Kempton Park’s Retraining of Racehorses Horse For Courses Equine Ambassador CONEYGREE As part of National Racehorse Week in September 2024, Kempton Park were thrilled to announce Coneygree as our racecourse equine ambassador as part of the Retraining of Racehorse ‘Horses For Courses’ scheme. Trained by the late Mark Bradstock, Coneygree (stable name Max) made a winning racecourse debut at Uttoxeter in 2011 as a 4-year-old and raced 18 times before retiring in 2019 at the age of 12. Max ran at Kempton Park once in his career, running away with our Grade 1 Kauto Star Novice’s Chase in 2014 in the hands of Nico De Boinville just 3 months before their thrilling victory in the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, where Max became the ﬁrst novice to win the Gold Cup in nearly 40 years. Since retiring from the track, Max has taken to the show ring in Retraining of Racehorse classes and has taken part in numerous racecourse parades. He absolutely believes he is still ‘top-dog’ at the Bradstock yard where he is doted on and loves to be the centre of attention! Barney Clifford has been Clerk of the Course at Kempton Park since 2000 having retired from his own days as a jump jockey. 2025 will mark his 25th Christmas Festival and we asked him to pick his top 3 Christmas Festival moments from his time at Kempton Park. Harchibald winning the 2004 Christmas Hurdle The hugely popular hurdler Harchibald’s appearance at Kempton on 26th December 2004 came about after a conversation between Barney and trainer Noel Meade at a racecourse in Ireland where Barney insisted he must bring the horse over for the race. Noel’s reply went something like ‘ﬁne but you’ve got to ride him out,’ and so for the three days Harchibald was at Kempton Park, Barney did just that. It made the horses’ 1 ½ length victory over Rooster Booster, having been at one point 25 lengths behind the leader, even more special.

Kicking King winning the 2004 King George VI Chase Kicking King joined an illustrious roll of honour when taking back-to-back King George VI Chases in 2005 but it was the 2004 renewal that stands out for Barney. A conversation at Down Royal Racecourse in Ireland after Kicking King’s defeat in the Irish Champion Chase saw Barney sell the King George as the right race for the horse and Barney was conﬁdent enough to say ‘he can win it’ and win it he did.

Kauto Star winning his 5th King George VI Chase Kauto Star made history in 2011 when he was victorious in his ﬁfth King George VI Chase, having four in a row between 2006-2009. An achievement that wrote him into the sport’s history books would likely stick out in anyone’s mind, but for Barney it was also the reaction of the crowd that made the occasion memorable. A crowd of over 20,000 people had made their way to Kempton Park to cheer Kauto Star on and roar him home they did; ‘It was sensational, I’ve never heard anything like it.’ A sensational reception for a sensational horse.

REMEMBERING WAYWARD LAD The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the King George VI Chase come to be dominated by one family – the Dickinsons. Between them, they took the great race on six occasions between 1978 and 1985. It was Tony Dickinson who set the ball rolling with victories for Gay Spartan (1978) and Silver Buck (1979). Following the retirement of his son Michael as a jockey, he took over the training licence for Silver Buck’s second victory in 1980. A white Christmas in 1981 had caused the abandonment of that season’s King George VI Chase and by the time of the 1982 race Silver Buck had also added that year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup to his CV. He was the Evens Favourite to become the first triple winner of the Boxing Day highlight and the choice of stable jockey Robert Earnshaw. Among his rivals was a horse called Wayward Lad, his stable companion. A handsome bay gelding and expert jumper, Wayward Lad came into the race as a progressive young chaser who had begun the season with two great efforts under big weights in handicaps at Cheltenham. Starting at 7-2 and ridden for the first time by reigning champion jockey John Francome, Wayward Lad got the better of Fifty Dollars More and Silver Buck to take the honours in a tremendous finish. Robert Earnshaw was in the saddle for the 1983 running and it was an easier victory as he overcame Brown Chamberlin to justify 11-8 Favouritism. By 1984, Michael Dickinson had turned his attention to Flat racing and it was his mother Monica who now held the training licence at their base in Harewood, West Yorkshire. However, Wayward Lad was not at his best in that renewal of the King George VI Chase and finished third of the three runners behind Burrough Hill Lad. Going into the 1985 King George VI Chase, Wayward Lad was 10 rising 11 and relatively unfancied at 12-1. Ridden by Graham Bradley, he rolled back the years to defeat Combs Ditch and create history by becoming the first triple winner of the Boxing Day highlight. Away from Kempton Park, Wayward Lad was twice placed in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. In 1983, he formed part of Michael Dickinson’s “Famous Five” when finishing third behind stable companion Bregawn and in 1986 was famously just caught in the final strides by Dawn Run. An amazingly tough and consistent performer who won 28 of his 55 starts, Wayward Lad earned an honourable retirement when successful in his final race at Aintree in 1987. His retirement was spent in the USA, where Michael Dickinson had relocated to train, and he passed away aged 28 in 2003. The great horse is remembered at Kempton Park today with the running of the Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices' Chase. By Ben Cox

TRAINER: KEIRAN BURKE JOCKEY: HARRY COBDEN OWNER: THIS TIME NEXT YEAR MAYBE Soul Icon was a well-beaten last of four in the Henry VIII at Sandown but proved much happier back in handicap company. With the race run to suit on the drier ground here, he stayed on best to record a new PB. This looked to a very competitive race on paper but it was the outsider for the six that proved a surprise winner at 16/1. The Alan King-trained superstar Edwardstone was in front with three fences left to jump but had to give a huge chunk of weight away to the up and coming Soul Icon. That proved too much of a challenge as Harry Cobden took his mount to the far rail and as soon as he touched down over the last, the race was put to bed in a matter of strides. Edwardstone stayed on well for second and the slightly disappointing Martator was a further seven lengths back in third.

REMEMBERING DESERT ORCHID

THE LIFE STORY DESERT ORCHID

It is almost 42 years ago – January 21st 1983 to be precise – that a certain grey horse made his racecourse debut at Kempton Park. Easy to back at 50-1, he proved very headstrong in the Walton Novices’ Hurdle and after tiring rapidly in the closing stages he parted company with jockey Colin Brown at the final flight. The horse in question was Desert Orchid and few would have predicted then that this gelding by Grey Mirage would go on to be one of the greatest steeplechasers of all-time. Owned and bred by the Burridge family and trained throughout his career by David Elsworth, Desert Orchid showed some promise later that season and really came into his own in the 1983/84 campaign, when he won six of his eight starts including the prestigious Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown Park and the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton. Following a disappointing season over hurdles in 1984/85, he was sent over fences in the 1985/86 season and made a very successful transition, winning his first four chases and finishing third in the Arkle Novices’ Chase over two miles at the Cheltenham Festival. The 1986/87 season began brightly and the decision was taken by connections to go for the King George VI Chase. Starting at 16-1, he was ridden for the first time by Simon Sherwood with his regular partner Colin Brown opting to ride stable companion Combs Ditch. In a strong field which also included three-time King George VI Chase winner Wayward Lad and Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Forgive ‘N Forget, any doubts about Desert Orchid’s stamina over three miles were quickly dispelled as he made all to win by 15 lengths. It is probably fair to say Desert Orchid was not at his best when surprisingly beaten into second by French challenger Nupsala in the 1987 King George VI Chase but he returned to Sunbury-On-Thames to win the Boxing Day highlight for a then-record four times with further victories in 1988, 1989 and 1990. Simon Sherwood rode him in 1988 and following his retirement Richard Dunwoody was aboard in 1989 and 1990. Of course, Desert Orchid was always about more than the King George VI Chase and in amongst his Kempton Park successes there were famous victories in the Whitbread Gold Cup (1988), Irish Grand National (1990) and the most memorable of all, the Cheltenham Gold Cup (1989). In all, he won 34 of his 71 starts, amassing over £650,000 in prize money. As it had begun, Desert Orchid’s career came to an end at Kempton Park when he fell three out as a 12-year-old in the 1991 King George VI Chase. He was promptly retired and lived out his days with trainer David Elsworth and spending his summer holidays with the Burridge family in Leicestershire. He lived on to the grand old age of 27, passing away on December 13th 2006 at Egerton House Stables in Newmarket. The galloping grey who lit up Christmas at Kempton Park, is commemorated with a magnificent statue by Philip Blacker overlooking the parade ring and by today’s Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Handicap Chase which is run in his honour.
