T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA
The feature race on today’s card is the Virgin Bet Scottish Cup Handicap, due off at 3:42 AGAINST THE a WIND currently heads the marker for Kevin Ryan and Kevin Stott. He made an eye-catching return at e rk H Southwell when beaten a length-and-a-half and should improve nicely for that outing DEMOCRACY ell aten ld n FILEMMA also ran a more than pleasing return on seasonal debut for Robert Cowell and could well give the favourite the most to think about under the ever capable Rossa Ryan VINTAGE CLARETS could be he fa it one at a bigger price to keep an eye on. TRAINERS TO WATCH
Like James Doyle, MICHAEL APPELBY heads north for just one race on today’s card Royal Zabeel shoulders top weight in the 1:55 but shouldn’t be discounted despite a poor showing last time out. He is on a near career high mark but back in more suitable waters, he could well make his presence known. JIM GOLDIE is always one to follow at Musselburgh and today looks no different, with the trainer having eleven runners across the card He saddled five in our final contest and you’d imagine the winner will hail from his stable

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a seven furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90
This one mile, six furlong contest for four-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race Initially, the weights are set at 9st for colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success
This is a one mile, six furlong contest for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90
This race is five furlong handicap sprint for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.
4.12 THE VIRGIN BET SUPPORTS SAFE GAMBLING EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES
This race is a five furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
4.45 THE LIVESCORE BET A TOTAL BETTING EXPERIENCE HANDICAP STAKES
This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80

The Virgin Bet Easter Saturday Raceday
1:25pm- Oisin Murphy takes the ride for the Adrew Balding trained Comic Hero. The 3-year-old gelding won over 7 furlongs last time out in a Novice Stakes at Kempton and the runner up in that race franked the form by winning on its next start. Comic Hero steps up to a 1-mile trip today on handicap debut and looks to have a good chance here. Vincenzo Peruggia was well beaten in a Group 2 race at Glorious Goodwood last summer, but he did show plenty of ability when winning a Novice Stakes at Beverly last June Running off top weight having been given a mark of 91 makes this a tough ask for him, however Strength Of Spirit finished 3 ½ lengths behind Vincenzo Peruggia off level weights but won next time out at Newbury. He carries 10lbs less this time around and has since been gelded.
1:55pm- Midnight Gun was a narrow runner up to Rogue Diplomat in a class 2 handicap at Doncaster in October. He finished 4th out of 11 runners in a listed race at Saint-Cloud on heavy ground and a mark of 102 looks feasible for the 5-year-old gelding. Gweedore makes his 63rd career start today. He is a multiple course and distance winner and goes up 3 lbs for his last win and breaks from stall 10 Goldmoyne has been on a winning streak as of late and is going for his 5th win in a row. He can make the running here and has plenty of early speed but he is racing against better company today.
2:30pm- Al Qareem looks the one they will all have to beat in the Virgin Bet Goliath Cup Stakes. He was no match for Trawlerman and Sweet William in the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot but this stepping back into listed company makes the task an easier one Mount Atlas looks like its main danger The Andrew Balding 5-year-old gelding finished runner up to Hamish in the Virgin Bet Stand Cup Stakes at Chester last September, but an improvement is likely needed for him to reverse the Ormonde Stakes form with Al Qareem. Roaring Legend can go from the front if needed. He was runner up in the AWC Marathon Trial Handicap at Lingfield. He stays well and has place claims here today.
15.05 – Moon Over Miami makes his return for Ralph Beckett after a year break and will be looking to maintain his 100% record and make it 4 from 4 on the turf after an underwhelming all weather campaign last spring. Gambino will be glad to be back competing in a format he has seen success A win and 2nd last year at Gowran Park before switching to Skeltons yard, with decent performances on all weather and a novice hurdle lately, Rossa Ryan will take him out here today and is one to watch. However, Gentle Warrior might be the one to beat here, the 4 y-o gelding already has 14 runs under his belt and is never far off the medals.
15:42 – This Scottish Sprint Cup is a wide-open contest. Jer Batt is an interesting one here, regularly placed near the top of the market but without a win since August 2024, making his debut after a wind op, connections will hope he steps up today. Lexington Blitz also might be in the mix, and if the ground dries up a little to the firmer side, might be one to consider. Against The Wind doesn’t have the best form on turf, doing better recently on the AW while Democracy Dilemma is the one that looks best suited to take this one on form.
16:12 – The D Loughnane trained Katie’s Knight has been given the ride of Rossa Ryan, former Champion Jockey which could be the defining factor of this race Stay On Tab is one the might be priced out, but another successful Trainer Jockey combination of Jardine & Mullen, this is one that should be respected. The Kalonji Man is the only contestant here with a run to its name, and although well beaten last week at Doncaster, punters might be hopeful Sean Levey can get the best out of this colt.
16:45 – The Finale here is the LiveScore Bet A Total Betting Experience Handicap. Water Of Leith comes back to the turf after competing on the AW for the winter and has been in fantastic form with a handful of top 3 finishes, crowned by a win last month at Wolverhampton. Richard Hannon’s Thecoffeepoddotco is also one to look at here. Also on the back of an impressive winter, these two are likely to be battling for Gold if their form can carry over from the all-weather circuit. Al Hussar will be a bit more familiar with today’s surface and comes back from a long break with more success in sight.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH
At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to make a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
