SAT 7 FE B 2026

How To Use:

Newbury Racecourse is delighted to offer all racegoers free use of our Wi-Fi service.

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to William Hill Super Saturday, one of the highlights of Newbury’s Jumps season.
I would like to begin by thanking our title partner, William Hill, for their continued support of this flagship meeting.

This afternoon’s action is headlined by three outstanding contests. The £155,000 William Hill Hurdle once again promises to be a fiercely competitive handicap, a race in which progressive hurdlers often announce themselves on the big stage, including recent course-and-distance winner Tutti Quanti from the Paul Nicholls yard
The William Hill Denman Chase remains a cornerstone of the staying division and a proven trial for some of the sport’s biggest prizes. Recent Welsh Grand National hero Haiti Couleurs bids to continue his winning form under Sean Bowen as he gears up for next month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Last year’s William Hill Game Spirit Chase winner Master Chewy returns to Newbury to defend his crown for the Twiston-Davies team, while current market favourite Lulamba, for Nicky Henderson, looks to follow in the footsteps of many who have targeted this race en route to Cheltenham Festival success.
We are also delighted to welcome a host of jumping legends this afternoon. Barbers Shop, Coneygree, Dashel Drasher, Lord Du Mesnil, Native River, and Smad Place will be parading at approximately 1:50pm as part of our RoR Parade. A sincere thank you to all connections for making this possible.
Last week saw us announce our third music act of the summer - BRIT Awardwinning rapper and cultural icon Tinie Tempah – who will perform live after racing as part of Visit Malta Hungerford Weekend on Friday 14th August Tinie joins The Gipsy Kings, who will perform after racing on Friday 17th July, and Ronan Keating who takes to the stage on Saturday 18th July as part of Weatherbys Super Sprint Day. Ultra-discounted Super Early Bird tickets for this summer’s music racedays are priced from just £24, but only until March
Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We look forward to welcoming you back for the BOYLE Sports Raceday on Tuesday 17th February.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

The William Hill Denman Chase is one of Newbury newer races and immediately became one of the most significant conditions chases of the jumps season when it was established in 2000.
The race was originally named the Aon Chase and, run over a distance of an extended 2m7f, and has become a regular destination for leading staying chasers, many of which go on to contest the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
SeeMoreBusinesssetthepatternwhenhecapturedtheinauguralrunning the year after he landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was the first of ten winners trained by Paul Nicholls whose other winners included champions Kauto Star in 2007, Denman in 2008 and 2021 winner Secret Investor.
Kauto Star and Denman both went on from Newbury to triumph in the followingmonth’sCheltenhamGoldCup,afeatmatchedsincebyConeygree in 2015 and Native River in 2018.
The popular Denman’s connection with Newbury, where he also became one of only three horses to win two editions of the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Coral Gold Cup, in 2007 and 2009, was formally recognised when the race was renamed the Denman Chase in 2012.

The William Hill Game Spirit Chase is named in honour of twenty-one-time winner Game Spirit, who raced over six seasons in the 1970’s for the Queen Mother.
The race itself was first run back in 1953, with the prize going the way of Marcianus for trainer George Beeby. In 1992, it was upgraded to a Grade 2. The roll of honour features a whole host of dual winners but it was Waterloo Boy in 1992 and then 1993, who first achieved the feat. He has since been joined by the likes of Viking Flagship, Azertyuiop, Master Minded, Altior and more recently Funambule Sivola. The aforementioned Altior had a particular affinity with this race, winning it three times on the bounce between 2017 and 2020. Altior and Master Minded both won this race before winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Paul Nicholls is the top trainer with an impressive six wins with David Nicholson and Nicky Henderson one behind him on five. Nico de Boinville is the top jockey in recent years thanks to his impressive partnership with Altior however it is Ruby Walsh who has ridden the most winners, with four.

The William Hill Hurdle is the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and has a long history as one of the most competitive races in the jumps calendar.
When it was first run in 1963, the 2m handicap hurdle took place at Aintree andwasknownastheSchweppesGoldTrophy, butsoonfoundapermanent home at Newbury.
ItbecameanannualtargetforRyanPricewhocapturedfourofthefirstfive runnings, twice with Rosyth, each winner ridden to victory by Josh Gifford.
In 1968 Persian War set a weight-carrying record when he shouldered 11st 13lb to victory and the following month became the first of only two horses to win the showpiece hurdle and the Champion Hurdle.
It was another 27 years before Make A Stand, trained by Martin Pipe, matchedPersianWar’sachievementbywhichtimetheTotehadtakenover the sponsorship.
Nicky Henderson holds the record for the most wins in the race, recording seven successes, including with Joyeuse last year. Gifford, who also won the raceasatrainerwhenDeepSensationtriumphedin1990,retainstherecord for most wins as a jockey.

All In You was narrowly ahead of her in second on that occasion and is feared most having scored in taking fashion at Sandown since. Gerry Feilden winner Tutti Quanti is next on the list ahead of the likeable Hot Fuss.
