Today’s ay’s feature is the 6.50pm Scots Association Musselburgh Gold Cup, a Class 4 hhandicap run over 2m 2f. Restricted to horsess rated between 66-85, today’s £20,000 competition sees 7 runne runners take the ﬁeld, including Irish raider BOXING G GREAT. Karl Thornton’s 6-year-old comes here from narrow wins aat Leopardstown and Down Royal, and with ith Jason Hart in the irons he is likely to dominate proceedings. Sax Appea Appeal arrives on an easing mark and although top-weight, can bounce back down in grade. Don’t discount Fast Fred, a co consistent performer fresh off three second placings in a row, who can live up to nominativee determinism with a placi placing here.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH TCH JASON HART comes here hot on a 17.7% strike rate, withh 17 w wins from 96 rides in the last month. The Group 1 winning jockey has 6 chances to extendd this today, with rides on Extragalactic (4.42pm), Star People (5.20pm), Sunriseontheboynee (5.50pm), Black Storm (6.20 (6.20pm), Boxing Great (6.50pm) and Wrestling Revenue (7.20pm) pm) for a mix of trainers. TRAINERS TO WATCH DARAGH BOURKE has a 3 from 9 (33.3%) strike rate and brings one runner today, Hale Bopp in the ﬁrst (4.07pm), whilst hot on his heels is TRISTAN DAVIDSON (7 from 22, 31.8%) who saddles two: Eagles Dream (4.07pm) and Coconut Bay (6.20pm). KARL BURKE may be saddling seven at Doncaster today, including his St Leger hope Golden Story, but he has also sent two up for today’s meeting here at Musselburgh – multitasking! He boasts a 23% strike rate (20 from 87) and hopes lie with Vegasmile (4.42pm) and Royal Strike (5.20pm), with the latter ridden by hot jockey Pierre-Louis Jamin.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 4.07 THE NO NAPIER NO PARTY APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55, ridden by apprentice jockeys only. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their ofﬁcial handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

4.42 THE EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES This race is a seven furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the ﬁrst time of asking.

5.20 THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND TROPHY NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

5.50 THE JEWSON EDINBURGH SELLING HANDICAP STAKES Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this one mile and one furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards rated 56-75, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

6.20 THE PETERHEAD FISH MARKET HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 70 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 65.

6.50 THE SCOTS ASSOCIATION MUSSELBURGH GOLD CUP HANDICAP STAKES This is a two mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

7.20 THE LOTHIAN SUPPLY COMPANY HANDICAP STAKES This is a ﬁve furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. Like most handicaps on the ﬂat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualiﬁed equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses inn actio action. During a race two vets follow the action from thee centre of thee cours course and can attend a casualty in the same responsee time as the Medical dica Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. eys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is keptt on all horses, especiall especially those returning after a race. It is now standard rd practice for screens to be b erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention tention on the ground. This does not reﬂect on the severity of an injury, but ut allows the vet some so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, vironment, to ma make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if youu see se screens erec erected around a fallen horse.

CLOAKROOM

Cloakroom facilities are available in the tunnel underneath the grandstand. The cloakroom closes 30 minutes after the last race. If lost property has not been claimed 30 days following the race meeting, items will be donated to charity.
