We have again managed to stage all racedays so far this year despite all the vagaries and challenges of the Devon weather! After today’s cracking fixture we quickly move on to our next one which is on 17th October, featuring the high-quality Intermediate Chase, plus Bootlegger’s Turn bring the Party In The Paddock events to a close. We also welcome Black Corton a previous winner of the Intermediate Chase to be our equine hero that day and he will be parading before racing starts. We round off with the Halloween Family Fun Day on Wednesday 28th October with the legendary pumpkin carving making its return, amongst lots more family entertainment and fun. Then we can look forward to another terrific year’s racing in 2027! For today we are delighted to welcome equine superstar Frodon to Newton Abbot this afternoon where he will be parading before our first race and will then be based in our horse shelter adjacent to the annual members bar (along from the Parade Ring on the right hand side). Frodon won 19 races in his career accumulating over £1m in prize money and winning at Grade One level three times – the Ryanair Chase, the King George and Down Royal’s Champion Chase. Make sure you get up close to this sporting legend and learn more about what he’s up to now and since his brilliant racing career concluded. STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

FRODON Out of Miss Country and by Nickname, Frodon was sold at the 2016 Arqana December sale for €18,000 and sent to Paul Nicholls to race in the colours of Paul Vogt. During his time over hurdles in Britain, he raced four times, winning once at Haydock. He also contested the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, where he finished finished a respectable eighth, but the gelding was always going to make a better chaser than a hurdler. On his first first start over fences, he proved that statement to be true when winning a five-runner affair five-runner affair at Newton Abbot by eight lengths. It would be the first first of seventeen victories over fences, where he would accumulate £1,129,721 in career earnings over the larger obstacles. That season, he won the then-Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham and the Grade Two Pendil Novices’ Chase at Kempton. In the spring of 2019, he would claim his biggest prize to date when producing an emphatic jumping display to land the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival under Bryony Le Clerc. She would become synonymous with Frodon throughout his career. In December 2020, he outran his odds to win the prestigious King George at Kempton before following it up with the Group Two Oaksey Chase and Group One Ladbrokes Champion Chase in the same calendar year. His final final victory came in the 61st Badger Beer Handicap Chase at Wincanton in 2022, before he was retired in December 2023. He now enjoys his retirement with Bryony, with the pair still enjoying the odd day at the racecourse.

Race preview from Weatherbys It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card at Newton Abbot this afternoon and a strong field of seven go to post for the Jodie Standing’s Point-To-Point Recruits Novices’ Hurdle. Matiwo sets a good standard for Jane Williams and Ciaran Gethings, the top rated in the field with an official mark of 119. The four-year-old won incredibly impressively at Newbury last season, before a good fourth in the Grade 2 Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle, and is the one they all have to beat on form here on reappearance.
Pappano was rated as high as 93 on the flat and should step forward Jamie Snowden’s Ride Like A Girl is next up on ratings and, whilst having a little bit to find, arrives with race fitness on side under Gavin Sheehan. A winner from a mark of 100 at Huntingdon in May, the mare caught the eye when runner-up at Bangor earlier this month and can go on improving. Southwell bumper winner Scott’s Legacy makes his hurdles debut for the Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies team here, whilst Syd Hosie’s Pappano was rated as high as 93 on the Flat and should step forward from his stable debut here last time, having arrived from the Willie Mullins yard. WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW
A closely matched field of four head to post for the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Handicap Hurdle and Paul Nicholls – who won the race in 2021 – relies on Kilnew Supreme. The mount of Sam Twiston-Davies, the five-yearold has finished runner-up on all three starts under rules and looks well treated here on handicap debut from an opening mark of 106 stepping up in trip. Harry Cobden takes the ride aboard Kom Tu Voudras for Faye Bramley and the JP McManus-owned six-yearold has been in good form through the summer. The Martinborough mare has won at Worcester and Fontwell this year and arrives here on the back of a good runner-up finish over course and distance earlier this month. Joe Tizzard’s Ellerton made all to win a two-runner race here at Newton Abbot on his penultimate start and, whilst over shorter, can appreciate this step back up in distance as a previous winner over two-and-a-half miles. The consistent Kittys Glance rounds out the field for Alan King and Tom Cannon and has been in the top three on all of her last five starts. The mare caught the eye when third behind the reopposing Kom Tu Voudras at Worcester back in June and arrives here on 7lb better terms.
