THE NIGHT BEFORE KEMPTON Twas the night before Kempton and out on the course, Not a creature was stirring, not even a horse. The stands were in darkness, the weighing room bare, A warm breath of thunder lay thick in the air. The debris of Christmas spilled over from bins, While pine trees stood quietly shedding loose pins. All thoughts now turned eagerly back to one race, Counting down to the famous King George VI Chase. The bookies slept fitfully, mumbling numbers, With visions of pay-outs disturbing their slumbers, And jockeys who’d cleared every scrap from their plate, Dreamt of saunas and steam baths and ounces of weight. On the track, raindrops signalled the break of the storm, With a roar as if heaven itself had been torn, And what through the thundering sky should appear, But the hooves of past winners from glorious years. A splinter of lightening lit-up the night sky, So a lustre of silver could brighten each eye. The runners they galloped with manes flying free, Matching strides without harness in glad unity. More graceful than eagles the coursers they flew, With ears pricked as they heard a bright voice they all knew. These legendary chasers foretold he would come, Knowing Peter O’S would be calling them home. “Here’s Arkle with Mill House, and Dessie upsides, Wayward Lad, See More Business and Pendil out wide, One Man by The Fellow and here’s Kauto Star. It’s hats off to them all in their final hurrah!” The chargers swept onwards, relentless and strong, As the wave of an ocean rolls ever along. But the storm at its peak drove their hooves faster still, For these mystical steeds had a wish to fulfil. The winning post beckoned, for now it was time, And their whiskers reached out for the touch of the line. All at once rang the echoing peal of a bell, Round a track which was empty, released of its spell. The voice began fading, the air cooling fast, Just a whisper remained of the race which had passed. LOOKING BACK AT THE KING GEORGE VI CHASE 10, 20, 30, 40 & 50 YEARS AGO 1973 – Pendil Owner: Cynthia Swallow Trainer: Fred Winter Having won impressively in 1972, Pendil was a red-hot 30-100 Favourite to repeat his success 12 months’ later. He gave his supporters little cause for concern, coming home seven lengths clear of Inkslinger. His jockey Richard Pitman recalls: “He was brilliant, the most superb jumper. You can’t go without your horse and to be able to ride a horse that’s running away all the time through a race is just fantastic. He was a very, very good horse.”

1983 – Wayward Lad Owner: Shirley Thewlis & Les Abbott Trainer: Michael Dickinson Wayward Lad is in the history books as the first horse to win the King George VI Chase three times. Having been partnered to victory by John Francome for his initial victory in 1982 and by Graham Bradley for his third win in 1985, it was Robert Earnshaw who was in the saddle for his second success in 1983. That second success saw Wayward Lad start 11-8 Favourite and comfortably defeat Brown Chamberlin by five lengths. Earnshaw remembers: “From declaration day I was going to win! I was fairly confident and through the race I was quite confident. I don’t remember him as not travelling through the race - he was just settled and going as well as I wanted.”

1993 – Barton Bank Owner: Jenny Mould Trainer: David Nicholson Starting at 9-2, Barton Bank put up one of the gamest performances ever seen in the contest when making virtually all in 1993. Facing an ominous challenge from Bradbury Star, Barton Bank kept finding more for Adrian Maguire and held on to win by a head. Maguire says: “He was flat to the boards going to the last and I could see Declan (Murphy, rider of Bradbury Star) on the outside. I let my lad drift over to him because I felt like Declan had me. My lad thankfully jumped it (the final fence) well and he battled to the line.”

Edredon Bleu

2003 – Edredon Bleu Owner: Jim Lewis Trainer: Henrietta Knight Despite being best known as a two-miler, Edredon Bleu recorded one of the two biggest wins of his career as an 11-year-old in the 2003 running which made him one of the race’s three oldest winners. Starting at 25-1, Edredon Bleu was always near the head of affairs and ran on gamely to take the honours by a length and a quarter. His jockey Jim Culloty remembers: “They were talking about retiring him and they brought him back for one more go to see if he had a bit of sparkle – he then won ﬁve in a row when he was 11 and getting a bit long in the tooth. He was a star to come back in and do that when he was kind of a forgotten horse.”

2013 – Silviniaco Conti Owner:Potensis Bloodstock Ltd & Chris Giles Trainer: Paul Nicholls Responsible for two of trainer Paul Nicholls’ record 13 triumphs in the contest, Silviniaco Conti’s ﬁrst King George win came as a seven-year-old in 2013. Starting at 7-2, he was given a superbly cool ride by Noel Fehily who timed his challenge to perfection to overhaul leader Cue Card and go on to win by three and a half lengths. Fehily remembers: “My lad kind of nodded at the back of the third last and I thought he has gone. But actually, when I picked him up, he grabbed the bit and started to go again. I thought I’ve got a chance here and Cue Card tied up and I suppose my lad got going. He winged the second last and won well in the end.” Television racing presenter Rishi Persad caught up with Richard Pitman, Robert Earnshaw, Adrian Maguire, Jim Culloty and Noel Fehily to talk about their King George VI Chase wins. This was unfortunately his final win before suffering a fatal injury on the gallops last month and thoughts go out to connections. The nine-year-old had accomplished the most over hurdles but hadn’t exactly looked a natural chaser in his two starts over fences. However, he showed much improved form here and jumped well with the first time headgear aiding his cause. Held up in rear, he picked his way through the field and drew right away from the well-fancied McFabulous, who beat him at Newbury on quicker ground previously. Both Gelino Bello and Galia Des Liteaux were well-fancied before the off but neither finished the race which left third place open to the rank outsider Mortlach.

He’s clearly one of the best British novices around.

A strong travelling-type who is versatile on all ground.

Although not well found in the market, Marble Sands could be one to follow at a bigger price. This Listed winner of hurdles made a ﬁne start to his chasing career at Ayr and jumped well over a shorter trip than ideal. He barely came out of second gear as he took the lead four out and sailed over the last, going further and further clear without Nico moving a muscle. He proved he was in a class of his own, as he did all season, and had stablemate and two-time winner of this race Epatante 17 lengths back in second. Highway One O Two picked up third place, a further six and a half lengths behind, and he in turn was ahead of Sceau Royal and the pulled up Metier. Can Constitituion Hill return to this season in the same form and add another Grade 1 to his almighty tally this afternoon?

THE KING GEORGE VI CHASE STATS, TRENDS & PREVIEW Background The King George VI Chase has its origins in the Manor Selling Chase, a threemile contest staged at Kempton Park in February. The course executive had planned to honour the incoming monarch, Edward VIII, with a new feature contest run in his honour. Edward VIII ascended the throne in January 1936 but in December of the same year he abdicated in order to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson. To celebrate the accession to the throne of King George VI, Edward VIII’s brother and grandfather of King Charles III, the Manor Selling Chase became the King George VI Chase at the February meeting of 1937. The King George VI Chases of 1937 and 1938 were relatively modest contests and from 1939 to 1945 there was no racing at Kempton Park while it was used as a POW camp during World War II. On the resumption of racing in 1946, the King George VI Chase was transferred to become the highlight of the Boxing Day programme. The move proved highly successful with large crowds and the race’s stature improved beyond recognition. Staged over three miles, the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase is the mid-season highlight in the three-mile chase category and is a Grade One contest. It forms the second leg of The Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown, sandwiched between the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in November and the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Conclusion Six head to post for this year’s renewal of the prestigious King George VI Chase, headed by Allaho who finally makes it to Kempton. Paul Townend skips riding Facile Vega at Leopardstown to come here for a sole ride, suggesting the two-time Ryanair Chase winner will be primed for this. Bravemansgame is back to defend his title and has proved his love for this track,while Paul Nicholls also saddles 2020 winner Frodon who is the rank outsider. The Real Whacker was unable to defy top-weight in the Paddy Power Gold Cup but back over his preferred trip, he can use his strong front-running tactics to his advantage. Top class two miler Shiskin will need to prove his stamina once again and if finding his rhythm in the early stages, he can not be underestimated. The field in concluded by Hewick, who also travels from across the pond, but he will need to improve on his two starts this season.

He looked a high profile chaser since his victory in the Kauto Star 12 months ago and it was only right before the off that he was thrown off the top spot in the market by the likable L’Homme Presse. Not as keen as he has been in the past, Harry Cobden got his mount into his usual jumping rhythm and he was quick and effective through the air. He jumped with fluency positioned on the outside and was gifted a huge advantage when L’Homme Press fell, touching down over the last. The battle already looked won at that stage though and he powered up the home straight to win convincingly by 14 lengths from Royale Pagaille. 2020 winner Frodon showed he still has what it takes at the top level to finish third, a further four and a half lengths behind.
