THE TRACK A CIRCUIT OF THE TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE. THERE ARE 8 HURDLES AND 8 STEEPLECHASE FENCES ON EACH CIRCUIT, WITH 2 OPEN DITCHES ON THE CHASE COURSE. THE ALL-WEATHER FIBRESAND BEND WAS INSTALLED IN 2012 FOR SAETY REASONS ON THE TIGHT TOP BEND AFTER THE FINISHING LINE. THIS IS UNIQUE TO MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE AND THE FIRST IN THE UK.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE

Today’s day’s feature contest will be the Virgin Bet Auld Reekie Handicap Chase at 2.15. Nine line up here for what looks set to be a fantastic contest. The Kalooki Kid will be making his re return to Musselburgh after his stellar showing when winning the Scottish Champion Chase over this course and a distance back in February. His sole start off this term saw him last of four at Carlisle in November, but he w will be much better for having that run under der his belt. Insurrection is another former course and distance winne winner in action here, Paul Nicholls’ gelding having scored in a strong handicap also at the Scottish Cheltenham Trials Weekend. Jet To Vegas comes into this off the back of a pair of runner-up efforts, mostt recently at Ascot, and wi will be looking to go one better here today.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H

CRAIG NICHOL has started well this season. He rides Flagstone in the th opener, the four-year-old making his first start for his new yard. He’ll also be aboard Rememberthename ename in the 2.5 2.51 as the gelding looks to build on a pair of solid showings at Kelso. His final ride will be aboard Star Of Guiting in the finale. The five-year-old was impressive when second here in November. vember. BRIAN HUGHES has an impr impressive 19% strike rate over the last couple of weeks eeks and with five rides here today, he has a great chance of continuing co his fine start to the season. Moonbow in the 1.40, Jet To Vegas in the 2.15 and City Of Diamonds iin the 3.25 look to be his standouts.

TRAINERS TO WATCH

DONALD MCCAIN is always a safe bet at Musselburgh, and he has three runners today. They come in the form of last time out winner Serious Chat, who was impressive at Doncaster in November, in the 1.40, Bleu d’Enfer in the Auld Reekie and City Of Diamonds in the 3.25 who won over course and distance earlier this season. LUCINDA RUSSELL & MICHAEL SCUDAMORE have had a solid strike rate of late and have a massive 11 runners here today. A few to watch are Fiveafterfour in the 1.05, former course and distance winner Bold Light in the 1.40 as well as last time out winner Chanonry Point in the same race. Jet To Vegas and Inox Allen both are in the running to win the 2.15, while Biglesisback is looking to turn her string of places into a ﬁrst win in the 2.51

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 12:30 THE VIRGIN BET JUVENILE HURDLE RACE Juvenile races are designed in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals. Initially, every runner in this two mile hurdle race is allotted 11st (ﬁllies 10st 3lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant how many races they have won – 7lb for one hurdle win or 12lb for two.

1.05 THE LIVESCORE BET NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the ofﬁcial start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile, four and a half furlong novices’ steeple chase is for horses aged ﬁve-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases which are rated between 0-100.

1:40 THE VIRGIN BET A GOOD BET HOGMANEIGH HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

2.15 THE VIRGIN BET AULD REEKIE HANDICAP CHASE This is a two mile, four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for ﬁve-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 145 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 140.

2.51 THE LIVESCORE BET HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

3.25 THE VIRGIN BET SUPPORTS SAFE GAMBLING HANDICAP HURDLE RACE This two mile handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 125. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose ofﬁcial rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

Virgin Bet Raceday Preview

12.30pm - This year’s opener at Musselburgh is the Virgin Bet Juvenile Hurdle. Scarlet Moon comes here with a good record in 2025 and although a newcomer to the jumps, he has taken to hurdling well, winning over similar conditions in Warwick in early November. Falls of Acharn will be looking to score 3 in a row but with this being a hurdle debut, it will be interesting to see how he gets on. Arctic Voyage should also be in the mix after making a return from a wind surgery. 1.05pm - Marty McFly is a strong prospect here, performing well here recently with a strong run into 4th back in early December. Now back over the same distance again, connections will be hoping for an improvement. Didntgotwenty has been unlucky in recent outings but should also be considered with an impressive run of form coming into this. Fiveafterfour should come back here in better standing having had a run out a few weeks ago and will be looking to make an impact. 1.40pm - A strong field for this handicap and several interesting competitors. Bel Amigo has strong claims here, an impressive 2025 included a hat trick early in the year and placing in his last 3 runs. Chanonry Point will also be looking to continue her fine form, winning 3 of her 5 starts last year with the latest being here at the end of November over 1m7f, will the step up in trip cause an issue? Fasol and Serious chat also will be looking to start the year with a bang and are both to be considered. 2.15pm - Rexem comes back from a 70-day break after a couple of strong hurdle performances over in Clonmel and will be expected to show the same form here as his 2nd to last run, winning over the same distance. Jet To Vegas should be top of the market here, in 8 runs he has only finished outside the top 2 in a grade 1 at Aintree where Salvator Mundi took the top spot. Insurrection is also impressive and if the ground stays as is, can compete. 2.51pm - Stablemates Biglesisback and Kool Raoul could both be market leaders here. The Russel & Scudamore trained duo both look to have the form and the pedigree to handle this class 4 if either can get the better of the other. Snowrocco should also be in the mix, winning last time out at Newcastle earlier in December, and now back at the same trip going for the double. Jena D’Oudairies, will be looking for an improvement on recent form and just might find her feet today. 3.25pm - Our final offering today is another competitive handicap to finish off a fine day of racing. Cueros looks like a strong contender here, 3 runs in recent months after a hefty 2-year break has this gelding in great shape, winning at Newcastle then 2nd at Wetherby then Plumpton. City Of Diamonds will also be well backed, having won here at the end of November and with Brian Hughes once again taking the ride, this duo will certainly be in the mix. Mr McLoughlan should also be considered, winning 4 of his last 5 outings since August over hurdles.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses inn action action. During a race two vets follow the action from thee centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical di Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. eys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especiall especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention tention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but ut allows the vet some so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to ma make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see seee screens erected erect around a fallen horse.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
