Good afternoon and welcome to the opening day of Hamilton Park’s 100-year centenary season.
There’s always a sense of excitement amongst the whole team as we prepare to open our gates for the first time each year, and we’re delighted to be partnered with Aspire Cleaning & Facilities as the title sponsors of our first fixture in 2026.
To mark 100 years of racing here on Bothwell Road, we have planned the richest and highest quality of race programme ever to be staged at Hamilton Park with total prize money set to exceed £1.74M, which represents an increase of over £100,000 on last year’s record prize money. This is once again offered across 18 fixtures, having deferred a fixture to ensure that all bar one of our racedays are scheduled as seven race cards.
This year’s programme continues to see investment in prize money at all levels, with every fixture due to be run for at least 25% above BHA minimum values, rising to 141% for our Sunday Series fixture, whilst more than half of our races will be staged at Class 4 or above All races will be run for at least £1,500 above the new BHA minimum values, resulting in all races being run for no less than £7,000 with 52% of the programme due to be run for £10,000 or more.
We are delighted to once again play host to the Sky Bet Sunday Series which moves to the earlier date of Sunday 17 May, with a total prize fund of £215,550. Elsewhere in the programme we have increased the prize money for the British EBF Glasgow Listed Stakes by 45% to £80,000, whilst the historic Lanark Silver Bell Heritage Handicap remains our richest race of the season with prize money increased to £103,000.
The Hamilton Park team have been working incredibly hard over the winter to get us ready for this historic season, with further upgrades to the Weighing Room and facilities for Jockey’s as well as a new surface being installed in the Parade Ring and Winner’s Enclosure being just two of the key developments. My thanks go to the entire Hamilton Park team for their efforts in preparing for this season. The most striking new feature around the grounds is the Sir Ian Good Memorial Sculpture, which has been commissioned in honour of our late chairman Sir Ian Good, as the centre piece of our centenary celebrations. This beautiful stainless-steel sculpture is positioned between the grandstand and the hotel, so do take the time to pay it a visit and maybe even touch the horseshoe for luck!
We’re set to see some competitive racing this afternoon with the 2.40pm race, the £30,000 Heineken Buttonhook Handicap (Class 3) being shown live on ITV Racing. The 1m 5f start is just behind the Winning Line and makes for a great spectacle as the horses leap from the stalls and head away from the grandstand. At 3.35pm our attention will turn briefly to Newmarket for the Betfred 1000 Guineas, to see who will claim one of Britain’s five Classic races. We’ll be showing away racing from Newmarket and Salisbury on the screens around the course throughout the afternoon, and I wish all of today’s runners and riders the very best of luck.
Our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors – Aspire Cleaning & Facilities, Heineken, Darley, European Breeders Fund, Tommy Murray & Family, Racing TV, and of course our very own Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park. Your support is greatly appreciated, and I wish you and your guests a wonderful afternoon with us today
Have a great day and I hope you start the season with a winner or two!
Kind regards

Racing Jargon Buster
Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.
ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next
ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface
AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status
APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding

CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old
COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track
DAM mother of a horse
DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5
FILLY female horse up to four years old
FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year
FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)
GELDING castrated horse

JUVENILE two-year-old horse
MAIDEN horse which has not won a race
MARE female horse five years and over
MONKEY betting parlance for £500

OFF THE BIT/OFF THE BRIDLE describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth
ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit
OVER THE TOP where a horse is said to have gone if he has passed his peak for the season
PACE ‘up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders
PADDOCK area of the racecourse incorporating the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner’s enclosure
PATTERN the elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed
PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published

PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing
PONY betting parlance for £25
RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse
RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle
SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse
SIRE father of a horse
SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod

YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth
Sir Ian Good Memorial Sculpture
Commissioned in 2026 to mark Hamilton Park’s 100th year of racing, this memorial sculpture honours the late Sir Ian Good in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Hamilton Park, Scottish Racing, and the racing industry as a whole.
Sir Ian served on the Board from 1990 and as Chairman from 1999 until his passing in 2023. Under his leadership, Hamilton Park developed into one of the UK’s leading independent racecourses, including the addition of the on-site Hampton by Hilton hotel in 2019. He also played a key role nationally as founding Chairman of Scottish Racing, and held senior positions with the Racing Foundation, the Tote, and the Jockey Club.
In collaboration with the Good family, the sculpture has been created by renowned sculptor Michael Turner who specialises in creating unique, handcrafted artwork using marine grade stainless steel. With the working title of ‘A Dynamic Force’, each individual panel of stainless steel has been shaped by hand to create a sculpture that embodies the energy and excitement of horse racing, showcasing the power and grace of the horse in motion alongside the unique harmony that exists between horse and jockey.
Located between the Hampton by Hilton Hotel and the Sir Ian Good Grandstand, this sculpture stands as a lasting tribute to his vision, leadership, and legacy
The design includes subtle tributes to Sir Ian’s life and legacy, so please do visit the sculpture to see them for yourself.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This contest is a Novice Stakes run over a distance of five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3) (GBBPlus RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PRECISE was impressive in the Fillies’ Mile over C&D when last seen and should be hard to beat with further improvement on the cards this year Venetian Sun wasn’t seen to best effect behind the selection when losing her unbeaten record in the Moyglare and may provide the main threat, with the fact her dam stayed 1 1/4m suggesting 1m should be within range. The selection’s stablemate True Love, exciting maiden winner Abashiri and Inis Mor, who shaped well in the Nell Gwyn, complete the shortlist

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and 68 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be
to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

THE CAROLYN MURRAY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty
usually 6lb

THE HAMPTON BY HILTON HOTEL HAMILTON PARK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
