Kempton Park’s Retraining of Racehorses Horse For Courses Equine Ambassador CONEYGREE As part of National Racehorse Week in September 2024, Kempton Park were thrilled to announce Coneygree as our racecourse equine ambassador as part of the Retraining of Racehorse ‘Horses For Courses’ scheme. Trained by the late Mark Bradstock, Coneygree (stable name Max) made a winning racecourse debut at Uttoxeter in 2011 as a 4-year-old and raced 18 times before retiring in 2019 at the age of 12. Max ran at Kempton Park once in his career, running away with our Grade 1 Kauto Star Novice’s Chase in 2014 in the hands of Nico De Boinville just 3 months before their thrilling victory in the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, where Max became the ﬁrst novice to win the Gold Cup in nearly 40 years. Since retiring from the track, Max has taken to the show ring in Retraining of Racehorse classes and has taken part in numerous racecourse parades. He absolutely believes he is still ‘top-dog’ at the Bradstock yard where he is doted on and loves to be the centre of attention! Twas The Night Before Kempton Twas the night before Kempton and out on the course, Not a creature was stirring, not even a horse. The stands were in darkness, the weighing room bare, A warm breath of thunder lay thick in the air. The debris of Christmas spilled over from bins, While pine trees stood quietly shedding loose pins. All thoughts now turned eagerly back to one race, Counting down to the famous King George VI Chase. The bookies slept fitfully, mumbling numbers, With visions of pay-outs disturbing their slumbers, And jockeys who’d cleared every scrap from their plate, Dreamt of saunas and steam baths and ounces of weight. On the track, raindrops signalled the break of the storm, With a roar as if heaven itself had been torn, And what through the thundering sky should appear, But the hooves of past winners from glorious years. A splinter of lightening lit-up the night sky, So a lustre of silver could brighten each eye. The runners they galloped with manes flying free, Matching strides without harness in glad unity. More graceful than eagles the coursers they flew, With ears pricked as they heard a bright voice they all knew. These legendary chasers foretold he would come, Knowing Peter O’S would be calling them home. “Here’s Arkle with Mill House, and Dessie upsides, Wayward Lad, See More Business and Pendil out wide, One Man by The Fellow and here’s Kauto Star. It’s hats off to them all in their final hurrah!” The chargers swept onwards, relentless and strong, As the wave of an ocean rolls ever along. But the storm at its peak drove their hooves faster still, For these mystical steeds had a wish to fulfil. The winning post beckoned, for now it was time, And their whiskers reached out for the touch of the line. All at once rang the echoing peal of a bell, Round a track which was empty, released of its spell. The voice began fading, the air cooling fast, Just a whisper remained of the race which had passed. The trace of a hoofbeat, a vanishing neigh, As his final call came, “Now it’s horses away!” By Kathryn Trudgeon

Barney Clifford has been Clerk of the Course at Kempton Park since 2000 having retired from his own days as a jump jockey. 2025 will mark his 25th Christmas Festival and we asked him to pick his top 3 Christmas Festival moments from his time at Kempton Park. Harchibald winning the 2004 Christmas Hurdle The hugely popular hurdler Harchibald’s appearance at Kempton on 26th December 2004 came about after a conversation between Barney and trainer Noel Meade at a racecourse in Ireland where Barney insisted he must bring the horse over for the race. Noel’s reply went something like ‘ﬁne but you’ve got to ride him out,’ and so for the three days Harchibald was at Kempton Park, Barney did just that. It made the horses’ 1 ½ length victory over Rooster Booster, having been at one point 25 lengths behind the leader, even more special.

Kicking King winning the 2004 King George VI Chase Kicking King joined an illustrious roll of honour when taking back-to-back King George VI Chases in 2005 but it was the 2004 renewal that stands out for Barney. A conversation at Down Royal Racecourse in Ireland after Kicking King’s defeat in the Irish Champion Chase saw Barney sell the King George as the right race for the horse and Barney was conﬁdent enough to say ‘he can win it’ and win it he did.

Kauto Star winning his 5th King George VI Chase Kauto Star made history in 2011 when he was victorious in his ﬁfth King George VI Chase, having four in a row between 2006-2009. An achievement that wrote him into the sport’s history books would likely stick out in anyone’s mind, but for Barney it was also the reaction of the crowd that made the occasion memorable. A crowd of over 20,000 people had made their way to Kempton Park to cheer Kauto Star on and roar him home they did; ‘It was sensational, I’ve never heard anything like it.’ A sensational reception for a sensational horse.

Kempton Park’s 2025 highlights January We started off the year with a Royal Winner on the Synthetic Track in the form of Purple Rainbow trained by William Haggas. February Godolphin’s Opera Ballo won the “European Road to the Kentucky Derby” by 4 lengths and later went on to win the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes and the Heron Stakes in 2025. His most recent win was the Al Rashidiya (Group 2) in Meydan. March Kempton’s office team provided gardening equipment and tools to help the local community create their “community allotment”. We also provided benches for the keen gardeners to use. April We were delighted to host a Women in racing panel for Virgin Bet Spring Saturday. Panel guests included Gemma Waterhouse, Chief Operating Officer at Racing Welfare, Laura Perkins, veterinary nurse, Hayley Moore raceday presenter, and Emma Kaye founder of Walk Safe. May Kempton Park were delighted to open our brand new ‘Sensory Room’ – a dedicated space, located on the first floor of our Clubhouse, which provides a calm, safe and inclusive environment for any individual who needs it. The Sensory Room is available on all racedays and other non-racing event days ensuring continued support for those who may need it. June One Cup was introduced in June to combat single use plastic cups and help improve our sustainability here at Kempton and ultimately reduce landfill.

July The synthetic track was rejuvenated with 1000 tonnes of original specification poly track with a higher percentage of wax and fibre. August Kempton Park hosted Nepali Mela – an annual festival celebrating Nepalese Heritage, traditions and culture. We welcomed thousands to enjoy a wide range of events and activities. September Giavellotto ridden by Oisin Murphy and trained by Marco Botti won the Unibet September Stakes beating strong favourite Kalpana. He went on to be placed 4th in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and 2nd in the Hong Kong Vase. October In October 2025 D&M Tools celebrated 25 years of their Tool Show with us at Kempton Park! As always, the show was packed with stands from all major tool brands, live demonstrations, new products and exclusive show deals! November Kempton Park alumni Notable Speech adds the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile in Del Mar to his impressive CV having won his first three career starts on our synthetic track. December We hosted our first ever Christmas Community party with guests including Manor Mead School, Shooting Stars Charity, Wimbledon Greyhounds, White Lodge and the Mayor of Spelthorne. It was a huge success, with the highlight for many getting to see Coneygree our Kempton ambassador.

KEMPTON PARK BRINGS LOCAL COMMUNITY TOGETHER FOR FESTIVE CHRISTMAS PARTY Kempton Park Racecourse welcomed local community groups for a heart-warming Community Christmas Party on Tuesday 16th December, bringing together children, carers, volunteers and local representatives for an afternoon of festive cheer. The event welcomed a wide range of attendees including the Orange Class from Manor Mead School in Shepperton, White Lodge Centre, Wimbledon Greyhound Rescue Centre, Shooting Star Hospice and Fordbridge Veteran’s Centre. The Mayor and Mayoress of Spelthorne also attended, joining guests to celebrate the spirit of togetherness and community at this special time of year. A highlight of the afternoon was a special appearance from Coneygree, our much-loved Horses for Courses Ambassador. Guests and children were delighted to meet the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, feeding him carrots and enjoying a cuddle. Adding to the festive magic, Santa Claus made a surprise appearance, spreading Christmas cheer and gifting presents to the delight of the Orange Class children of Manor Mead School. Guests enjoyed a relaxed and inclusive festive atmosphere, with opportunities to socialise and celebrate the season alongside others from across the local area. The event aimed to recognise and give thanks to organisations and individuals who play a vital role in the community throughout the year. Kempton Park Racecourse is proud to host events that extend beyond racing, using its facilities to support local causes and bring people together. The pace quickened approaching the second last and you got the sense that the race was over as soon as he touched down from a clean jump over the last. He stormed home by 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Hyland who was no match for the impressive winner. A true jumping masterclass from The Jukebox Man and an excellent tactical ride from Ben Jones left connections delighted.

Turning for home, Nico de Boinville was the first to make his move aboard the defending champion, who quickened smartly approaching the final flight. Despite receiving a 7lb allowance, Lossiemouth could not bridge the gap, finishing two and a half lengths behind a resurgent Constitution Hill, whose return to winning ways confirmed his status right at the top of the 2m hurdling division.

THE KING GEORGE VI CHASE STATS, TRENDS & PREVIEW Background The King George VI Chase has its origins in the Manor Selling Chase, a threemile contest staged at Kempton Park in February. The course executive had planned to honour the incoming monarch, Edward VIII, with a new feature contest run in his honour. Edward VIII ascended the throne in January 1936 but in December of the same year he abdicated in order to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson. To celebrate the accession to the throne of King George VI, Edward VIII’s brother and grandfather of King Charles III, the Manor Selling Chase became the King George VI Chase at the February meeting of 1937. The King George VI Chases of 1937 and 1938 were relatively modest contests and from 1939 to 1945 there was no racing at Kempton Park while it was used as a POW camp during World War II. On the resumption of racing in 1946, the King George VI Chase was transferred to become the highlight of the Boxing Day programme. The move proved highly successful with large crowds and the race’s stature improved beyond recognition. Staged over three miles, the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase is the mid-season highlight in the three-mile chase category and is a Grade One contest. It forms the second leg of The Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown, sandwiched between the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in November and the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Racegoers must abide by any regulations, including the observance of designated no-drinking areas and dress code. The dress code is casual in all areas, however, ripped denim, sports shorts and football shirts are not permitted.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION Kempton Park Racecourse has signiﬁcantly enhanced Safety and Security measures this year to enhance your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; ﬁrstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance. Secondly should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via an emergency evacuation gate, to the main assembly points; the North Entrance, the South Entrance or the Holly Tree Gate. If these areas are compromised the evacuation will be directed to the centre of the course, where you will receive further instruction. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember; take your belongings with you under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.

HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTICE The Racecourse would be grateful if racegoers would observe all Health and Safety requirements whilst at Kempton Park Racecourse. The Emergency Exits from the Bars onto the Grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would appreciate it if Racegoers would not stop in this area. We would also be grateful if only those that are Disabled use the Disabled Viewing Ramp and that Parents keep a close eye on children and prevent them from climbing on the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the FIRST AID room is located opposite the Kauto Star Bar. Public access is prohibited to the Centre Course.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Kempton Park Racecourse employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualiﬁed paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment.This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
