RACE DESCRIPTIONS

12.05 THE WATCH ON RACING TV JUVENILE MAIDEN HURDLE

RACE

1.05 THE MAINETTI MAIDEN HURDLE RACE

Juvenile races are designed solely for three-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals Initially, every runner in this two miles and one furlong hurdle race is allotted 11st 2lb (fillies 10st 7lb), before previous winners are given a penalty dependant on the class of race which they won – 6lb for a Class 4 or 5 hurdle race or 10lb for a Class 1 to 3 hurdle race victory.

12.35 THE MUSSELBURGH RACECOURSE PREMIUM ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP HANDICAP CHASE

This is a two miles and four and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

1.38 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING MARES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115.

2.13 THE ERMG INSURANCE BROKERS HANDICAP CHASE

This is a two miles handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

2.48 THE BADACHRO HYDRO HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This two miles handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 110. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st 2lb so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

3.20 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

This is a two miles and four furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Probable S.P’s: 6-4 Arctic Voyage (GB), 6-1 Keyboard (IRE), 15-2 Junkyard Dog (IRE), 8-1 French Diablo (FR), 17-2 Bouboule (GB), 12-1 Canavan (IRE), 25-1 Bruce Banner (IRE), 50-1 Orphan Ollie (IRE), 100-1 Red Scarlet (IRE)

It could be worth chancing KEYBOARD on his jumps debut. He gave a good account first time up for Adam Nicol on the level recently and plenty of the yard’s hurdlers have been running well Arctic Voyage sets a clear standard on his Sedgefield second, though that must go down as a missed opportunity. Max Comley’s first two 3-y-o hurdlers to have made the track this autumn have been winners so French Diablo must be worth a look.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying

bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB

Tongue Strap worn by No 7, 9. Blinkers, Tongue Strap worn by No 6. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 9.

Probable S.P’s: 9-2 City of Diamonds (IRE), 5-1 Ravenscraig Castle (GB), 11-2 Russian Virtue (GB), Jolie Coeur Allen (FR), 8-1 Purple Gown (IRE), 9-1 Inappropriate (IRE), 14-1 Jaminoz (IRE), Gemini Man (IRE), 25-1 Star of Guiting (IRE)

A case can be made for most of these but RUSSIAN VIRTUE finished second in a strong race for the grade at Uttoxeter earlier in the year and having shaped as though as good as ever last time, he’s fancied to land a first hurdle success since joining current connections Purple Gown arrives in fine heart and should give another good account, while City of Diamonds makes appeal on his handicap debut.

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet so privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to ma a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
