Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Weatherbys Super Sprint Day, featuring seven top-class races on one of Newbury’s standout summer racedays. The Weatherbys Super Sprint was established in 1991 and has become a major target for speedy two-year-olds bought at auction. This is the 35th running of the race, and it has played host to some outstanding winners over the years, including the likes of Tiggy Wiggy, Happy Romance and, most recently, Anthelia. Many thanks go to long-standing partner Weatherbys for their continued generous support. A big thank you also to today’s other partners: BetVictor, Pertemps Network, Hallgarten and Novum Wines, Darley, the European Breeders’ Fund and Magic Radio. The third race this afternoon is the £100,000 Hallgarten and Novum Wines Hackwood Stakes, a Group 3 contest over six furlongs. Local trainer Clive Cox saddles two of the seven runners, including this year’s Carnarvon Stakes (Listed) winner, Song Of The Clyde, for the popular owners Middleham Park Racing. It is also great to see a full field, plus a reserve, for the £275,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint, a two-year-old race run over the minimum five-furlong track. The current market leader is the Richard Hughes-trained Bint Archange, who landed a Listed race at Sandown two weeks ago and will be partnered by William Buick. There’s lots to be excited about this evening as we welcome multi-million recordselling star Ronan Keating to the Racecourse’s famous Party in the Paddock stage. Head to the Grandstand Enclosure after racing to catch this evening’s entertainment, with the show scheduled to start at approximately 6:15pm. There’s plenty more to look forward to this summer, including the finale of the popular Summer Evening Series with Hits Radio on Thursday 23rd July, courtesy of The Ibiza Beach Club. This meeting promises an evening of thrilling racing and Ibiza vibes, featuring a live saxophonist and the ultimate summer closing party. 2026 is our biggest year of music yet and following this weekend, we are thrilled to welcome Tinie Tempah on Friday 14th August and Jessie J on Saturday 15th August, both as part of Visit Malta Hungerford Weekend. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do: 1.

A Super Sprint Great Tiggy Wiggy Martin Stevens reﬂects on Tiggy Wiggy’s Weatherbys Super Sprint success 12 years on. The Weatherbys Super Sprint might not be a black-type race but its roll of honour features some brilliantly talented horses, from the ‘pocket rocket’ Lyric Fantasy through the speedball Superstar Leo to the popular rags-to-riches ﬁlly Mrs Danvers.

Found, who landed the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and defeated Golden Horn to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but she did a lot more than many other physically forward juvenile sprinters, ﬁnishing a gallant third to Legatissimo in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

This year marks the twelth anniversary of another of the ﬁve-furlong dash’s iconic winners: the captivatingly quick Tiggy Wiggy.

Tiggy Wiggy was bred by Paul and Marie McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud under the CBS Bloodstock banner. She hailed from the ﬁfth crop of her then still upwardly mobile sire Kodiac and was the second produce of the winning mare Kheleyf’s Silver, a Kheleyf half-sister to Norfolk Stakes scorer Masta Plasta.

It was in July 2014 that the bay filly, trained by Richard Hannon for Potensis Bloodstock, Chris Giles and Merriebelle Stable, blazed a trail under Richard Hughes and bolted up by six lengths at Newbury, stopping the clock in under one minute. Tiggy Wiggy had already blown away the opposition in a maiden at Kempton, a conditions race at Salisbury and the National Stakes at Sandown and finished second in the Marygate Stakes at York and Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She rounded off an outstanding season with decisive victories in the Lowther Stakes at York and Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket to be crowned joint-champion two-year-old filly in Europe with Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Found. Tiggy Wiggy might not have subsequently achieved as much as

Paul McCartan remembers: “It was still early days for Kodiac and he was standing at small money, but we’d seen some very nice horses by him and so decided to use him and sent him Kheleyf’s Silver, a lovely young mare from a fast family. “We were happy with the foal, who turned out to be Tiggy Wiggy. She developed into a nice yearling: straightforward, with good limbs, strength in depth and action. She always looked quick, but obviously we never dreamed she’d turn out to be that quick! “She had her ﬁrst run on the 29th of March and won the Cheveley Park Stakes on the 27th of September, so it was a very enjoyable six months

following her.”

McCartan pinpoints her Weatherbys Super Sprint success as her signature run.

“It was an unbelievable season,” recalls Ross. “She ran eight times, won six and was beaten narrowly into second on the other two occasions. She didn’t win again at three but ﬁnishing third in a deep renewal of the 1000 Guineas was an amazing effort considering she was such a speedball.

“It was probably her best performance,” he says. “She seemed to accelerate twice, which is something you rarely see. She was really amazing that day. “Funnily enough I’d been at Newmarket for the July meeting the week before, and I’d bumped into Richard Hannon’s senior head lad Tony Gorman on the way out and had a quick chat with him. I said it was a pity she hadn’t run in the Cherry Hinton Stakes that week and he replied, ‘don’t worry, she’ll win the Super Sprint’.” Tiggy Wiggy is one of a number of blisteringly quick horses bred by Ballyphilip Stud, along with Battaash and Harry Angel. Fairy Godmother, who weaved her way to victory in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, is another farm graduate. “She might not be the fastest horse we’ve bred, but she’s definitely one of them,” says the unfailingly modest McCartan with a laugh. Tiggy Wiggy was bought by agents who are also associated with numerous fast horses in Peter and Ross Doyle. The father-son talent scouts bid £41,000 to secure her from the Ballyphilip Stud draft at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale of 2013. “Doncaster has been a happy hunting ground for the Doyle family for a long time,” says Ross Doyle. “I remember the first time we saw Tiggy Wiggy quite clearly. We were doing our shortlist before the trainers and owners had got there, and she caught the eye as a very nice, neat and racy filly. “She was a good combination of Kodiac and Kheleyf, as they both get good-looking horses, and she was from a fast family. She also came from a very good home, of course; the McCartans are brilliant breeders. We felt lucky to get her for £41,000.” The Doyles’ haul at that year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale included three other high-class two-year-olds in Estidhkaar, Kool Kompany and Limato, but Tiggy Wiggy

“Richard’s team did a wonderful job keeping the lid on her at home, and Hughesy was magnificent with her. She’d think about things a bit when she got to the track so he’d take his legs out of the irons for a while before each race to calm her down. “She must have been very tough, and possessed a lot of class, to stretch out to a mile in the Guineas like she did. She let down into a lovely model and was sold at the end of her three-year-old season to Coolmore for 2,100,000gns. “She was the filly of a lifetime for everyone involved with her. We wouldn’t mind another one like her, that’s for sure.” Coolmore sent Tiggy Wiggy to their own sire phenomenon Galileo for her first five seasons at paddocks. Four of the resultant foals have run and three have won, including her first produce, the colt Year Of The Tiger, who finished third in the Vertem Futurity at two but was sadly fatally injured on his first run at three. Her fourth foal, High Chieftess, won one race but was sold in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify for US$525,000. The mare, now 14, was sent to Australia in 2023, in foal to Frankel to southern-hemisphere time. The resultant colt, named Central Europe, is a highly-regarded two-year-old having already placed twice at Group level this year. Tiggy Wiggy has also had a St Mark’s Basilica colt in 2024, and a Wootton Bassett filly last year. Australia might be the best in the world at producing sprinters, but its gene pool will surely still be enhanced by the top-class and tenacious Tiggy Wiggy, a true legend of the Weatherbys Super Sprint.

Phil Cunningham eyes Weatherbys Super Sprint prize with home-bred hopefuls “Zigazig Ah is out of Rebel Surge, who was our first winner when we started Rebel Racing. She was second on debut at Lingfield, where she was caught by one that turned out to be decent, and she then showed she had come on massively for that by winning very impressively at Yarmouth. That was over six furlongs too, but we don’t have any worries about coming back to five and I think she’s got to be a live each-way chance with only 8st 4lb and Saffie (Osborne) on board.”

Phil Cunningham is enjoying another fine year with his upwardly mobile Rebel Racing operation, but what he lacks so far is a big winner. That, he hopes, might change on Saturday, when his home-breds Etienne and Zigazig Ah take on favourite Bint Archange and 22 others in a maximum field for the £275,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury. Speed can be found running through the DNA of all Cunningham’s best winners and last year his Run Boy Run won the Ayr Gold Cup while Two Tribes took both Ascot’s International Handicap and the Stewards Cup, in which he had three of the first five.

Cunningham first hit the big time as an owner with 2000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel, and nearly all of his horses have names with pop connotations. Zigazig Ah is in the lyrics to the Spice Girls’ debut single Wannabe, which topped the charts almost exactly 30 years ago. Etienne might have been named after the 1987 Eurohit of that name, which Wikipedia informs us was accompanied by a particularly raunchy video, but that’s not the case, as Cunningham hastens to explain.

The Super Sprint was always therefore going to be on the radar forthe stable’s more precocious twoyear-olds, although what is surprising perhaps is that Cunningham has seldom been seriously involved in the race before, notwithstanding Cookupastorm’s very close fifth in 2018 and Odyssey Girl’s “brutal” bad luck in running 12 months earlier.

He says: “One of my wife Emma’s favourite songs is Only Love Can Break Your Heart, by Saint Etienne, but that was too long for a name. When I tried for Saint Etienne instead I couldn’t have it, so I just went for Etienne.

By coincidence Odyssey Girl is the dam of Etienne, who was a hugely promising second at Newmarket on his debut and is likely second favourite.. “Etienne is a super horse and probably the best of our two-year-olds that we’ve run so far. He ran a super race first time out on the July Course at Newmarket, where I thought he was maybe a bit unlucky in a very close finish. That was six furlongs, but he’s got plenty of speed for five. We think he’s very nice and David Egan rides again, but with no rain around I just hope the ground is as well watered as they say it is.

“I’d bought the dam, Odyssey Girl, for Emma who loves greys, in an effort to get her more interested in racing. That didn’t work I’m afraid, but she did quite well for us and Etienne, another grey, is a classic example of breeding on a budget, as Odyssey Girl was bought cheaply in Ireland and Rajasinghe stands for only £3000. “It’s great to be running for so much money on Saturday with horses bred on a budget like that.” by Graham Dench

Arguably the most successful winners in the race’s history are Tiggy Wiggy and Lyric Fantasy. Tiggy Wiggy built on her success with a win in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes before completing the hat-trick in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. The flying filly also finished in the Classic frame when coming home in third in the 1000 Guineas. Lyric Fantasy, aka ‘The Pocket Rocket’, became the Champion 2yo in the same year as landing the super Sprint and indeed the highest rated filly of 1992. Her most notable success, however, was in the Nunthorpe Stakes in which she became one of only three juveniles to win a Group One race in open-age competition.

Fillies have a good strike rate, possibly down to the 5lb allowance that they receive from the colts. 19 of the 34 renewals of this race have been won by fillies. Happy Romance was victorious in 2020 for the successful team of Richard Hannon and Sean Levey, who teamed up again to win with Gubbass in 2021. The talented colt was given a fine ride by his jockey and showed fine subsequent juvenile form, finishing third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes.

Temple Meads landed the ﬁrst prize of £100,000 in 2010, before winning the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes later in the season back here at Newbury. The 2009 winner Monsieur Chevalier went on to achieve glory in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, emulating Risky who had completed the same double seventeen years earlier. Unfortunately, injury prevented his return to the track as a three-year-old, but he returned to his best form as a four-year-old when ﬁnishing second in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and winning a Listed race at Goodwood.

The 2022 winner Eddie’s Boy progressed to win a Group 3 race in France later in the season before being sold for 320,000 Guineas to race on in Qatar.

In 2005, we saw a shock when the Martin Dwyer-ridden Lady Livius stormed home to win at odds of 100/1, the longest priced winner to date. Apart from Peniaphobia and Tiggy Wiggy, who did it in successive years, the only time that a horse has dipped under the minute mark in this ﬁve-furlongs sprint was in 2000 when Superstar Leo stormed home in 59.19 seconds before going on to ﬁnish second in two Group 1s, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the Phoenix Stakes.

Relief Rally was a hugely impressive winner of the in 2023 and came to Newbury having been beaten by a nose in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot in her previous outing. She went on land the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York and would have been fancied for Group 1 glory in the Cheveley Park Stakes but had to miss the race. Caburn ran on extremely well under Dylan Hogan to grab the lucrative prize in the ﬁnal strides in what was a thrilling renewal in 2024. It was a fantastic result for young trainer Jack Jones who registered the biggest success of his training career so far and the race didn’t work out too badly, with Time For Sandals the 2025 Commonwealth Cup winner in third! Last year’s winner Anthelia gave her trainer Rod Millman a third success in the race following Lord Kintyre and Betty’s Hope and the ﬁlly went on to land a Group 3 contest later in the same season. She was also a second winner of the Weatherbys Super Sprint in four years for her owners Middleham Park Racing.

the A’Ali colt ran out an extremely impressive winner at Leicester when last seen. Hailing from the family of highclass sprinters Swiss Diva and Swiss Spirit, he has the right profile for a Super Sprint winner.

It is a high-class renewal that is headed by Richard Hughes’s Bint Archange, the trainer having won the race twice as a jockey. The Ubettabelieveit filly bounced back from Royal Ascot disappointment to win the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown in good style. That is the strongest form in the race and, as the highest-rated contender, she must hold strong claims with William Buick in the saddle.

Rod Millman registered a third Super Sprint success with Anthelia 12 months It is a high-class renewal that is headed by Richard Hughes’s Bint Archange ago and relies on outsider Courage Best here, whilst Archie Watson won the contest with Eddie’s Boy in 2022 and saddles both Vollering and Niewiadoma. The former has kept good company and placed third in a Listed race at Deauville earlier this month, whilst the latter was well beaten at the Royal Meeting but displayed plenty of ability when winning at Thirsk on debut.

Richard Spencer holds a strong hand with Etienne dropping back in trip after just being edged out in what looked a strong race on the July course last time as well as Yarmouth winner Zigazig Ah, who also drops in trip and sneaks in right at the foot of the weights.

Henry Candy’s Angels Lane made a winning debut at huge odds at Chepstow and bids to prove that was no fluke here, whilst Karl Burke’s Kodi Bear Light must bounce back from a below par effort last time. She did win at Thirsk on her penultimate start however, and her debut form behind Hickory Lad has also worked out well. Clifford Lee rides stablemate Final Appeal, an early season Wolverhampton winner who arrives here on the back of a short break.

Richard Hannon has a long association with this race, winning it four times, and he is well represented with five runners in the field. Rollthedicebaby, the mount of Sean Levey, is perhaps the pick of the quintet on the back of her wide-margin victory at Goodwood last time, whilst Minzaal filly Call Me Tomorrow has shown flashes of ability and could enter the frame if settling a little better.
