We will be back on the Rowley Mile on the 20th September for the Cesarewitch Trials day. Today’s racing highlight is the Somerville Stakes, proudly sponsored by Tattersalls. This special contest is open to horses sold in last year’s Somerville Auction, offering a unique showcase for emerging talent. THE NEWMARKET TOWN PLATE The Newmarket Town Plate is believed to be the oldest and longest Flat race in the world - instituted in 1665 by King Charles II and first run in 1666 to be run ‘forever’. Horses were to carry twelve stones and run over the Round Course of three and three-quarter miles. The original race was run after three heats on the (then) new Round Course; “on the outside of the Ditch from Newmarket, shall leave all the posts and flags the first and last heats on the right hand and the second on the left hand by starting and ending at the weighing post, by Cambridge Gap, called Thomond’s Post.” Half an hour was allowed between heats, after which the final itself was run within an hour and a half. Today’s race is therefore easy by yesterday’s standards! The Plate was the first with a set of Rules, for example: “Every rider that layeth hold on, or striketh any of the riders, shall win no plate or prize”.......“Whosoever winneth the plate or prize shall give to the Clerk of the Course twenty shillings, to be distributed to the poor both sides of Newmarket, and twenty shillings to the Clerk of the Race for which he is to keep the course plain and free from cart roots”.......“No man is admitted to ride for this prize that is either a serving man or groom.” POWTERS and GOLDING OF NEWMARKET are delighted to be supporting this historic race.
TO BE RUN IN HONOUR OF THE LATE VALDA EMBIRICOS This 355th staging of the Newmarket Town Plate will be run in honour of the late Valda Embiricos. Embiricos sadly passed away on July 16th this year at the age of 92. Valda Embiricos was a true pioneer for women in racing, with her roles encompassing everything from riding, breeding, racehorse ownership and the administration of the sport. As a rider, she won the Newmarket Town Plate 70 years ago in 1955 aboard her horse Vuples. In winning the famous contest, she was emulating the success of her mother Eileen Joel who rode Hogier to victory to become the race’s first successful female a century ago in 1925. For good measure, Valda’s daughter Alex was successful in the 1984 renewal aboard Summons to make the family successful across three generations in the historic contest. Aldaniti, whom Valda owned in partnership with her late husband Nick, provided her with her greatest day as an owner when he was partnered by Bob Champion to a fairytale success in the 1981 Grand National at Aintree. Sophie Able, Newmarket Racecourses and International Director, The Jockey Club, said: “Valda Embiricos is one of the few people who can truly be described as a pioneer and her achievements across all aspects of racing were unprecedented. We therefore felt it was appropriate to honour Valda by running this year’s Newmarket Town Plate in her honour, 70 years since she won the contest herself as a rider and a century after her mother’s historic success. I would like to say thank you to Valda’s family for their support in bringing this about at this sad time and we look forward to what will hopefully be a race worthy of her memory today.”

The Farriers’ Company, which is numbered 55 in the register of City of London Livery Companies, retains a worldwide reputation for promoting the standards of the craft of farriery. It oversees the training and examinations of farriers and their continuing development. It was one of the first companies to have a Lady Master, HRH The Princess Royal in 1984-85. The Best Shod Awards are presented at a wide range of equestrian events and shows all over the United Kingdom including Badminton Horse Trials, Burghley Horse Trials and the Festival of Eventing, the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the Horse of the Year Show. The Company is also proud to award the Best Shod Horse award at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown. The Award will be judged by William O’Shaughnessy AWCF, a WCF approved Judge, at a suitable time prior to the race. It is not compulsory. The Judge will examine each horse taking into consideration, (a) the condition of the feet, (b) the making (or preparation) and fitting of the shoes and (c) the nailing and the position of clips. The winning horse will be awarded a Rosette and inscribed card, a Brass Plaque to the winning owner and a Brass Plaque for the registered Farrier responsible for its feet and shoeing. The Awards are part of the public face of the Company as well as the events where shoeing and forging competitions take place.

With help from her fitness trainer Natty and some hill cycling, she’s prepped for the challenge. Her horse Barney, trained by Heidi Brookshaw, recently won the Lord Daresbury Cup for the second year running.
