A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL FROM ALL THE TEAM HERE AT NEWTON ABBOT RACECOURSE FOR OUR AUGUST SATURDAY FIXTURE. YOUR SUPPORT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND VALUED, AND WE HOPE YOU ALL HAVE AN ENJOYABLE AND SUCCESSFUL DAY’S RACING WITH US.
Our thanks very much go to our sponsors here today, who are our very own on-course bookmakers who provide so much colour and atmosphere to a day’s racing here, the family of Aubrey Loze who we remember as a fantastic character and driving force for this racecourse, Harry & Peg celebrating their 25th Wedding Anniversary and the friends and families of John Price and Eoin Mullen who we fondly remember today. Also with us are the Devon Air Ambulance who have a stand here today near to Alfrescos, please do pay them a visit. We hope all our supporters and their guests have a great day.
As today falls in National Racehorse Week, we are delighted to welcome the equine superstar and local hero that is Frodon. Our thanks go to Jimmy Frost and connections for bringing Frodon today where we celebrate his fantastic career He will be stabled in our temporary stable adjacent to Alfrescos and please do go and say hello, he loves any attention. He will also be parading before our first race today so make sure you’re around the Parade Ring for that.
Today make sure you stay after racing has finished. The brilliant local band Harbour playing some great tunes in the Paddock Bar after racing (everyone welcome to join the party, room capacity allowing) and we will also be showing England’s Rugby World Cup game against Samoa on screens through the racecourse, that game kicking off at 5pm.
Hopefully you were here early enough to take advantage of the free pint of Tribute Ale that was available for the first hour from gates opening, our thanks go to St Austell Brewery for providing that. Remember our courtesy bus back to the train station is in operation today, that will start after the last race and depart from the main drive adjacent to the Premier Inn Hotel.
There’s plenty more action to come here at Newton Abbot this year with plenty happening on and off course. Please have a look at our Fixture List with its raceday themes elsewhere in this official programme. Next up is Tuesday 9th September, which is our Bowel Cancer Screening Awareness Raceday followed by another two meetings in September and on 18th October we feature our big race of the season, the Intermediate Chase Our Family Fun Series concludes on Wednesday 29th October, which has a Halloween theme. Also, in this programme you will find our full fixture list for 2026 which we are already looking forward to!
Just to reflect on how we have done so far this year, and we are simply delighted to have been able to stage all of our fixtures so far, especially remembering 2024 when we lost 6 of our 18 racedays It’s a great testament to all of the staff we have working so hard round the clock here and they deserve the best of luck for the remainder of the year.
We look forward to seeing you again soon, remember to book in advance online to get your Paddock tickets for £18 rather than the on the day £20. Course Enclosure is £13.
Finally thank you to you all for supporting us through thick and thin, it is hugely valued and here’s to a memorable and successful season for all Have a great day.
Best wishes

Yards, studs and aftercare centres across the country are opening their doors to celebrate the love, care and attention that racehorses receive 365 days a year.
As part of National Racehorse Week, the legendary Frodon will be here at Newton Abbot today.
Frodon, a French-bred bay gelding who joined Paul Nicholls’s stable in late 2015, fashioned one of the most cherished careers in recent National Hunt memory. Across 52 starts, he secured 19 wins, including 17 over fences and 2 over hurdles, and placed in the top three 33 times— a testament to his remarkable durability and consistency.
Frodon’s breakthrough on the big stage came at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, where—ridden by Bryony Frost—he stormed to victory in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase. Frost famously dubbed him “Pegasus,” saying he “has got wings”and that he “grabbed me by the hands”to finish.
Another pinnacle moment came the following year at Kempton Park, where Frodon, again piloted by Frost, claimed victory in the prestigious King George VI Chase. At 20/1 odds, it was a fairy-tale moment. He also took the 2021 Champion Chase at Down Royal. Again showing courage from the front he beat out top competition from the likes of Galvin and Gold Cup winner Minella Indo to capture his third Grade 1 win.
Beyond these headline victories, Frodon demonstrated his versatility and grit to score in a plethora of Grade 2/3 events as well such as the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup and the Old Roan Chase, which he snagged in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
Frodon has a history with Newton Abbot as well. Racing here twice in his career which included a masterful eight-length victory here as a novice in 2016.
Frodon bid adieu in the 2023 King George VI Chase and at 12 years old, he was retired, ended a hugely successful racing career.
Frodon will be parading in the Parade Ring before the first race. Make sure you then stop by our temporary stable adjacent to the Annual Members Room as everyone is welcome to go and meet him.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

THE AUBREY LOZE MEMORIAL
HANDICAP
HURDLE RACE
Chairman here from 2002-2013, Aubrey Loze was a dynamic leader at the racecourse with a profound love for the sport. His racing colours were carried to great success by horses with local trainers and no winner gave him greater pleasure than winning here at Newton Abbot!
Those Newton Abbot winners included the classy Native Fling. Trained by Philip Hobbs, the gelding was a massive 11-length winner here in 1998. They would go on to have great success together, even making the trip over to Ireland to score at Punchestown in 1999.
Aubrey would go on to be named Honorary President of Newton Abbot Races in 2017 and 2018 and this race is run to honour his memory.

TIMEFORM VIEW Won atTaunton (soft) off this mark in February, his only below-par effort since coming here (16.8f) when unsuited by the steady gallop. Bounced back to form granted more of a test when fourth at Cartmel (17.2f). Now tried in a visor and looks well worth another go over this sort of distance. TFRHHHII BHA121

In a wide-open handicap, it may be worth giving MOSTLY SUNNY another chance. He’s been freshened up for this and looks interesting on the form he showed in handicaps earlier this year. Irish raider Feud is one of the least exposed runners and could well improve for this longer trip My Chiquita and The Height of Fame both ran a cracker when placed at Worcester, the latter has an excellent record at this track
