MONDAY 26TH JANUARY 2026

WELCOME

Welcome to Plumpton - January Jumps Raceday

A warm welcome back to Plumpton and from all the team we wish you a belated Happy New Year. We were so disappointed to have to abandon The BetGoodwin Sussex National and despite the huge efforts of our grounds team covering the whole track with covers, the low temperatures just got the better of us. We are though extremely pleased to be able to announce that the Sussex National will now be run on Easter Sunday and the Sussex Stayers on Sussex Raceday, Sunday 19th April.

With today being our first meeting of 2026, I would like to thank our partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Kalm Kitchen for their tremendous support throughout 2025. Along with today’s sponsors, Howden Insurance brokers, The Legendary Jimmy James 90th Birthday group and Tysers Insurance brokers , we hope that you have a great day. We have a lovely 7 race card with competitive fields today and £80,000 in prize money. Our feature race is the Southern Cranes Handicap Hurdle at 250 but look out for some intriguing runners in both our maiden hurdle at 120 and novice hurdle at 150. Certainly, some horses for the notebook.

Our next two fixtures are on Monday 9th February when we welcome The Bentswood Hub for their first charity day with us and then on Monday 23rd February we host our inaugural Jamies Farm Raceday. Both racedays support well-known and local charities and if you want to know more, please keep posted through our social media channels. If you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for either day then make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team.

Don’t forget to put the Plumpton Racecourse Easter Festival in your diaries, which will be held on Sunday 5th April and Monday 6th April, by booking now you will secure our best ticket prices as this is our most popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

Have a lovely day at Plumpton, Heart Of Our Community.

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins.

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Parade ring - The area of a racecourse where horses are paraded before each race.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race.

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race.

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

Keep an eye on Alan Bresil now connections try their gelding in first-time cheekpieces, but CATCH ON ME is the one to beat. Despite a pretty quiet season by Venetia Williams’ standards, her gelding won’t get many better opportunities than this and it was a lot better last time out in a Uttoxeter handicap. Quay Item is another to take seriously.

totewin: Catch On Me

toteeachway: Alan Bresil

3

AMBIENTE FRIENDLY finished

runner-up in the 2024 Derby and must have a big chance here if punters can look past one lacklustre effort in a Huntingdon handicap last time. Before that, he won in this company on soft ground and the second has recently franked the form by winning impressively at Lingfield. He makes more appeal than Looping D’arc and Reteti.

totewin: Ambiente Friendly

toteeachway: Looping D’arc

SUPERSTYLIN should prove tough to beat in this handicap chase. He gained the success his previous form deserved at Fontwell on Boxing Day and he’s performed well at this track before. Sanitiser needs a bit more but has the form in the book to at least keep the selection honest, while Sea Thrift could be the one for third place.

totewin: Superstylin

toteeachway: Sanitiser

Good To Be Alive has been running well without getting his head in front on both starts in handicap company and a stiffer track may play to the strengths of Olly Murphy’s gelding. Lucky Manifest didn’t appear to stay 3m when sent off favourite at Cheltenham and commands plenty of respect back over a more suitable trip, but the vote goes to IKE SPORT. The eight-year-old wasn’t at all disgraced when finishing sixth in the Lanzarote at Kempton earlier in the month and he has every chance off the same mark.

totewin: Ike Sport

toteeachway: Good To Be Alive

EITHER OR tried chasing on her return to action at Warwick before switching straight back to the smaller obstacles and winning on her first attempt over 3m at Doncaster. Unexposed over staying distances, a 5lb rise appears unlikely to stop Nicky Henderson’s mare from taking another step forward. Tankardstown Diva returns to hurdling after falling at Fakenham just before Christmas and is noted along with Getaway Theatre.

totewin: Either Or

toteeachway: Tankardstown Diva

Only a tentative vote can go to GEORGES SAINT. The 10-year-old hinted at a revival when third at Warwick on New Year’s Eve and is likely to go close if able to build on that performance. Minella Blueway didn’t make it past the first fence at Ascot but drops in class and is appealing nonetheless, while it would be dangerous to rule out Shantou Lucky, who won over C&D as recently as November.

totewin: Georges Saint

toteeachway: Minella Blueway

FRANK STAMPER has shown a glimmer of ability in a couple of juvenile hurdles so far but, switched to handicaps for the first time, we may now see much better from him. Andy Irvine saddles two in Ephyra and Suzy Wood, both of whom will need to be monitored in the betting, and Warwick maiden winner Our Papa Smurf could bounce back.

totewin: Frank Stamper

toteeachway: Ephyra
