Huntingdon Racecard - Thursday 5th February

Page 1

The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2026

On behalf of everyone here at Huntingdon Racecourse, I am delighted to welcome you to our Sidney Banks and Lady Protectress Raceday.

This fixture holds a special place in the history of the racecourse, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle held in 1976, a race that has grown to become one of the highlights of our season. Over the past five decades, the race has established a proud reputation within the National Hunt calendar

We are extremely grateful to our race sponsors, Lockwood Premium British Smocks, and to Jacob Lockwood, for the valued support of the fixture. Their backing plays an important role in enabling us to stage a day of racing that reflects both the heritage and quality associated with the two trophies up for grabs today.

Days such as today would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the entire Huntingdon Racecourse team. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to all our staff, from the grounds team and racing office to sales, hospitality service, operations and raceday team whose commitment and professionalism ensure that each raceday runs smoothly and that our racegoers are warmly welcomed. Their efforts behind the scenes are central to the success of fixtures like this one.

The card is further strengthened by the Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase, another race with strong links to the course and one that consistently attracts competitive and high-quality fields. Together, these races promise an afternoon of compelling action and underline Huntingdon’s role within the National Hunt programme.

Whether you are a regular visitor or joining us for the first time, we hope you enjoy both the racing and the atmosphere. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us, and we hope this special anniversary raceday proves to be a memorable one.

Enjoy the afternoon and best wishes from everyone at Huntingdon Racecourse.

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

Sidney Banks was born on 30th July 1905, the son of a small farmer. He was educated at Kimbolton and Culford School near Bury St Edmunds. He left school as soon as he could and immediately looked to start trading in one way or another. He married Heather when he was 33 years old, and they had three children: Michael, Richard, and Judith. He began by keeping a few pigs before developing a strong interest in grain trading, which he did very successfully. Sidney C Banks Ltd was based in Sandy, Bedfordshire, and over many years he built a thriving business across the south of England. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1973.

Sadly, Sidney passed away in March 1974 shortly afterthe flotation, but the business continued to grow under the leadership of his sons, Michael and Richard, and now forms part ofthe Frontier Group, one ofthe largest agricultural businesses in the UK.

Sidney’s main interest outside of business was horses. He was Master ofthe Cambridgeshire Foxhounds and a highly successful permit trainer for many years, training his horses in Sandy alongside the grain business. His most prolific horse was Lucky Purchase, which won both the Cheltenham and Liverpool Fox Hunters in the same year (1947). His most successful winner financially was French Design, trained by the legendary George Todd, who won the Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket in 1954. Other notable horses he owned included Double Red and Stipend on the flat, along with Dandy Scot and Piranha over jumps.

He had a long affiliation with Huntingdon Racecourse, where he served as a steward. In lateryears, his son Michael continued the family’s racing involvement and was Chairman of Huntingdon Racecourse for many years.

As a family, we are delighted to be able to celebrate 50 years ofthe Sidney Banks Hurdle in his memory.

Though turned over at a very skinny price back at that Berkshire venue during the Christmas period, Act of Innocence was only beaten 3/4-length bythewinner, whowas receiving 20lb and subsequentlyfinishedthird in a Cheltenham Grade 2, and this step up in trip will be right up his street. The New Standard In British Country wear -

I didn’t start Lockwood Premium British Smocks because I fancied “launching a brand”. I started it because I was fed up of being cold and wet when the job didn’t allow for either. In the military, you learn quickly that the kit either works or it doesn’t and when it doesn’t, you pay for it in discomfort, distraction, and performance. I wanted something simple: a proper smock, built to take a beating, keep the weather out, and still look sharp enough to be proud of.

That first answer became the Brecon Smock named after a landscape that doesn’t care how motivated you are. Brecon is wind, rain, grit, and long days where your layers matter. The Brecon was designed with function first: tough fabric, practical pockets, real-world details, and the sort of quiet robustness soldiers respect. No gimmicks. No pretending. Just kit made to earn its place.

But something happened once the first orders went out. Almost immediately, lads from the Army especially the ones from proper country backgrounds started messaging me asking for plain colours they could wear outside of work. Same smock, same build quality… just something that fitted in at the yard, on the farm, or down the pub after a day grafting. That’s when it properly clicked: I hadn’t just made a decent bit of military kit I’d accidentally built something brilliant for the wider British outdoors.

I’m the son of a farmer, and that grounding still shapes how I see clothing. My mum’s been around horses and closely connected to farming for most of my life, and that world teaches you fast: there’s no pause button for weather, no hiding from early starts, and no patience for kit that can’t keep up. Yard work at dawn, feeding, mucking out, checking fences, standing by a horsebox in sideways rain it all demands the same thing: clothing that works, day after day, without drama.

And then there’s my mum and racing. She’s been around it since she was a teenage girl, and it’s always been part of our family story. Since COVID and since I left the Cavalry we’ve made it our yearly tradition to go to Cheltenham together. For us, it isn’t just a day out; it’s tradition, atmosphere, and that uniquely British mix of hard-working people, sharp kit, and a shared respect for the land, the horses, and the community around them

That’s where Lockwood found its natural home. The country market didn’t “change” the brand it revealed what it was always meant to be: British-made outerwear for people who live in demanding environments. Whether that’s on exercise in driving rain, on a farm in winter, at the yard before first light, or trackside on a blustery race day, the requirement is the same: reliable kit, made properly, that looks the part.

Everything I make is rooted in that philosophy hard-wearing, functional, and unapologetically British. Built from the same mindset that keeps soldiers moving and country people working: get it done, do it right, and carry yourself with pride while you’re at it.
