The afternoon begins with an intriguing contest as Sober Glory, a previous Listed winner at Newbury, looks to reignite his hurdling campaign after tasting defeat for the first time at Sandown. In the second division of the BOYLE Sports Novices’ Hurdle, all eyes will be on Fire Warning, the €340,000 recent purchase now in the hands of Nicky Henderson and the Ricci family, making his eagerly anticipated debut for the yard. Our penultimate and feature event is the Alder Demain & Akers Mares’ Chase, a Listed contest that sees the return of Panic Attack, the warm favourite, back at the track where she delivered her emphatic Coral Gold Cup victory in November. Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to welcome back one of the most spectacular days in the racing calendar – William Hill Super Saturday on 7th February. Featuring the UK’s richest handicap hurdle, this fixture takes place just five weeks before the Cheltenham Festival and has always showcased superstars - think Altior, Denman, and Native River. Discounted tickets start from just £26 but are only available until Friday 30th January so we encourage you to move fast. Don’t forget, groups of seven or more save. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do: 1.

Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: •

‘To win’ is for your horse to come ﬁrst.

•

‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come ﬁrst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

•

What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

•

The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ﬁfth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? Laying of bets is subject to Racecourse terms and conditions. The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Grandstand ground ﬂoor. Customers of the boards and rails bookmakers should check their itemised tickets immediately on receipt, as mistakes cannot be rectiﬁed after the ‘off’. Collecting your winnings: If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after
