3.20 THE ALAN STEEL FOR INDEPENDENT ADVICE HANDICAP STAKES
3.50 THE RACING
TV HANDICAP STAKES
2.20 THE ALAN STEEL ASSET MANAGEMENT 50TH ANNIVERSARY RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES
This one mile contest for horses aged three, four and five-years-old and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
2 50 THE CELEBRATE NATIONAL RACEHORSE WEEK NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65
This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50
4.20
THE INA AND ELLA MACGREGOR HANDICAP STAKES
This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
4.50 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW HANDICAP STAKES
This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
Retraining of Racehorses Parade

TURNOFEVENTS
OWNEDBYRACHELBEATTIE
Musselburgh’s Horses for Courses Ambassador Evie was bred by Rabbah Stud, but despite impressive breeding and 18 months in training, she was deemed to slow for racing and didn’t take to being a broodmare either. After figuring out where to put her legs when jumping, she now enjoys a range of activities including training camps, RoR showing and British Eventing.
CELTICFLAMES
Perth’s Horses for Courses Ambassador Celtic came straight off the track as a 12 year old from Lucina Russell’s yard, and has run at Musselburgh 6 times. Although 12 can be considered late for a career change, he now enjoys cross country, ex-racehorse showing classes and working hunteralthough getting braver he is known to be scared of his own shadow!
GREYMOSS
Raced once as a 6 year old at Ayr in 2022, Grey Moss now lives at home being the only horse on a beef farm with over 60 cows. Cross country is her favourite discipline and she is entered into her first British Eventing competition next month. She has won Reserve Champion Ex-Racehorse at Stirling Show the last two years in a row.
NIQNAAQPAADIWAAQ
Nicky raced at Musselburgh as a 3 year old but now enjoys his life as an all-rounder. He was the winner of the 2024 Scottish RoR dressage championships, and came 6 at the National Championships at Aintree. He loves to self-exercise in his field and is particularly good at acrobatics and hand stands!
ToD has raced all over the UK including Ascot, Goodwood and York before embracing retired life seven years ago. He does everything from dressage to eventing, beach rides and baby sitting young horses, and is going to give showing a go next year when he turns 15.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erec around a fallen horse.
