cylinders. An impressive winner at this circuit next time, the five-year-old had been a Supreme Novices’ Hurdle contender before suffering a last-minute setback. Although well beaten at Fairyhouse earlier this month, a bad mistake three out all but ended his chances and he can show his true ability here. Royal Bond fourth Gameball has to be a strong candidate on his first start since November Unbeaten in a point-to-point, a bumper and a maiden hurdle, Nadia’’s Boy also holds claims. RACE SUMMARY

FUTURE PROSPECT is a tentative selection in a race where Willie Mullins holds a strong hand

An easy winner at Naas in January, the Order Of St George mare failed to fire when pulled up at Cheltenham next time out. However, that was almost certainly not her true running and she proved as much when fourth in a Grade 1 at the Fairyhouse Easter Festival recently Stablemate Diamond Du Berlais made a winning debut for Mullins at Ludlow before finishing an excellent sixth in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. A reproduction of that effort would make her hard to beat. The third Mullins representative Blue Velvet is also not without her chance. WIN: FUTURE PROSPECT

RACE SUMMARY

Runner-up last year, DESERTMORE HOUSE can go one place better In front when a mistake at the last arguably cost him the race, the Martin Brassil-trained gelding returned here to easily land the Risk Of Thunder Chase in November Although only eighth in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham, the 11-year-old should appreciate returning to this venue. Defending champion Busselton deserves plenty of respect in his bid to follow up He hasn’t been in the same form this year, but a recent switch to ‘banks king’ Enda Bolger could help rejuvenate the nine-year-old Cheltenham third Vanillier is another former winner at this track and is not without his chance.

RACE SUMMARY

Leinster National winner THE LOVELY MAN looks well treated on his return to hurdling. Gavin Cromwell’s seven-year-old is a versatile sort who followed up a chase win at Navan in December by scoring over flights at Gowran Park. Given that he appears to have progressed again since his most recent run over the smaller obstacles, he should be a leading contender Recent Fairyhouse runner-up Blue Mosque is a strong traveller who sees out her races well and the Noel Meade-trained mare is unlikely to be far away Duke Silver ran a bit below par at Aintree last time but, on his Cheltenham sixth, he would hold every chance.

The Kapgarde gelding really blossomed under front-running tactics at Leopardstown early last month when a cosy winner He beat the reopposing Come Walk With Me, who went on to score at Fairyhouse, and he is actually a few pounds better off now. RACE SUMMARY

KOPEK DES BORDES looked like an unlucky loser at Cheltenham last month and should prove hard to beat. The No Risk At All gelding swooped through to lead in the Arkle, but pecked at the final fence and couldn’t pick up again as stablemate Kargese rallied to land the spoils. That was only his second chase start and he’s entitled to improve Irish Panther ran a fine race in the Champion Chase and may have been closer but for a bad mistake at the last. He’s the danger Salvator Mundi didn’t jump with any great fluency in Aintree, but is talented and another to consider WIN: KOPEK DES BORDES EACH-WAY: IRISH PANTHER

FEATURE LADBROKES STAYERS’ HURDLE

FACTS & STATS

OVERVIEW

The Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham is often a pointer towards the Champion Stayers, which was first run in 1995. The only horse to win both races was Anzum way back in 1999 until Teahupoo completed the double in 2024 Many horses with strong form over the minimum trip step up in distance to win today’s feature, so keep a keen eye on these. Willie Mullins has won the race a record 10 times, with the almighty Klassical Dream taking three renewals.

Derrymoyle (1995, 1996 & 1998), Unowhatimeanharry and Teahupoo are another multiple winners.

KEY TRENDS

PRIZE MONEY

€300,000

Only three winning favourites in the last 10 years

14 of the past 15 Irishtrained winners had won at Punchestown previously

11 of the past 16 winners had won just once earlier in the season

The 2025 renewal proved a routine affair for Teahupoo, who stamped his authority on the staying hurdle division with a polished display over his 10 other rivals. The race was steadily-run early before developing into a sprint from the home turn. Travelling strongly in behind, he hurdled fluently throughout and cruised into contention approaching two from home He quickened to lead before the last and soon put this field to the sword, drawing clear of Asterion Forlonge, with Jetara staying on into third. This success showcased the eight-year-olds professionalism, bouncing back from a minor defeat at Cheltenham from stablemate Bob Olinger.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Teahupoo sets out to emulate Klassical Dream by completing a hat-trick in the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle and the ground should be no issue here. Gordon Elliott opts for first-time blinkers on his leading stayer, who is preferred over stablemate Honesty Policy Robcour also rely on Bob Olinger who overturned Teahupoo in last season’s Stayer’s Hurdle at Cheltenham, though he must show he retains all his ability at 11. Willie Mullins is represented by Kawaboomga and Jimmy Du Seuil as he bids to extend his fine record in the contest, while Jetara and Meet And Greet complete a competitive field of eight.

Last year’s winner: Teahupoo

RACE SUMMARY

TEAHUPOO can land his hat-trick in this event. He got outpaced a bit in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on the run to the second last and Gordon Elliott is hoping that the application of blinkers now can help him travel better He’s the class act on the pick of his form. Old rival Bob Olinger, who carries the same colours, was a fine third at Cheltenham and retains plenty of ability He looks like an obvious danger, while Honesty Policy is next best.

RACE SUMMARY

QUIRYN ran really well at Cheltenham, considering how keenly he raced, and looks the one to beat here. He was in Paul Townend’s hands the whole way last month but was bang there a furlong from home before fading a touch late on to finish sixth. It was a big effort and he remains a very exciting prospect. c looked like a nice sort when scoring on his debut at Leopardstown. Barry Stone takes a useful 7lb off his back and he could play a big part. Soul Asylum is another for the shortlist.
