A warm welcome to the July Course for the final day of the Debenhams July Festival, featuring the Group One Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, one of the most valuable and prestigious sprint races in the world which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The Group One Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup was first established in 1876 and has since become one of the leading sprint races in the world. A fast and furious six furlongs, the race has an impressive roll of honour, including in recent years with multiple Group One scorers Starman, Alcohol Free and Shaquille all adding their names. We are also grateful to our headline partner, Debenhams, for their support across all three days of the July Festival. As part of today’s celebrations, racegoers can strike a pose at the Best Turned Out photo opportunity beside the big screen, complete with a paparazzi-style backdrop, while the DJ Twins will provide the soundtrack throughout the afternoon, helping to create the vibrant atmosphere that makes July Cup Day such a special occasion. Head down to the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure for Darts with the Stars, where racegoers can compete with some of the leading darts players, including Keith Deller, Russ Bray and Colin Lloyd. 1. THE AVERAGE FLAT JOCKEY is below 5’6 (although there are exceptions) and weighs between 8 & 9st 2. JOCKEYS BOOTS They are mostly synthetic and can weigh as little as 300 grams 3. RACING SADDLE Weighs between 1 & 2lb

4. JOCKEYS WHIP A jockey’s whip is made from a core of light-weight carbon fibre surrounded by layers of air cushioned foam and light-weight leather. Usage of the whip is strictly controlled by the British Horseracing Authority Stewards who are present on raceday 5. SILKS The silks that a jockey wears belong to the racehorse owner rather than the jockey. Each set is unique, such is the demand for certain designs that some colours can sell for thousands, or even tens of thousands of pounds 6. BREATHING The horse’s lungs breathe in and out 140 times per minute delivering 150 litres of air per second. At 10,000 litres per race, that is what a human breathes in a day 7. HEART CAPACITY Up to 240 beats per minute moving 60 pints of blood during a race. A racehorse’s heart weighs the equivalent of 4 bags of sugar (around 4 kgs)

TODAY’S TOP TIPS RACE ONE Having filled the runner-up spot on his debut at the Curragh, HAFFNER could put his experience to good use. Aidan O’Brien’s colt is likely to prove popular and may reward his supporters with a breakthrough victory. There are some intriguing newcomers on show, with Al Wathba topping the list. The son of Wootton Bassett fetched 900,000 euros as a yearling and market support would be interesting. Subscription and Sioux River are other debutants to note.
RACE TWO Machadadorp dug deep when completing a double at Wetherby and must enter calculations on her handicap bow. An official rating of 86 looks workable for the three-year-old and she merits respect, but the more experienced SONG N DANCE edges the vote. Sean Woods’ filly found only a subsequent Listed winner too strong at Ascot in May and a 1lb nudge up the ratings may prove to be lenient. Shallow and Just A Girl are the pick of the remainder.
RACE THREE MOONFALL was well found in the market when landing the Britannia at Royal Ascot. That was only the three-year-old’s second outing in handicap company and there is every chance he can defy a 7lb rise in the ratings. Wild Thoughts found his winning run coming to an end when pipped at Carlisle and he shouldn’t be far away, although a bigger threat may emerge from handicap debutant Eklleem, who opened his account in ready fashion at Ripon.
RACE FOUR It is difficult to ignore the credentials of AALTO. Ian Williams’ gelding won this contest in 2024 before going down by a narrow margin to the very well-handicapped More Thunder 12 months ago and he arrives following a recent second over C&D. Elarak is 3lb well-in following his Buckingham Palace second at Royal Ascot and commands plenty of respect along with the third from that contest, Great Acclaim. Back In Black has been knocking on the door and this kind of test may be right up his street.
RACE FIVE There was lots to like about ABRAHAM LINCOLN’s debut victory at the Curragh, despite showing signs of inexperience when hitting the front. The son of Wootton Bassett hit the line strongly and his pedigree, which includes several middle-distance performers, suggests he may prove to be a very smart individual. Al Hudaiba has displayed plenty of ability and would be unbeaten but for unseating his rider at Yarmouth on his second start. He is likely to be the main threat, although Pikachu’s fifth in the Chesham gives him every chance of being in the mix.
RACE SIX Venetian Sun didn’t get home in the 1000 Guineas before showcasing her talent when dropped to 6f with an explosive success in the Sandy Lane. She backed that performance up when just holding on in the Commonwealth Cup, although connections have issued a warning about her potentially being in season this week, which tempers enthusiasm on her first run against her elders. ALMERAQ got up on the line to deny Satono Reve in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes and there is every chance that form can be confirmed. It was a fine training performance from William Haggas to get the four-year-old back after a horror fall at York last September and he may have further improvement to come, especially given the fact he is so lightly raced for a sprinter.
RACE SEVEN RIGHTHERE RIGHTNOW has won over track and trip before and showed a lot more on his UK return at Windsor. Representing an in-form yard, there are plenty of reasons to expect a bold showing from this four-year-old and he edges the vote ahead of Leadman, who arrives buoyed by a narrow Doncaster triumph. It’s also worth considering Pinatubo’s Legacy and Crimson Spirit.
RACE EIGHT CAPE FEAR will prove popular in the finale and rightly so given his progressive, unexposed profile for a top yard. He broke through when justifying skinny odds at Lingfield and there should be more to come given that was his first attempt over a distance close to 1m4f and this is his first go in a handicap. Of the others, keep an eye on Parisian Scholar and Melek Alreeh. 18

Rowley Mile War Secrets Reawakened A Place Where Champions Race & Secrets Still Lie Beneath The Turf Newmarket’s Rowley Mile is usually seen at its most electric during the Flat season, when the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas define the sport’s early Classics and the best horses in the world take centre stage. It is a place of speed, pressure and precision, where history is made in seconds on turf that has hosted generations of champions. Beneath that surface lies a second story—one that, until recently, remained largely out of sight.

Between 1939 and 1942, the Rowley Mile was not only a racecourse; it became a covert Royal Air Force base. From this ground, 138 Squadron and 161 Squadron of the RAF’s Special Duties operations launched secret missions into occupied Europe. The work was part of Britain’s hidden wartime effort to support resistance networks behind enemy lines. Aircraft departed Newmarket on night flights into France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, carrying agents, supplies and equipment into territories controlled by enemy forces. These were not routine sorties. They were flown in darkness, often alone, and frequently without navigational aids that pilots could fully rely on. Every take-off carried uncertainty. Every return was earned. For decades, this role remained known only in specialist history. Now, that legacy has been formally brought back to the very ground where it once began. A Lysander Returns To The Place It Once Departed From To mark this extraordinary chapter in the racecourse’s history, a historic Westland Lysander flew over the Rowley Mile before landing on the airstrip, bringing one of the war’s most distinctive aircraft back to its origin story. The Westland Lysander was designed specifically for missions like these. Built for short take-off and landing, it could operate from rough fields in occupied territory, slipping in and out of darkness to deliver or retrieve agents in complete secrecy. The installation, delivered in partnership with Secret WW2, formally recognises the Rowley Mile’s role in RAF Special Duties operations. Placed where thousands of racegoers pass through every season, it ensures this story is no longer hidden in archives or specialist memory. It sits within the everyday life of the racecourse itself. A place known for sporting drama now also holds a permanent reminder of a different kind of risk, carried out in silence and shadow. Families, Memory And The Human Thread Behind The Missions The commemoration brought together historians, local families, and descendants of those involved in the operations, including relatives of French Resistance operatives and servicemen who trained at the Rowley Mile. Their presence highlights the immense risks taken on the ground as well as in the air, bringing the narrative back to the people behind it. These enduring family links add another layer to the story, connecting Newmarket not only to wartime strategy and operations, but to individual lives shaped by them. Together, they reflect how this history stretches far beyond Suffolk, into occupied Europe and across wartime networks built on secrecy, trust and courage. Race preview from Weatherbys It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Handicap Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon, a mile handicap for three-year-olds that has attracted an extremely strong field of nine.
Handicap debutant Eklleem is one of the more intriguing runners in the field for William Haggas, the son of No Nay Never potentially let in lightly here from an opening mark of 87. He looked very smart stepped up to this trip at Ripon last time, overcoming a troubled passage and drawing right away to score in good style. The gelding is open to plenty of improvement on just his fifth career start.
Heading the field is George Boughey’s Royal Ascot winner Moonfall, who improved on his eye-catching Chester reappearance to take the Britannia Stakes last time. The Starman gelding was well supported in the market and travelled fluently through the race on the stands side, quickening smartly into the lead entering the final furlong and holding off all challengers. He must contend with a 7lb rise here but that is often the hottest handicap around and is form worth following.
The other handicap debutants in the field are Alfaraz and Iron Lily. The former, trained by Andrew Balding, has form behind Derby runner-up Maltese Cross and got off the mark in a novice event over course and distance last time. That looked a strong race, besting two lasttime-out winners, and an opening mark of 88 may well underestimate his ability. Iron Lily makes his stable debut for Simon and Ed Crisford and has his sights lowered here. He had excuses last time – scoping dirty – and is better judged on his earlier form.
There are three others in this field who arrive here from the same race at the Royal Meeting, including Wechaad who caught the eye in seventh. Roger Varian’s colt didn’t have the clearest run up the rail but plugged on well and runs from an unchanged mark here with Ryan Moore in the saddle. St Anton finished in midfield but had won his previous two before Ascot, whilst Tales Of Wisdom beat just two home in the Britannia but was poorly positioned and had previously looked progressive.
Richard Spencer’s Wild Thoughts has proved incredibly progressive this term, rising up the handicap from an initial mark of 56 and winning his first four races of the season. He was just headed in the dying strides by the reopposing St Anton to snap the winning run but is 1lb better off with that rival here and is tried in first-time cheekpieces.

SUPERLATIVE STAKES (GROUP 2) The youngest of the three Group Two contests staged at The July Festival for two-year-olds, the Superlative Stakes was first run in 1972 as the Limekilns Plate and won by the Bernard van Cutsem-trained Great Love. In 1975, it was renamed the Limekilns Stakes.
Saba Desert (2025)
From 1980 until 1990 it was named the Bernard van Cutsem Stakes in honour of the late Newmarket trainer before being known as the Superlative Stakes from 1991 onwards. Held over seven furlongs, it is open to colts, geldings and fillies, although rarely contested by the latter. It has held Group Two status since 2006. Shirley Heights (1977) was the best winner in the race’s early years and went on to win the Derby and Irish Derby in 1978. The 1991 winner Dr Devious also went on to score at Epsom Downs the following year while most recently City Of Troy (2023) was the spectacular six and a half lengths winner of the Superlative Stakes before going on to record an impressive victory in the Epsom Derby. Other significant winners over the years have included Dubawi (2004), who went on to win three Group One races the following year before a spectacular career at stud, and Olympic Glory (2012), a subsequent four-time Group One winner. Sir Henry Cecil is the leading trainer of all-time in the contest with thirteen winners while among current handlers Charlie Appleby takes the lead with his six wins, most recently with Saba Desert taking glory last year. Pat Eddery and William Buick have each ridden five winners of this race. Buick has been the jockey to follow in recent times, landing the honours four times since 2020.

TODAY’S FEATURE RACE AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI JULY CUP The Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup, the centrepiece of the three-day Debenhams July Festival, is one of the most valuable sprint contests in the European racing calendar, with the 2026 running offering a total prize fund of £800,000. The Group One event is run over six furlongs on the famous July Course at Newmarket and celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. Springfield, bred by Queen Victoria at the Hampton Court Stud, took the inaugural running in 1876, and followed up a year later to become the first dual winner. Springfield also proved top-class over longer distances, landing the Champion Stakes over 10 furlongs in 1877. Other outstanding victors in the early years included Sundridge, successful in 1902, 1903 and 1904 - the only triple winner in the history of the race. The son of Amphion was a true rags to riches story, having graduated from selling company. He was also a great success at stud, being a highly influential sire in Europe and North America. The great mare Diadem added to her victory in the 1917 1000 Guineas by scoring in 1919 and 1920. Diomedes, a grandson of Sundridge, recorded a brace of victories in 1925 and 1926, on the latter occasion dead-heating with Phalaros, while flying grey Abernant landed the spoils in 1949 and 1950. Another dual winner was Right Boy, triumphant in 1958 and 1959. The son of Impeccable, purchased for 575 guineas by his trainer Bill Dutton - the winning rider on 1928 Grand National victor Tipperary Tim - also landed the Nunthorpe Stakes twice, the King George Stakes twice, the Cork & Orrery Stakes twice (now the Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes) and the King’s Stand Stakes (now the King Charles III Stakes) In the 1970s, the July Cup was dominated by the formidable trainer-jockey partnership of Vincent O’Brien and Lester Piggott. They hit the bullseye four times during the decade, kicking off with Thatch in 1973, followed by Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978) and Thatching (1979). Piggott continued his excellent form in the race into the next decade, securing the 1980 renewal aboard Moorestyle. This kick-started an outstanding period for the July Cup, with the next five winners - Marwell (1981), Sharpo (1982), Habibti (1983), Chief Singer (1984) and Never So Bold (1985) - all rated as the best sprinter in Europe in their year. The 1990s saw two big upsets in the July Cup. Hamas, a 33-1 shot, triumphed under Willie Carson in 1993, getting the better of favourite College Chapel to deny Lester Piggott an 11th success in the event, while Compton Place shocked punters when landing the prize at 50-1 under Seb Sanders four years later. Agnes World holds the distinction of being the first ever Japanese-trained winner in Britain when taking the 2000 July Cup. Trained by Hideyuki Mori and ridden by ace Japanese jockey Yutaka Take he prevailed in a thrilling finish by a short-head

from Lincoln Dancer, with another short-head back to Pipalong in third. As with so many Group One races, Vincent O’Brien’s successor at Ballydoyle, the unrelated Aidan O’Brien, has enjoyed great success in the July Cup with a joint-record five winners courtesy of Stravinsky (1999), Mozart (2001), Starspangledbanner (2010), US Navy Flag (2018) and Ten Sovereigns (2019). Having been successful as a rider aboard Oasis Dream in 2003, last year saw Richard Hughes train the winner with No Half Measures causing a record 66-1 upset. MOST SUCCESSFUL HORSE: Sundridge, the only triple winner, is the most successful horse in the July Cup. His victories came in 1902, 1903 and 1904. MOST SUCCESSFUL OWNER: Jack Joel and Coolmore syndicates with various combinations of Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith with five wins each are the most successful owners. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings. But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible. Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry. We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic. So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.
EMERGENCY NOTICE In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.
PARADE RING ACCESS In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
PHOTOGRAPHY Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. HBLB PRIZE MONEY The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
