Newbury Racecourse - Saturday 28th February

Page 1

FREE WI-FI

How To Use:

Newbury Racecourse is delighted to offer all racegoers free use of our Wi-Fi service.

Good afternoon, and a very warm welcome to our BetVictor Weekend Raceday.

We have an exciting afternoon of Jumps action ahead, including our feature contest, the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase.

Our thanks go to our long standing title partner, BetVictor, for their continued support and for generously retaining the ‘Greatwood’ charity title. We also extend our appreciation to OLBG for sponsoring today’s final race, the OLBG Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race

Our feature race, the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase is worth £80,000 and once again takes centre stage on ITV. Last year’s winner, Booster Bob, showcased the race’s quality, and that standard is upheld today with contenders such as Olly Murphy’s Pleasington, Paul Nicholls’ course-anddistance winner Twinjets and Dan Skelton’s former 2024 victor Heltenham, as well as local trainer Harry Derham’s progressive Teddy Blue.

We are also delighted to stage a second ITV televised race today, the BetVictor Veterans’ Handicap Chase, run over the same start as the Coral Gold Cup (3m2f). This race features Newbury favourite Sam Brown, a dual winner here, and Eldorado Allen, a previous Denman Chase hero for the Joe Tizzard team

With March arriving tomorrow, we’re now only three weeks from the culmination of the Jumps season. We look forward to welcoming our partners at BetVictor back on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st March for the Jumps Season Finale.

This week has seen the Racecourse confirm the final artist for this summer’s Party in the Paddock music raceday series with multi-platinum singersongwriter Jessie J performing live after racing at VisitMalta Hungerford Weekend on Saturday 15th August. Jessie J joins Gipsy Kings (Friday 17th July), Ronan Keating (Saturday 18th July) and Tinie Tempah (Friday 14th August) for what promises to be our biggest ever summer of music and racing. Super Early Bird tickets – priced from just £24 – are available for this summer’s action but only until Friday 27th March

Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We look forward to welcoming you back on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st March for the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

COLONEL

J UPTON

Colonel ‘Jacky’ Upton was a jockey Club Inspector of National Hunt Courses and instigated many improvements on the fences and hurdles for the safety of horses and jockeys He always ensured that the fences were firm but fair. He was a great friend of Geoffrey Freer and many good ideas were discussed whilst they were walking around the racecourse.

He retired from the Jockey Club in the early sixties due to ill health and died soon after.

His son, Pat Upton was an amateur rider but gave up race-riding due to a very bad fall in 1971. He was also a trainer for 17 years, based near Lambourn.
