WELCOME Welcome to The Racehorse Sanctuary Raceday Our fourth fixture of the season and I would like to welcome you to The Racehorse Sanctuary Raceday. The Racehorse Sanctuary and Rehoming Centre is based in Pulborough, West Sussex and provides a lifeline for horses who need time to adjust to a life after racing. As one of the leading organisations in this field, its work is vital to thoroughbred welfare and through their rehabilitation, retraining and sanctuary programmes can give ex-racehorses a second chance in life in the form of a number of equine disciplines; hacking, eventing, dressage, showjumping or even as a companion. We have already had a great start to the season welcoming many thousands of people and seeing some fantastic horses and close finishes. We are sure today will be equally as exciting and I thank you for your continued support. I would like to thank our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Booked It, Cranbrook Underwriting, the Family of Mik Tubb, C.P.J Field and the Family of Andrew Rabjohns. We wish you all have a tremendous day. We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 49 runners declared worth over £84,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our third race the £27,500 Class 3 The Mik Tubb ‘Uncle Eli’ Memorial Novices Ltd Handicap Chase which was won last year by Brief Times, trained by Neil Mulholland and ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies. The renewal this year looks strong with 5 going to post. We also have The Royal Yeomanry Association Amateur Jockeys Handicap Hurdle where we have a total of 9 going to post. We have pleasure in welcoming C Squadron, Royal Yeomanry. You will see several troops around the site along with a jackal vehicle that will be positioned outside the Final Fence Restaurant, so please visit and find out more about the Squadron. Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have Pete the Feat, who has enjoyed an accomplished career with 47 runs, 11 wins and 12 placings. He has run at Plumpton 9 times winning once, beating Beware Chalk Pit by 12 lengths. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat. Our next fixtures will be our two Christmas fixtures on Monday 4th and Monday 18th December, so we hope to see many of you back here for the Christmas Parties as there is always such a great atmosphere both on and off the track, with the Christmas jumpers, live music, hot chestnuts, free candy cain for everyone and competitive racing. CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Unauthorised Bookmaking It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Abandonments In the event of a fixture being abandoned, refunds on admission badges and tickets purchased will be paid in the following circumstances: Abandonment before completion of the first race - full refund; Abandonment before completion of the third race - 50% refund; Abandonment thereafter - no refund. In the event that a refund is due, refunds can not be made on racedays. BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling. 1.

Pick your winner! There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. - Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. - Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. – With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. – At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off . – Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4? Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner. The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Oﬃcial BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suﬃcient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE 1

All The Glory recorded a double in the summer and has match-fitness on his side, while Flidais ran well in second over 2m here last month, but they may be playing for second place behind SHANAGH BOB. The son of Mahler was purchased for 200,000 pounds following an impressive point-to-point success 11 months ago and Nicky Henderson will have his sights on much loftier targets later in the season for his five-year-old. RACE 2

This represent a big drop in class for HIAOU on his debut for Chris Gordon after the six-yearold was well beaten in a competitive Leopardstown contest on his chasing bow for Gordon Elliott in the spring. He is well clear on official ratings as he reverts to hurdles and may prove too strong for Saligo Bay, who finished a long way clear of the third when runner-up in a selling handicap hurdle earlier in the month. Iddergem won a four-runner affair in this grade over 2m2f at Stratford earlier in the month and is another to consider in first-time cheekpieces. totewin: Hiaou toteeachway: Saligo Bay

RACE 3

GENERAL MEDRANO has relished the switch to larger obstacles and made it 2-2 over fences when taking a 7lb rise in his stride to win well at Huntingdon three weeks ago. Emma Lavelle’s gelding has gone up another 9lb for that victory but remains on an upward curve and this step up in trip could unlock further improvement. Brave Kingdom has won two of his three starts over hurdles and is interesting on his handicap debut for Paul Nicholls, but it is nearly two years since we have seen him on a racecourse. The lack of a recent run also tempers enthusiasm for Ree Okka, but he mixed it in good company last season and must be respected. totewin: General Medrano toteeachway: Brave Kingdom

RACE 4

EDE’IFFS ROCK has finished second on both starts over hurdles so far at Warwick and Newton Abbot. The five-year-old now switches her attention to handicap company where it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her take a step forward. Duhallow Tommy is likely to improve from his latest effort at Fontwell, while Afta Party and Birdman Bob appear best of the remainder. totewin: Ede’iffs Rock toteeachway: Duhallow Tommy

RAGAMUFFIN displayed signs of a return to form when third over C&D earlier in the month and Neil Mulholland’s gelding could take advantage of what doesn’t appear to be a particularly strong contest, especially with the handicapper leaving him on the same mark. Stanley Pincombe filled the runner-up spot on his return from a break at Exeter and is open to improvement. RACE 6

NO RISK WITH LOU jumped with great fluency when winning on his chasing debut last month and an 8lb rise might not be enough to stop Alex Hales’ charge from following up. The chief threat might come in the form of Gitche Gumee, who showed a consistent level of form over hurdles last season and he is likely to appreciate the switch to fences. Kotmask is unlikely to go down without a fight, while Aviles should not be underestimated either. totewin: No Risk With Lou toteeachway: Gitche Gumee

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

With little pace on offer in this field, SAN PEDRO could repeat the tactics that saw him make all at Fontwell in May. The market suggested better was expected on last month’s return, but he can take a step forward with that run under his belt. Baby Sham was far from disgraced over track and trip last time and Seamus Mullins’ mare could fare better on her second start following wind surgery. LAST MEETING REVIEW

The meeting began with a mares’ maiden which went the way of the Sheena West-trained A Tickatickatiming who just prevailed by a neck in a fabulous finish. A bumper winner who has shown she can be just as effective over hurdles, she posted her best effort to date here, getting up in the closing stages. Goodtimecrew appreciated the drop in class but had to settle for second, but the pair drew well-clear of the remainder of the field and both could prove useful in this division. Devine Connection was the one found in thew market and was going well for most of the race before being outpaced four from home and could only finish third. Joe Tizzard continued his strong start to the season as he saddle West Orchard to victory in the hands of Sean Bowen who made all. He put his best foot forward here off only a mark of 78 and blew this field away by four lengths, with Proper Twelve back in second. 11 went to post for our third race but Bryony Frost and Paul Nicholls teamed up for victory on Emailandy. Sent off a 7/1 after showing some fair form in bumpers last term, he took the step up in trip right in his stride and the wind op towards the end of last season clearly worked its magic. He forged home with ease here by nine and a half lengths and proved too strong for his rivals. Our feature race of the day was a 0-140 handicap hurdle which looked very competitive on paper. Forever William got the job complete however, in the hands of Tom Cannon, who always kept his mount up with the pace. He completed his third hurdling success here, battling well at the home stretch, to fend off the late challenges of Monjules and Mr Freedom. The fifth of the seven races was one for the staying chasers over the three miles and one and half furlongs won by the 11/2 shot Blade Runner. Up 6lb for a win last time out, he took his record over fences to 5-6 (four of them gained here) with his best effort to date. He stayed on well and proved he goes on all goings. I See you Well outrun his odds to finish second and Midnight Mary completed the podium. Joe Tizzard completed a double on the day as he saddles West End Boy to victory. With handy 7lb Freddie Gingell in the saddle, he followed up his win on handicap debut to score with more in hand than the result suggested, winning by three lengths. He was a short favourite but made light work of this an will now progress up the handicap ranks. Our finale went to Baddesley who appreciated having 5lb off his back with Freddie Gordon in the saddle. Albeit blundering the first, he took the lead from four out and was not for stopping here. Copshill Lad but up the biggest fight but had to settle for second and length back. Ragamuffin finished third but will be looking to gain victory here today as he reopposes.

The Royal Yeomanry is the senior light Cavalry regiment in the Army and their commanding officer Lt Colonel Charles Field has generously sponsored the race through his firm CPJ Field. I was approached earlier in the year to see if we could run a race to include military riders as a preparation for the Grand Military meeting at Sandown which is now being run on January 26th. We were delighted to assist the Grand Military Race Committee, which is Chaired by my good regimental friend Lt General Sir Barnabas White-Spunner, with whom I served in The Blues and Royals in the 1970s. We hope they have an enjoyable day and that the race will become a permanent fixture in the Plumpton calendar.

The Royal Yeomanry is the South East’s Reserve Cavalry Regiment. The largest and most active Army Reserve regiment, training Reserve soldiers in mounted and dismounted close combat skills in order to support the Household Cavalry, 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards and the Royal Lancers. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. Commemorating Andrew Rabjohns

From an early interest in racehorses as a boy, in his 20s he started at Ladbrokes and worked in the horse racing industry for 35+ years. He spent leisure, as well as work time, immersed in horse racing, often going to Plumpton, Cheltenham and Sandown. Plumpton was a favourite. Andrew celebrated turning sixty a year ago at The Melbourne Cup, before sadly passing away in April. It’s a pleasure to remember Andrew here today, and to share his passion for horse racing with his friends and family.
