Virgin Bet Raceday Preview

1:33pm - Gold Cast, who was a €300,000 purchase, was pulled up on her British debut at Newbury. She has been given a few months off and must be respected here for the Paul Nicholls yard. Jollie Dame was well beaten by the runaway winner Burds Of A Feather in a bumper at Warwick. She has shown some promise in her three bumper starts and should be in the mix if she takes well to hurdles. Burning Embers looks the first string of the Skelton horses. She wasn’t beaten too far in an Ascot bumper last month and should improve from that run on her hurdling debut. 2:08pm - Tapley (engaged at Fakenham Friday) was a narrow 2nd to Barlovento here on Boxing Day. He goes well on good ground and if he takes his place in this race, he should be involved for the Suzy Smith yard. Chuggy has been climbing his way up the weights after a few impressive wins but was beaten at odds of 4/7 last time out at Aintree but there were fences omitted that day due to low sun. He is still a lightly raced 6-year-old and could have a bright future over fences. Secret Des Dieux was an easy winner on heavy ground last month at Huntingdon. He goes up 7lbs but finished 2 ½ lengths behind Mambonumberfive (who has now a chase rating of 146) at Newbury. He may prefer more cut in the ground but has his chances even off top weight. 14.40 – Royal Infantry will come here full of confidence after running a strong 2nd here last month and good to soft ground definitely will boost the Skelton trained gelding’s chance. One that might fancy the firmer ground is Turndlightsdownlow, who is arguably in the best form of the lot, winning very comfortably over C&D twice last year and a handful of 2nd place on either side. Fasol could also be the threat here. Despite 2 recent disappointing runs on this course, he looks to be good value to bounce back to his winning best for the Nicholls team. 15:18 – Califet En Vol is probably the one to beat here, switching from National Hunt to Chasing with ease, continuing the strong form and winning well here a couple of weeks ago. Henderson & Nico come in fine form on the back of a successful Cheltenham festival also, which will be noted by backers. Blueking D’oroux will be fancied, is up in weights again since underwhelming on boxing day but is due another big run. Barlovento also has potential to cause an upset if the ground stays firm. 15:53 - The likely favourite Soomaroy is the one to be on here, won easily enough last time at Hereford when odds on, the step up in trip should pose no problems. Etna Bianco looks the likely runner up, he has been consistent so far this season and should put in another solid performance. 16:28 - A competitive three mile handicap chase, the main protagonists look to be Doctor Ken and Charles Ritz who look set to both run well judged on recent performances. However Pedley Wood near the bottom of the handicap, lightly raced this term, is sure to give the Joe Tizzard yard a good run for their money. 17:03 - The card finishes with a junior national hunt flat race, so not much to go on here form wise. The obvious contenders are Prince Rupert from the Nicky Henderson yard, Max D’Aairy a Paul Nicholls runner and the once raced Galante De Vassy. Preference goes to Tom Symonds runner who should make her experience count.
