THE BET365 SCOTTISH TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE (A JUVENILE HURDLE) (LISTED RACE)

Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this one mile, seven and a half furlong hurdle race will now have an official rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things Initially, weight is allocated according to age and sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above These penalties range from 3lb for a Class 2 weight-for-age or a Class 1 handicap hurdle success to 5lb for a Class 1 weight-for-age hurdle victory.

This is a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

This is a two mile, about four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular three mile novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged five-years-old and upwards.

This is a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

This is a two mile, about seven and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

Retraining of Racehorses Parade

Join Hazel Peplinski in the Parade Ring at 12:00 to meet some fantastic former racehorses and find out about what they do in their day to day lives following racing.

TURNOFEVENTS

Musselburgh’s Horses for Courses Ambassador Evie was bred by Rabbah Stud, but despite impressive breeding and 18 months in training, she was deemed too slow for racing and didn’t take to being a broodmare either. After figuring out where to put her legs when jumping, she now enjoys a range of activities including training camps, RoR showing and British Eventing.

CELTICFLAMES

Perth’s Horses for Courses Ambassador Celtic came straight off the track as a 12 year old from Lucinda Russell’s yard, and has run at Musselburgh 6 times. Although 12 can be considered late for a career change, at 15 he now enjoys cross country, ex-racehorse showing classes and working hunter - although getting braver he is known to be scared of his own shadow!

BLACKFRIDAY

Ayr’s Horses for Courses Ambassador

A two time winner at Musselburgh, Black Friday retired from racing in November 2024 with seven career wins. He has now turned his hooves to showing, where he has gone from strength to strength and even qualified for the RoR Finals at the Royal Highland Show. He loves getting glammed up and strutting his stuff in the show ring, hacks along the beach and equally loves teaching children to ride!

NIQNAAQPAADIWAAQ

Nicky raced at Musselburgh as a 3 year old but now enjoys his life as an all-rounder. He was the winner of the 2024 Scottish RoR dressage championships, and came 6 at the National Championships at Aintree. He loves to self-exercise in his field and is particularly good at acrobatics and hand stands!

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
