Good afternoon, and a very warm welcome to the second day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale, the last day of our Jumps season.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to BetVictor, the title partner of this two day fixture, as well as to today’s sponsors, the British European Breeders Fund, the family and friends of John Haine, Goffs, OLBG, and our new partner, Castle Windows.
The day’s feature race is the BetVictor British EBF ‘National Hunt’ Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle. This Grade 2 contest – with an increased prize fund of £65,000 - has attracted a high quality field with 16 declarations. Charisma Cat heads the weights in what promises to be a strongly run handicap hurdle, while particular attention will be on Strong Run, the beautifully bred full sister to Grade 1 winner Strong Leader Currently a 5/1 chance for the in form Fergal O’Brien team, she brings both pedigree and promise.
Another highlight is the afternoon’s fifth race, the most valuable National Hunt Flat Race in the country. Kindly supported by Goffs, the two mile bumper has attracted a full field of 20 runners. The current market leader is Diamond Street from the Dan Skelton yard, who made a striking debut when winning at Doncaster in January. With Harry Skelton in the saddle and the trainers’ championship entering its decisive stages, connections will be eager to secure another major success.
Alongside the racing, we’re delighted to welcome back members of the local farming community today. They joined us at this fixture last year and racegoers will again have the opportunity to view a number of tractors around the Racecourse today.
Once today’s racing draws to a close, our attention turns to the start of the Flat season on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April, when Classic hopefuls line up for the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture also sees the return of our popular Craft Beer Festival, featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. Discounted tickets are available for a limited time from just £22, so don’t miss out
Looking ahead, 2026 is set to be our biggest year of music yet, with all four acts now confirmed. The bumper summer schedule begins with the Gipsy Kings performing on Friday 17th July, followed by Ronan Keating on Saturday 18th July for Weatherbys Super Sprint Day. A month later, Tinie Tempah takes to the stage on Friday 14th August before Jessie J performs on Saturday 15th August, both as part of Visit Malta Hungerford Weekend. Expect top-class racing followed by spectacular live music. Super Early Bird tickets start from just £24 and are only available until Friday 27th March, so now is very much the time to book.
Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We hope you’ve enjoyed the Jumps season, and we would love to welcome you back for the start of the Flat season on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April for the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend, alongside the Craft Beer Festival.

How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAITLIN
Lots of love from all your family and friends.
JOhN haiNe 1942-1998
John Haine, Winter Fair, Chepstow Photo by Bernard Parkin
John Haine and style were synonymous, on horseback, his manner of dress, his choice of car or his preferred eateries, were all about style. When Brough Scott said, “Maybe John was never destined for old age and slippers”, he summed up the man to perfection.
John’s life revolved around horses from a very early age as a star performer in the show ring, and a competitive follower with the Beaufort Hounds. Apprenticed to Bob Turnell at the earliest opportunity, he rode his first winner on Misconception at Bath in 1958, but after about 30 further successes on the flat, his riding weight dictated a move to the National Hunt. Highlights of his jumping career include wins on Buona Notte in the Gloucestershire Hurdle, and the tote Champion Novices’ Chase (1964), both at Cheltenham. Two more Gloucestershire Hurdle wins followed on Chorus (1967) and Barnard (1971). Other major victories include the Scottish National on Popham Down (1964), the Imperial Cup on Sir Thopas (1967), the Topham Trophy on Charter Flight (1970) and the Welsh National on Charlie H (1972). However, it was winning the 1966 Champion Hurdle on Salmon Spray that gave John his most thrilling victory – horse and jockey matching dash and brilliance, performing a class act to the delight of the Cheltenham Festival crowd.
Ten years as a trainer brought further successes, most notably with Roger Bacon and Jenny Splendid, who enjoyed her retirement in John’s paddocks at Crudwell. Involvement in racehorse breeding and transport maintained John’s participation in the racing world he loved.
Remembering his mischievous smile, and his penchant for a punt, many friends will be raising their glasses to him today as a man who not only loved racing, but most of all loved the horse.
His wife, Sue, summed it up beautifully when she said that her life with John has been “sometimes good, sometimes bad, but never boring!”
