Thank you for joining us at Kelso Racecourse for a programme which features the Church House Investments Buccleuch Cup –the race with the longest history at Kelso, having been staged here since 1885 when the purse was 25 Sovereigns.
We are indebted to today’s race sponsors for their continued support of racing at Kelso In addition to Church House Investment Management, generous backers of the Buccleuch Cup, please show your appreciation for The Royal Caledonian Hunt, Racing TV, and the friends and family of the late Malcolm Scott. We’d also like to thank all the guests at the professional services networking event, in the Final Furlong Marquee, who are helping to raise funds for the Country Food Trust this afternoon.
Racing at Kelso wouldn’t be possible without the enthusiastic support of racehorse owners, trainers, staff and jockeys. We’d like to thank the connections of all the runners on today’s programme, particularly the amateur ridden contenders for the Buccleuch Cup – a race which defines the sporting spirit of racing at Kelso It may not be the most valuable race in our calendar, but it is certainly one of the dearest to our hearts Thank you for choosing to bring your horses to Kelso.
The racecourse staff and Directors wish you a fun afternoon at the races, and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

How to Bet
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number
2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

TRAINER & JOCKEY FORM
ADAM SCOTT
“Adam Scott was one of the last of the old Bohemians. The pattern was lost and the mould destroyed when such as he passed from the scene”.
Today we celebrate the valorous life of Adam Scott (1875 – 1925), a north-country soldier and sportsman whose dramatic story, woven like a golden thread into horseracing’s rich heritage, ended in a tragic fall at Kelso
Born at Lesbury, near Alnwick, the son of a wealthy farmer, Adam was amongst the first to volunteer for the Boer War in the newly-formed Imperial Yeomanry. He served in South Africa with great distinction in the Northumberland Hussars. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in February 1901 at Hartebeestfontein, for continuous and conspicuous gallantry throughout the day. He was also ‘mentioned in despatches’, before returning home in June 1901.
On returning to Alnham, Adam owned and trained a string of racehorses, winning the Scottish Grand National in 1907, riding in the Grand National of 1909, and winning the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1921. Saddling more than forty winners between 1907 and 1924, he was a regular at the United Border Hunt meeting at Kelso – a fixture that moved to the modern day location when jump racing commenced here in 1883.
Prior to 1883, the racecourse was used only for flat racing - having been established as Scotland’s first purpose-built racecourse in 1823 when it regularly hosted fixtures sponsored by the Royal Caledonian Hunt – whose members remain important supporters of racing in Scotland to this day.
The feature race of today’s programme, The Buccleuch Cup, was first run at Kelso in 1885 with a purse of 25 sovereigns and was restricted to horses qualified with the Duke’s hounds. Adam, who regularly followed the Coquetdale and Percy Packs, rode in the Buccleuch Cup three times, but without success. His great ambition was to win the Northumberland Plate.
Established in 1827, The Duke of Buccleuch’s Hounds were initially based in St Boswells, before moving to Greenwells at the foot of the Eildon Hills. Following changes to legislation, the hounds have adapted to drag hunting, avoiding any contact with wild mammals and, instead, following a scent (or “drag”) laid by runner
Nant Coch was 8th of 14 in 1922, Jazz Band a half-length second in 1923, only to go one better the following year, winning by two lengths amid scenes of great jubilation for a local winner.
Bob Todd, a well-known racing plater, knew Adam well and describes his friend as “a dour north-countryman, tough, hard-bitten and blunt of speech”. Adam was handy with his fists, a skilled horseman and a first class shot. Todd remembered extricating Adam from a pub brawl in Leicester Square, when, having dropped one man, he was preparing to take on all-comers.
But his friends and contemporaries saw a man with a heart of gold. It was his habit to carry large sums of cash on him at the racecourse. If a friend appeared down on their luck, they would find Adam quietly pressing a few folded notes into their palm. Fond of a drink, he was never slow to stand his round at the bar.
In another act of generosity, having won four races in one day at Rothbury, and knowing that funds were low and the meeting in danger of being dropped, Adam returned the stake money he had won.
Todd recalls Adam expressing his wish to go out in the saddle, “Think of it, man – astride a game horse, with your colours fluttering and your blood tingling. Better to die like that than in bed”.
Tragically, Adam got his wish sooner than anyone wanted. On 31 March 1925, riding in the Springwood Chase here at Kelso, his horse ‘Command’ fell at the third last fence. Adam was thrown and died almost instantly.
He is buried, booted, spurred and in his racing colours of light blue with a maroon cap, in the churchyard of St Michael and All Angels, Alnham. His funeral was attended by family, friends and admirers from all walks of life, reflecting his popularity with all.
Adam’s Distinguished Conduct Medal was purchased on behalf of the regiment by Colonel James Royds, TD, Honorary Colonel of the Northumberland Hussars, in 2020. It is on display at Charge! The Story of England’s Northern Cavalry, at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle.

THE ROYAL CALEDONIAN HUNT
The Club was instituted at Hamilton in 1777 under the title ‘the Hunters Club’ but the name was changed the following year to ‘The Caledonian Hunt. On the occasion of the visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822, His Majesty became the Patron of the Hunt whose members gave a ball in his honour in Edinburgh. Since that time, the royal prefix has been added and the reigning Sovereign continued as Patron until 2002. HRH The Princess Royal was appointed as Honorary Preses in 1974 and succeeded as Patron in 2002. HRH The Duke of Kent was appointed as Honorary Preses in 1985.
There are 70 gentlemen members, all with Scottish roots and who enjoy racing and/or hunting. They dine annually in Edinburgh. The Hunt meets each year at a different Scottish Racecourse The running of the first race was at Kelso in 1779. The Royal Caledonian Hunt Club Cup was first competed for at Perth in 1818 and was won by the Earl of Eglington’s “Sans Culottes”.

The handicapper has taken a swipe at WOLFBURG, raising him 11lb for his wide-margin victory at Carlisle, but there was plenty to like about the way he did the job that day and he’s open to further improvement in this sphere. Erne River has slipped to a dangerous mark and looks the one most likely to make a race of it with Wolfburg, given that Dare To Shout, Hudson de Grugy and Walk On Quest all underperformed last time, while Cadell is out of sorts and Red Happy has been off for over a year

SAFETY INFORMATION
A day at Kelso Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving.
The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
Alcohol & Substance Abuse
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Kelso Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits
Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Police Scotland.
Slips, Trips, Falls
We’ve commenced a series of developments at the racecourse and we’re gradually making the site more accessible for all, with smoother surfaces and ramps where we have differences in gradient
Please note that the site is not flat and there may be differences in levels, particularly between old surfaces, and surfaces which have recently been renewed. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day
Fences, Walls & Barriers
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment
Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight
Horses
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track –but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically
Fires
We’re proud of Kelso’s reputation for providing a warm welcome and the unique feature provided by the real fires that we light in the listed Grandstand and in the log-burning braziers surrounding the Parade Ring.
Our Fires have no brains – so please use your own. Fires are hot and there is a danger of burning yourself if you touch the fire or the surrounding metalwork Please do not put anything in the fires or fireplaces
Children
We welcome many children to Kelso races. Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask that all children are appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above
