Virgin Bet Raceday Preview

5.15pm - Joycean Way is due to up 2 lbs in the weights, and he looks a danger here now stepping back up in trip He has finished runner-up in his last three outings and the form of the race at Windsor in July has held up well, with many horses in that race having ran well in their next start. Prince Of Nepal was not beaten far at Beverley last time out and it looks like he just ran into a good one when well beaten at Epsom by Gordon Grey Risen Again looks the potential pace angle to the race He will need to settle better today after a disappointing performance last time out at Chester.

5.48pm - Coconut Cove was a close 2nd in a 6-furlong maiden at Yarmouth. She is likely to improve for that run and looks a main player here. Planet Seeker who looks bred for speed may warrant a market check on debut for trainer Ralph Beckett. Enha did not finish far behind her stablemate, Coconut Cove at Yarmouth and she does have her chances of reversing that form, but an improvement is needed.

6.18pm - Champagne On Ice makes her handicap debut for Ed Walker and off the back of a wind op but others are preferred ahead of her Patsy Snugfit can make the running here if needed. She did not run her race last time out however, so there are some question marks over her Bint Mohaather was an impressive winner at Wolverhampton in a maiden race but the 3rd place effort at Doncaster on her last start over 6 furlongs failed to inspire. The step up in trip may suit but preference here is for the top weight Atlantis Blue who ran well over course and distance last time out and looks in smart form. She should run a big race here, now stepping down in class.

6.48pm - Cecilia Star found listed company a bit too much for her last time out at Newbury but should be more suited to this task, now up in trip and down in class off a mark of 78. Camtank was an impressive winner of a maiden race at Lingfield. She failed to impress however in her novice stakes race last time out at Nottingham. Maybe the step up in distance will suit the Camelot filly and a chance is taken that she can bounce back to winning ways off a feasible mark of 76

7.18pm - On Edge will wear a visor for the first time and looks an interesting selection stepping backto 5 furlongs. He looks a playerhere breaking from stall 5 and has been running well off his current mark of 70 this season. Merrimack scored his 3rd career win last time out at Windsor He can run up with the pace and looks a danger here for Stuart Williams and Callum Shepherd. So Smart should appreciate the drop back in class, but improvement may be needed now off a mark of 69.

7.48pm - Kiss And Run outran her odds of 25/1 last time out, when finishing runner up in a big field handicap at Newbury She is up 2lbs to a mark of 72 today but is expected to run competitively Hunky Dory steps back in trip here today for Ed Walker He has been improving gradually and looks one for the shortlist today after a good effort last time out at Doncaster over 7 furlongs. Dapperling is a course and distance winner. She drops 2lbs but further improvement may be needed.

course characteristics

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

TODAY’S AMATEUR JOCKEYS’ HANDICAP

STAKES IS RUN IN MEMORY OF GAY KINDERSLEY

The Gay Kindersley Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap is run in memory of one of the most engaging figures to appear on the racecourse. As the son of Oonagh Guinness, Gay was fiercely proud of his Irish heritage. A natural raconteur born with an easy charm, he was educated at Eton College where he formed a life-long friendship with His Grace the late 10th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, and from this the link with amateur racing at Goodwood was made.

Gay was a former champion amateur jump jockey and one of the first jockeys to ride in FEGENTRI, the international association for amateur jockeys, forming lasting friendships wherever he went. He broke his back twice during his riding career but continued to ride against doctor’s orders and his last winning ride was in Belgium in 1969. After retiring from race riding, Gay became an established trainer in Berkshire. His life-long ambition was to win the Grand National and he came agonisingly close to achieving this when his part-owned Carrickbeg, ridden by his dear friend Lord Oaksey, was caught by Ayala in the final strides of the race in 1963.

On retiring from training in 1985, Gay relished his role as President of the Amateur Jockeys Association, of which he played a full and active part right up until his death in 2011 aged 80. He will always be remembered with great fondness by his many friends for his wonderful sense of humour, his engaging naivety and his utmost humility.

Race Summary

Gary & Josh Moore play a strong hand with both Joycean Way and PLATINUM PRINCE boasting solid credentials. Lately, the former has been consistent in defeat and could have another big say. However, Platinum Prince is already a dual course winner, including a win overC&D,andhisprovenlikingforGoodwoodisamajorfactor.Fellowtrack-and-tripwinner PrideOfNepalalsocommandsrespect.
