We are delighted to welcome you back to Perth Racecourse as we get Day 2 of the 2026 Perth Festival underway, one of three thrilling days that launch our season in spectacular style.
The Festival continues to bring together leading trainers and jockeys from across the UK and Ireland, delivering top-class National Hunt racing alongside a fantastic social atmosphere here at Scone Palace.
Today promises another superb afternoon of competitive racing, set against the vibrant and sociable spirit of Tweed & Tartan Day, making it a truly special occasion both on and off the track. Make sure you stay for the ceilidh in The Barn after racing – live music from Ragin’ Ceilidh!
We are extremely grateful for the support of all of today’s sponsors, including Stonepack, Racing TV and Scone Palace International Horse Trials. Their continued backing plays a vital role in helping us deliver racing of the highest quality
A special mention goes to Scone Palace International Horse Trials, Scotland’s newest equestrian event, taking place later this summer for the second year at Scone Palace and Perth Racecourse -tickets are available now at sconehorsetrials.com.
Our thanks also go to all the owners, trainers, jockeys, and stable staff for bringing such exciting talent to the track today and for choosing to race at Perth during our Festival.
Finally, a very warm welcome to all of our racegoers, whether you are joining us for the first time or returning once again, we are delighted to have you here. Enjoy the racing, soak up the atmosphere, and we wish you the very best of luck throughout the day.

Star Ratings Explained
Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating. This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160. Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g. 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range.
HURDLE RACES
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently. At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course. Eight are jumped in a two mile race nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.
STEEPLE CHASES
Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch. When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6” There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’. An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course. Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.
WEIGHT FOR AGE RACES
These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability to run in a Handicap. These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race

Horse Welfare
Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
No Smoking
Smoking or vaping is not permitted in any enclosed public places within Perth Racecourse It is an offence to smoke or knowingly to permit smoking in any enclosed areas of the Racecourse and where you see the no smoking sign.
New Claiming Procedures

Irish challenger DUNSY ROCK has to concede weight all round but still looks the way to go on the back of an emphatic Fairyhouse success with this longer trip also a plus. Nicky Henderson’s Viscountess Nelson made a promising start in this sphere when runner-up at Plumpton and rates the main danger ahead of the selection’s stablemate Celtic Alliance.
GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME
The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

HORSE WELFARE
Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse

PLAY SMARTER
Having shaped like a non-stayer in the Ulster National last month, SLANAGAIBHGOLEIR is fancied to continue his good work over fences with Cobden taking over returned to a more suitable trip. He can double his tally at the expense of Tommy’s Oscar, who has been in good order of late and can have his latest effort in Grade 2 company ignored. Toothless has found one too strong in 5 of his 8 starts over fences and can add another placing to his CV here.
