TIMEFORM VIEW Much-improved since switched to handicaps, off the mark when getting the better of a bang in-form rival, who has won since, at Exeter (21.6f, heavy) last month. Followed up at Uttoxeter (2 1/2m, soft) recently and a 10lb rise probably won’t be enough to stop him here.

TFRHHHII BHA95

FORM 45-P302

TIMEFORM VIEW Things didn’t go to plan over fences but improved back hurdling when a clear second at Hereford (19.7f, soft) last month. That was his handicap debut in this sphere and, still feasibly treated following a 4lb rise, he has to enter calculations.

BARRIER PEAKS has got his act together in no uncertain terms since going down the handicap route and, with further progress likely, he is taken to shrug off a 10lb rise for his latest success and complete the hat-trick. Next on the list is Calidad, who put in a good shift when runner-up back in this sphere at Hereford, while cases can also be made for Escobedo and Lone Star TIMEFORM

LIPA K caught the eye at Leicester last time and this former bumper winner is selected to take a step forward now moving into handicap company. Take Centre Stage showed he can be very competitive from his mark last time and is feared most ahead of Dr Richard Newland handicap newcomer Lightening Gesture.

NHSTALLIONS.CO.UK

HANDICAP CHASE PREVIEWS

Weatherbys sponsor two of today’s eight races, starting with the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Handicap Hurdle, a 0-115 event staged over an extended 2m7f

Given that they are rated 117 (and allowed to contest this race, due to them being rated just 2lbs higher than the ratings bracket), joint top-weights Here Comes McCoy and Cavallino are forced to shoulder 11-13, so trainers Olly Murphy and Fergal O’Brien have opted to claim 5lbs off their respective runners. The former, who represents an in-form stable, got no further than the first fence on his return to action recently (had been off for 626 days) and reverts to hurdles, with Lewis Stones on board. Twice a winner over hurdles (once at this track), his young jockey is also in fine form at present and rode a double at Fakenham last week. Cavallino was previously trained by Willie Mullins and finished tailed-off on his first start for his current stable

Jonjo O’Neill is another trainer in good form, with him saddling a treble at Chepstow last week, and he is represented by the mare Betty’s Banjo, whilst the Micky Hammond-trained Shighness is the only other course winner in the seven-strong field. She won over course-anddistance on her penultimate start, staying on strongly and is just 6lbs higher She ran reasonably well in a competitive race at Haydock last time, so seems to be in good order

Republican represents Oliver Sherwood and it is a big day for the Lambourn-based trainer, who saddles the exciting Queens Gamble in the rearranged Alan Swinbank Bumper She is currently the shortest-priced British-trained contender for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper and looks to consolidate that position, with a second Listed success this afternoon.

Fakir and Halifax complete the field, with the latter making his debut for Grace Harris, having left the Jonjo O’Neill stable

Six go to post for the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase, with the top-weight again representing the stable of Olly Murphy. A two-time winning hurdler, African Dance made a successful chasing debut at Ayr in November 2021 and following a lengthy lay-off (448 days), has been left on the same mark. He shouldn’t mind the drying ground and goes up in trip for the first time

Jessie Lightfoot is the sole course winner in the field and she has won twice from six starts as a chaser Brought down when last seen, she is now 17lbs higher than when winning the novices’ handicap chase on this card a year ago, so needs to find further improvement.

Runner-up here on Boxing Day, Geryville has been in fairly consistent form for the past year and similar comments apply to Jaytee, who hasn’t been out of the first two in four chase starts. Ian Williams’ eight-year-old also filled the runners-up spot on his most recent start and runs off the same mark today, so should go well.

The evergreen Gwencily Berbas – now 12 – and the 10-year-old Diomede des Mottes make up the half-dozen, with the latter sporting first-time blinkers. Formerly trained by Dan Skelton, he has failed to complete in two of his three starts for Dr Richard Newland and hasn’t won since October 2019

ALAN SWINBANK MARES’ STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE

We are delighted to again be staging the annual running of the Listed Alan Swinbank Mares’ Bumper as our feature race this afternoon and warmly welcome Alan’s family and friends who have supported the race.

In a training career lasting well over 30 years Alan Swinbank conquered the world, but he liked nothing more than this journeys to Lincolnshire where his record at Market Rasen was second to none. Alan’s first winner as a licensed trainer was The Froddler in a Hunter Chase at Sedgefield in 1982 but it is for his exploits with globetrotting Collier Hill that he hit the headlines, winning 15 races in 8 countries including the Irish St Leger and high profile races in Canada and Hong Kong.

He enjoyed great success domestically as well - with his near 800 winners including horses like Turbo Linn and Alfie Flitts.

Of all Alan’s many qualities as a trainer his eye for a horse was one of the most outstanding - he had 25 winners here and many of those were in a Bumper - sending into battle a young horse he had nurtured.

And there have been few more emotional winners here than just days after he died when Alan’s partner Sally and his family were here to see Brecon Hill win the Bumper - so its more than fitting a race in his honour should be for the type of horse at which he excelled.

PLAY SMARTER

QUEENS GAMBLE can cement her status as one of the most exciting British bumper performers with a third victory She put a good field to bed with ease in a listed contest at Cheltenham in November and should be far too good again. Dysart Enos looked classy at Ludlow and should improve, while Mellificent and Alfie’s Princess can also play a part.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
