Sponsor of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend Founded on 20th December 1983, Dubai Duty Free has grown into one of the biggest single travel retail operators in the world, with sales of US$2.378 billion in 2025, placing Dubai Duty Free in 5th position amongst the global airport retail operators in terms of turnover. To date, Dubai Duty Free has received more than 800 awards including its record tenth Frontier ‘Airport Retailer of the Year’ Award in 2021. In 2025, Dubai Duty Free won 18 awards, including the Gulf Business Award for “Retail Company of the Year” and the nineteenth consecutive Global Traveler Award for “Best Duty-Free Shopping in the World”. Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, featuring the prestigious Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes. To begin, I would like to extend my thanks to today’s partners: Pump Technology, the European Breeders Fund, Conundrum Consulting, and of course, our title partner for the weekend, Dubai Duty Free. 2026 marks the 31st year of Newbury’s association with Dubai Duty Free and we are delighted to welcome members of the Dubai Duty Free team back to Newbury for what promises to be another fantastic weekend. Eight juveniles have been declared for the feature race of the weekend, The £175,000 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (In honour of Ian Balding). The field is headed by the unbeaten Arapaho Gold, who has won all four starts, including over the course and distance. Nabati, has an official rating of 104, has won two of his four starts and is partnered by William Buick, whilst Jolivette receives the 3lb fillies’ allowance and is a half-sister to Jonquil, from the family of Frankel, both who were successful in the Greenham Stakes here at Newbury. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do: 1.

Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: •

‘To win’ is for your

‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your

horse to come ﬁrst. horse to come ﬁrst, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. •

What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a ﬁfth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? MILL REEF – THE IMMORTAL CHAMPION

The race which honours one of the greats of the turf, the legendary Mill Reef, stages its 53rd running today. The 6f contest, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, has been a constant feature at Newbury since Mon Fils, trained by Richard Hannon snr, captured its inaugural running, going on to win the 2,000 Guineas the following year. Mill Reef had recently been retired when the race was named after him. Then a four-year-old, he had been put on a path towards the 1972 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but he never made it to Longchamp a second time after suffering a career-ending injury on the gallops in Kingsclere, near Newbury, where he was trained by Ian Balding. Yet by then his legacy was already sealed. A winner at the highest level over three seasons, his three-year-old campaign featured triumphs in the 1971 Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Arc, a sequence that has not been matched since. His wins at two included the Gimcrack Stakes by ten lengths and Dewhurst Stakes by four. At Newbury he won the Greenham Stakes by four lengths to start favourite for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and, after ﬁnishing second behind another great Brigadier Gerard, he was never defeated again. Indeed, at the end of a year which included a six-length triumph in the King George and three length Arc victory, Mill Reef secured ‘Horse of the Year’ honours over Brigadier Gerard. 18

Kept in training at four when a mooted rematch on the track with his great rival never materialised, Mill Reef won the Prix Ganay and Coronation Cup, which proved to be his final start. Balding and Mellon combined to win the Mill Reef Stakes in 1982 when the brilliant Forest Flower, Europe’s top two-year-old filly that season, captured the prize. Balding was to win the race a second time with Firebreak 2001. Mon Fils was one of four winners of the race for Hannon snr, the most by any trainer and a record he shares with Peter Walwyn. Pat Eddery is the most successful jockey, capturing the prize on five occasions. The race has spawned numerous subsequent Group 1 winners including, during this century, Zafeen, Excellent Art, Dark Angel, Ribchester, who won the Boyle Sports Lockinge Stakes the following year, and Harry Angel.

In June, the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby was held for the 19th time at The Curragh Racecourse in Ireland, offering a rich purse of €1.25 million. The race was won by Benvenuto Cellini, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by jockey Ryan Moore.

This September, the distinctive Dubai Duty Free branding returns to Newbury Racecourse for the two-day Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, marking the season finale of the operation’s horseracing sponsorship in 2026.

Laying of bets is subject to Racecourse terms and conditions. The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Grandstand ground ﬂoor. Customers of the boards and rails bookmakers should check their itemised tickets immediately on receipt, as mistakes cannot be rectiﬁed after the ‘off’.

The use of cameras, video equipment, laptop and other computer equipment, mobile telephones and other telecommunication devices at the Racecourse is strictly controlled and limited.
