3:40 THE PERTEMPS NETWORK GROUP HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular one mile, seven and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

This is a two mile, about four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for novices aged five-years-old and upwards The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

This is a two mile, about four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 110 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

This is a three mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

This two mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 145. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage

4:15 THE BET BOOST AT BET365 HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

The final race this afternoon is a two mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upwards which have been officially rated 0-110. As is all handicaps on this afternoon’s card the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 110 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 105.

Sunday's History of Runners

The bet365 Scottish Supreme Novices' Hurdle

Tommy’s Oscar, runner-up in 2021, has won nine races since, including in Grade 2 company. The 2021 4th placed Third Time Lucki became a Grade 2 winner over fences, while 6 placed Belfast Banter went on to win the 2021 County Hurdle at Cheltenham, followed by a Grade 1 at Aintree. 2015 winner Some Plan won the Grade 1 Irish Arkle two years later. th

2025 Winner Tripoli Flyer

The bet365 Frodon Novices' Chase

Did you know?

Won by multiple Grade 1 winner Frodon himself in 2017, as the launchpad to a stellar career. Divers won in 2011 before following up at Cheltenham. Douglas Talking, 2022 winner, went on to be runner up in a Class 1 at Aintree. 2025 winner Insurrection went on to run at the Cheltenham Festival.

Frodon is now happily retired on Dartmoor, being looked after by his regular race winning jockey Bryony Frost. “His days now will be filled with joining Black Corton, carefree, galloping across the moor, beach rides, all you can eat haynet and whatever he finds fun!”

2025 Winner Insurrection

The bet365 Edinburgh National

2023 winner Magna Sam went on to win the Edinburgh National again in 2025 - could he be a back-to-back champion with a third win in this year’s race?

Winner from 2021 Mighty Thunder was close second in the Midlands National before winning the Scottish Grand National. Missed Approach, 2nd in 2018, won the Kim Muir at Cheltenham the same year. Runner up Captain Cattistock won a Class 2 at Cheltenham.

2025 Winner Magna Sam

The Pertemps Network Group Handicap Hurdle Race

Seddon, runner in 2022, went on to win a Class 1 at the Cheltenham Festival in 2023.

Brandy McQueen, 2023 winner, ran well in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham (that this race is a qualifier for). Monmiral, who ran at the Cheltenham Trials in 2024, went on to win the Pertemps final in 2024.

The winner of the 2023 final, Good Time Jonny, also won at Musselburgh in January 2020. Dual Grade 1 winner Ahoy Senor is declared for this year’s race - his first Musselburgh run.

Solness came out on top in a Grade 1 over C&D over the Festive period when getting the better of Marine Nationale (second) and MAJBOROUGH (third). However, there is every chance the latter, who sports cheekpieces for the first time, can reverse the form with both rivals, especially with more testing underfoot conditions. Marine Nationale did exceptionally well to recover from nearly losing his rider at the second fence on that occasion, but the ground here has to be a major concern. Dual Champion Chase hero Energumene may not quite be the force of old but he commands respect with conditions very much in his favour.

Lossiemouth and Brighterdaysahead lock horns once again after their encounter in the December Hurdle where Willie Mullins’ mare came out on top. That said, the latter had missed some intended targets, when expected to be sent over fences earlier in the campaign, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if she were able to reverse those placings.A chance, though,is taken with EL FABIOLO.Twice a winner at this meeting over fences, his jumping had fallen apart in that sphere, with three falls from his last four chase starts, but the nine-year-old returned with a confidence-boosting display at Punchestown on NewYear’s Eve and appears to still retain all of his ability judged on that display.

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
